(Jonesboro, LA) — Louisiana Delta Community College (LDCC) is proud to announce that its Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program is expanding to the Jonesboro campus this summer. This high-demand workforce course will equip students with the essential skills and clinical experience needed to launch a healthcare career.

The CNA course will run from July 14 to August 8, 2025, with a mandatory orientation session scheduled for June 25 at 8:00 a.m. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The program’s cost is $1,998.00, which includes scrubs and shoes, eliminating the need for additional out-of-pocket expenses for required gear. Financial assistance is available through the MJ Foster Promise, helping eligible students afford their education and enter the workforce with confidence.

“Our Jonesboro location is thrilled to offer this opportunity to local students interested in healthcare,” said Jonesboro Campus Director Patience Talley. “This program not only opens the door to a stable and rewarding career, but it also helps meet a growing need for qualified CNAs across the region.”

The CNA program prepares students for work in long-term care facilities, hospitals, and home health settings. Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the Louisiana CNA certification exam and begin working in the field immediately.

Local healthcare providers are also enthusiastic about the program’s expansion. “Programs like this are critical to sustaining quality care in our region,” said Wyatt Manor Administrator Link Martin. “We depend on well-trained CNAs, and having the course right here in Jonesboro will help us fill crucial roles with local talent who are ready to serve.”

Journal Columnist Pens Book on Bienville Sheriff, Bonnie and Clyde

Brad Dison, a lifelong resident of Bienville Parish and writer whose history column “Remember This?” runs weekly in the Journal, has released a new book about Sheriff Henderson Jordan’s pursuit and capture of notorious gangsters Bonnie and Clyde.

“The Trap: The Untold Story of Sheriff Henderson Jordan and the Final Pursuit of Bonnie and Clyde” is now available for purchase at www.HendersonJordan.com.

“There has been more fiction than fact written about their crime spree,” Dison said. “For 91 years, people have assumed that former Texas Ranger Frank Hamer used his superior tracking skills to locate Bonnie and Clyde. This is another bit of fiction. It was Bienville Parish Sheriff Henderson Jordan who located two of their hideouts in Bienville Parish. It was he who set three traps to capture the gang. It was he who used an ‘undercover man’ and a ‘man on the inside’ to determine where they would be on that fateful morning of May 23, 1934. It was he who led the ambush posse and ended their violent crime spree.”

Recent patient gives praise to Jackson Parish Hospital

I want to publicly thank the Jackson Parish Hospital for the care I recently received while in their facility. I was in their hospital for a week & could not have asked for any better care than I received!

They were top notch, from the housekeeping, nurses & all the way up to my Doctor! I had the most amazing staff! The most surprising to me was the food! We all know hospital food has the same bad reputation, but let me tell you, not there!

They have Chefs who prepare the food there! Yes, I said Chefs!

I am an amazing cook myself, so I do know bad food from good food, good cooks from bad cooks! Believe me, when I tell you the meals there were absolutely DELICIOUS! I literally thought I was eating from restaurants! It was nowhere near the typical “bad” hospital food! Their food was AMAZING!

If I had to rate my stay there on a scale from 1-5, with 5 being the best, I would have to rate them a 10! Each & every one of them treated me special & like a queen! You ALL are the best!!! THANK YOU TO THE COMPLETE STAFF AT JACKSON PARISH HOSPITAL!!!!!

“The Grand Slam”

On the afternoon of June 4, 1987, 22-year-old Marquisa Kellogg was working at the Grand Slam Restaurant, a once-popular eatery in the Madisonville neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. She had served cheese coneys to two men in their early 20s whom she considered friends. She said she knew them “from the neighborhood.” Marquisa and the two customers exchanged pleasantries. There was no reason for Marquisa to suspect that this day would be any different than any other workday at the restaurant, but according to newspaper accounts from 1987, it all went wrong when the two men walked up to the cash register. The men had a brazen plan to rob Marquisa’s cash register. When they approached Marquisa, one of the men pulled a weapon. Marquisa took one look at the robber’s weapon and fled from her post at the open cash register. When she regained her composure and returned to the cash register, she found that it was short by $25 and called the police.

Police arrived at the restaurant, spoke with Marquisa, and began interviewing other customers. Police struggled to find witnesses to the crime. Upon hearing Marquisa scream, customers turned toward the cash register and saw her run away, but no one actually saw either of the men take money from the cash register. Was this part of the plan? Did the robbers intentionally steer the other customers’ attention onto the fleeing cashier and away from the cash register to enable them to quickly snatch some money? Was this their grand slam?

Marquisa later said the police failed to take the robbery seriously. You see, rather than using a weapon that most people would normally expect a robber to use, such as a gun or knife, this robber used a much smaller weapon which was only about an inch-and-a-half long. The weapon that the robber used to frighten Marquisa away from her cash register long enough to take money from it was a harmless six-legged winged insect called a Cicada.

In an interview in 2021, Marquisa said the robbery at the Grand Slam Restaurant which received national news coverage had been blown out of proportion. She said it had all been a prank gone wrong, but her register was still short $25. Police made no arrests in this case.

Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

Truth and Trust

Truth and trust to live by …

“Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.

It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones (Proverbs 3:3-8 KJV).”

A woman had heard the truth about Jesus; she trusted Him for her healing.

“And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,

And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.

For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague (Mark 5:24-29 KJV).”

Residents of the Town of Jonesboro are asked to be alert for street repair crews and equipment during the next several weeks as the Summer Street Repair Project, which lists 50 streets in Jonesboro to be repaired, is now underway.

“It is no secret that there are many streets that need work done on them, and we are very happy and excited to be able to get started on getting these taken care of,” said Jonesboro Mayor James “Spike” Harris.

Mayor Harris was also quick to offer praise to Representative Jack McFarland and the Jackson Parish Police Jury for their assistance, which without would have made this project impossible.

Actions taken by Jonesboro Board of Aldermen to save town money

The Board of Aldermen for the Town of Jonesboro held a “Special Called” meeting on Thursday, June 5th, in the conference room of City Hall that resulted in saving the town thousands of dollars per month.

This was done through the introduction of a pair of Ordinances and adoption of two Resolutions that changed the way waste is collected in the town and who is doing the collection.

Additional business handled by Robbie Siadek, James Ginn, and Nia Evans was the introduction of several budget Ordinances and the approval of a contract for a sewer main replacement. Absent was Devin Flowers and Robert Hunter.

The session started with an Ordinance being introduced concerning the amendment of the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2024, and ending June 30, 2025, for the following:
A. General Revenues and Expenditures Ordinance 2024-001A
B. Water Revenues and Expenditures Ordinance 2025-002A
C. Sewer Revenues and Expenditures Ordinance 2024-003A
D. Street Sales Tax Revenues and Expenditures Ordinance 2024-004A

This was followed by the introduction of  Ordinance 2025-004, which allows for the adoption of the budget for fiscal year July 1, 2025, – June 30, 2026.

Board members then turned their attention to making provisions for the operation of the newly created Waste Collections Department which will save the Town of Jonesboro an estimated $13,000.00 per month through the following Ordinances and Resolutions.

Introduction of Ordinance 2025-005 – Amends Jonesboro Code of Ordinances Sec. 32-104(f), regarding Garbage Rates
Introduction of Ordinance 2025-007 – Allows for repeal of Chapter 28 regarding garbage collection
Resolution Adopted –  Authorizes and approves the execution of a lease for a Rear
Loader Garbage Truck
Resolution Adopted –  Authorizes and approves the execution of a lease for Rollout Garbage Cans

“We are very pleased to be moving forward with the Town of Jonesboro collecting its own waste instead of contracting this to an outside company as has been the practice in the past,” said Mayor Harris. “With the town leasing collection equipment and collecting our own waste, we will save a little over $13,000.00 per month.”

In final action, the Board awarded a contract for a LDEQ Sewer Main Replacement and agreed to allow Mayor Harris to sign a grant agreement with the Division of Administration.
