Weston upsets Converse to advance to LHSAA quarterfinals

Experts will tell you that If you keep doing something over and over it becomes habit forming. That can be a good or a bad thing. In reference to the Weston baseball team scoring late in the game to steal a victory has been a season saver. For the third straight game and on the biggest stage yet the Wolves tallied late in the game, this time leading to an upset of #7 Converse by a 3-2 score. The victory improved the #10 seed in the Class B playoffs to 13-7 on the year and sets up a quarterfinal matchup against #2 Anacoco that will be played at 5:30pm on Saturday, May 8th at the Jackson Parish Recreation Complex.

bradenTheriot’s the hero! Of the six Weston starters that have at least 60 plate appearances this season Braden Theriot’s .213 batting average during the regular season was the worst. Since the playoffs began the freshman infielder is hitting at a blistering .400 place,. good for second on the team. He is not only getting more hits but is providing “game changers”. In the opening round against Castor, Theriot smashed a three run homer, his first of the season that helped Weston rally from a 5-1 deficit. On Monday his single in the sixth inning, which was the third straight time he reached first, gave Weston their final advantage. Talk about stepping up!

Grabbing an early lead! After Converse scored a run in the opening frame the “Comeback Kids” immediately rallied to take a 2-1 advantage. Cooper Delaney led off with a single in the top of the second followed by Theriot coaxing a walk. Bryce Zehr’s smash to short was ruled an error that loaded the bases. Tait Henderson then hit a grounder that got through the Converse first baseball that scored two.

shirleyShirley strong! Kaden Shirley does not have an overpowering fastball that blows batters away. Also he has given up more hits (60) than innings pitched (50.2). So how does the lefty have only a 2.90 earned run average. He is crafty. His seven inning, complete game performance against Converse is a perfect example of how the Weston ace wins games. Shirley scattered seven hits over the seven innings and struck out seven as well. What is his best attribute though is that the longer he throws the stronger he gets. Shirley has the mind of a pitcher well beyond his years. He is a thinking man’s pitcher, learns his opponents tendencies and uses that against them late in games. Converse did all their damage in the first three innings and left 8 runners stranded on base. Over the last four Shirley was dominant with two K’s and no hits allowed.
