Certificates of completion were issued to the 2021 Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) class on Friday, June 25th. Haley Collins, Jordan Maza, Madison Delaney, LaKeisha Brown, Sarah Bates, and Serenity Mallard all earned ½ unit of high school elective credit through the primary assistance of the Jackson Parish Hospital.
The “AHEC of a Summer” program is an exciting opportunity for ninth, tenth, and eleventh-grade students with at least a 2.0 GPA who are interested in pursuing a healthcare career. The students were given a chance to explore different career opportunities in medicine by volunteering at our local hospital, nursing home, ambulance service, pharmacy, physician offices, and dentist office for fifteen days in June, which was the 7th- 25th.
The students rotated through various hospital departments and shadowed practicing healthcare professionals. They each experienced first-hand knowledge within a variety of healthcare fields, which provided them the opportunity to learn about health issues and patient care, while also learning how to properly take a patient’s vital signs, gained their CPR certification, and attended interactive workshops, and field trips.
