Governor Edwards reissues mask mandate in Louisiana

Cover up Louisiana! Gov. John Bel Edwards held a news conference Monday to address the spread of the delta variant in Louisiana. Exactly 11,026 deaths have been reported in Louisiana since the start of the pandemic, resulting in Edwards reinstating an indoor mask mandate for all of Louisiana effective Aug. 4.

“The delta variant is a game-changer, and at this point, it’s not whether we vaccinate or mask, we have to do both,” Edwards said. “Our latest numbers confirm that we simply have to do more.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday released data that shows that while vaccination reduces one’s chance of becoming infected with COVID-19, those who do become infected with the Delta variant despite being fully vaccinated are likely at risk of transmitting it to others

According to a news release, Louisiana is currently in the worst surge of the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of case growth rate, percent positivity and hospitalizations. Over the past month, cases have increased by over 900%. Edwards announced that Louisiana continues to have the highest number of COVID-19 cases per capita in the U.S.

Dr. Joseph Kanter said 1,984 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and over 13.4 percent of all emergency room visits are related to COVID-19. He said over 40 hospitals across the state have reached out for help citing staffing shortages.

“Looking ahead to tomorrow, we will report more hospitalizations than at any other point in the pandemic,” Edwards said.

Many hospitals are postponing nonessential surgeries in order to reserve physical space and staff for COVID-19 patients. Edwards said last week that the new case count numbers are avoidable, and urged residents to get their coronavirus vaccines.

“We are ordering 10% of the vaccines available to us and yet we have the highest growth rate of cases in the country. That has to change and it has to change now,” Edwards said. “We are nowhere near where we need to be.”
