Unique “scorecard playoff” figuring bodes well for Tuesday Night Scramble winners

There is an old saying that timing is everything. The timing of using a unique formula to determine the winner of the weekly Tuesday Night Scramble golf tournament held at the Jackson Parish Golf Course certainly proved fruitful for one six man team.

As standard in golf tournaments, when two or more teams end in a tie the way their final position is determined is by having what is called a “scorecard playoff.” This is conducted by comparing the scores of the teams hole by hole and whichever team is the first to card a lower number than the others is declared the winner and so on.

This is customarily done by starting with the first hole and going from there. This past Tuesday evening it was decided that the starting hole for the scorecard playoff would be #9, the finishing hole. That proved to be bountiful for the team of Evan Thompkins, Eddie Gaines, Cedrick Garner, Chris Knighten, Gavin Knighten and Nick Morehead who birdied the final hole to shoot a 10 under total of 26, over the par 36 course.

The team of Dwayne “Snook” Harrell, Paul Trosclair, Tim Ducote, Robie, Roby and Joe V. also shot 10 under over the track but parred the final hole which relegated them to second place. Would it have made a difference if the usual scorecard playoff format would have been used? Absolutely! As it turned out it would have reversed the final standings as “Team Snook” had made an eagle 3 on the par 5, seventh hole compared to the birdie 4 carded by the winners. Coming in third place with a 9 under round of 27 was the team of Ritchie Tolar, Greg Foshee, Will Fazende, Christian Gulledge, Gary Willis and Tyler P.
