Local schools shine at Quitman Jr High tourney

The boys and girls team from both Quitman and Weston Junior High went undefeated in the Quitman Junior High Tourney played this past Thursday and Friday. It was the second straight tournament that the two junior teams from Quitman swept through the competition and marked the first time that Weston has done the same. 

Quitman continued to dominate the competition as the girls team beat Choudrant 32-9 and Claiborne Christian 27-5 while the boys dismantled Claiborne Christian 49-10. The Weston boys also had an easy time of it with a 48-8 victory over Calvin. The best game of the two day affair ended with the Weston girls outlasting Calvin 25-23 in overtime.

Games on Thursday:

Quitman 32 Calvin 9: The junior girls opened their tourney by breaking out to a 9-0 lead and never looking back. Anna Leach led the way with 7 points followed closely behind by Maggie Guyotte and Hallie Kate Pullig who had six each. Ava Caskey scored four. 

Choudrant also beat Dodson 29-4 in a boys game and Choudrant and Quitman  played a two quarter contest of sixth graders that saw Choudrant win 13-7. In the night cap, the Quitman 6th grade girls played a two quarter, intersquad scrimmage. QUITMAN WON!

Games on Friday:

Weston 25 Calvin 23 (Girls) – In a contest that was nip and tuck the whole way with neither team holding more than a one point lead at the end of a quarter before ending regulation in a tie, the junior Lady Wolves scored the only basket in the overtime period to take the win. 

Weston 48 Calvin 8 (Boys) – It was a totally different story among the junior boys teams from both schools as Weston exploded to a 12-2 lead and put the finishing touches on the romp with a 28-2 second half that included holding Calvin scoreless in the final quarter. 

Quitman 27 Claiborne Christian 5 (Girls) – Anna Leach scored twice as many as the whole C.C. team as the Lady Wolverines never allowed more than two points to be scored in a quarter. Kinley Walker added five and both Maggie Guyotte and Hallie Kate Pullig scored four. 

Quitman 49 Claiborne Christian 10 (boys) – Six players scored at least least five points led by eight each from Brayden Martin and Braden Smith as Quitman closed out the tourney by putting up the highest point total. Case West added seven and both Landon Boston and Larson Thomas chipped in with six each. Ethan Johnson added five.
