Down the stretch they come! If you likened the upcoming prep basketball games of the week ahead to a horse race that is what you would hear the track announcer say. More pertinently, the upcoming week brings to a busy end district play for the four Jackson Parish Journal coverage area schools of Jonesboro-Hodge, Quitman, Weston and Saline. With winter weather forcing cancellation of all games on Friday most will play at least three games with JHHS playing four.
Heading into the “stretch run” two of the ten area hoop teams are undefeated in district play and in great shape to secure a title. One more is hoping to make a late move to at least draw even in the district standings. For the rest of the “field” the games are more about securing a better power rating for the LHSAA playoffs, as district title aspirations are no longer possible.
Front runners in the district title race are the girl teams from Jonesboro-Hodge and Quitman. The Lady Tigers and Lady Wolverines are both undefeated and leading their respective districts, needing just one more victory to secure at least a share of the district championship. The JHHS boys are also still in the hunt. Currently the Tigers sit one game behind North Caddo with a chance to draw even via a victory in the head-to-head battle slated for Friday, Feb. 11th, in Vivian.
The schedule for Tuesday, Feb. 8th, also holds games of intrigue as historic rivals square of when Saline travels to Dodson and Quitman treks across parish to Weston in 1B and 2B play. Also it will be Senior Night at JHHS.
