At the beginning of the year the mantra for the Quitman girls team was “Let’s do it again!” THEY DID! What’s more they did it just as impressively as they have done the previous two seasons. Once again Quitman ran through district 2B competition in undefeated fashion, finishing with a perfect 6-0 record after knocking off Weston 60-52 and Choudrant 66-39 this past week.
The two wins gave Quitman their fourth district title in five years under the tutelage of head coach Kyle Leach and ran their unbeaten streak in district play to 17 straight, with the last loss being the first conference contest of the 2019-20 season.
Quitman 60 Weston 52: The Lady Wolves entered the rivalry matchup still holding onto a faint hope of tying for the title if they could beat Quitman, win their last game against Choudrant AND have Quitman lose to Simsboro. None of that happened.
Quitman quickly removed any hopes by taking a 17-11 first quarter advantage that held up over the remaining three quarters. Brayli Stewart got the Lady Wolverines off to the good start by making a pair of first quarter trey’s and scoring nine points. From there on it was the “Newcomer of the Year” in Jackson Parish that took matters into her hands to seal the deal. That is in Cali Deal, who scored 22 of her game high 24 points over the final three periods, including 12 in the second quarter that kept Weston at bay.
Deal’s effort was needed as Lainee Trosclair, one of the area’s top three-point scoring threat, got hot to score 11 points in the second. She would add two more in the third to go with her bomb in the first to give her five treys in the game and 22 points to lead Weston. Additional double figure scorers in the game were Stewart of Quitman with 12 and Louisiana Girls Ranking (LGR) player to watch in 2023, Emma Kate McBride for Weston, who finished with 14.

Quitman 66 Choudrant 39: Quitman exploded for 23 second quarter points to take a 36-19 lead into the break en route to their fifth straight victory over Choudrant over the last three years. The inside-outside attack of Cali Deal and Bethany Leach was too much for the Lady Aggies to handle as their 20 and 18 respective points was just one short than Choudrant scored as a team.
Brayli Stewart added five and both Ansley Folks and A.J. Gray pitched in with four. Emma Walker, Summer Grillette and Lily Kate Odom got two each to round out the Lady Wolverines scoring. Choudrant dropped to 17-12 overall while Quitman ran their record to 24-8, the second consecutive year that the Lady Wolverines have won that many games.
The celebration of the title was completed when after the game the team gave head coach Kyle Leach the traditional “Victory Shower” by dumping the water cooler over his head. To see the festivities and fun click here: https://www.facebook.com/100000610115787/videos/508094490914978/
