Thursday, Feb. 17 – After the season opening 16-4 victory against Lakeside this past Thursday, the Lady Wolverine softball team posed for a team picture (see above). The goal and what could be said, expectation of the team is that when the season comes to an end, they will pose for another with a state championship trophy in front of them.
An ambitious schedule that includes competing in five highly competitive tournaments and nine games against schools from higher classifications got off to a good start with the five inning, mercy rule victory over the 2021 district 1-2A champion and Class AA regional qualifier.
It took a little while for the vaunted Quitman attack to get unlimbered but the third time through the order proved to be the charm. That in the top of the fourth inning when the Lady Wolverines batted around twice and scored 13 runs to blow open what had been a 3-2 Quitman lead.
The big inning started when Marly Bell doubled and Cassidy Davis got hit by a pitch. Madeline Vail then stroked the second two bagger of the inning for two RBI followed by a triple to left center by Madison Chaplin who then scored on a wild pitch. Maggie Guyotte drew a walk setting up the first homer of the season by Mattie Kaye “Big Bopper” Brymer.
Two walks and two more hit batters led to two more RBI by Vail from her third double of the day and fourth consecutive hit. Four more free passes by the stunned Lakeside pitching staff and singles by Brymer and Skylar Hall closed out the scoring.
Lakeside scored two in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Guyotte struck out two and got a ground ball to end the rally and earn her first victory of the year after going all five innings and striking out eight. Vail led the offensive assault by going 4/4 with 3 doubles, 4 runs scored, 4 RBI and a stolen base. Chaplin and Brymer also came up big with two hits each with Chaplin throwing in a triple, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases and Brymer hitting a round tripper, scoring two, knocking in three more and stealing a base. Bell scored twice as did Hall who also stole two bases. Averie Williams also knocked in a pair of runs.

Three run first inning lifts Wolverines

Ponder would get his second hit of the game to drive in Cam Hollis in the fourth before Riley Duck “went yard” in the fifth for the final run. Ian Tilley gave up two hits and one earned run while striking out five in five innings to get the win.

Guyotte’s “Granny” highlights rout of Saline
Maggie Guyotte hit an inside the park grand slam in the bottom of the second to put the finishing touches on a 17-1 rout of Saline that lasted only 2 1/2 innings before being called per the “mercy rule”. It was a complete team offensive effort by the Lady Wolverines as every player on the Quitman roster got on base and every starter got at least one hit.
Quitman got the offense started on the second pitch thrown by Saline’s Jayden Williams when Madison Vail reached on an infield single. A beautifully placed bunt by Madison Chaplin put runners on first and third and both scored on a double by Maddie Kate Brymer.
The Lady Wolverines added six more runs with two outs when Karley Huckaby reached on another infield single and came home along with Brymer on an Averie Williams single to centerfield. Marley Bell followed with another hit as did Anna Leach with Williams scoring to up the lead to 5-0. Vail then circled the bases with an “inside the parker” to left giving Quitman an 8-0 lead after one inning of play.
After Guyotte set Saline down in order the Lady Wolverines went right back to work. Guyotte, Brymer and Skylar Hall singled and Huckaby walked to force in a run setting up Williams second two run single in two innings. Brymer then scored on a passed ball to up the lead to 12-0. Leach followed with single and Vail walked to load the bases. Guyotte then hit the smash to right that cleared the bases and put Quitman up 16-0. Addison Fenn drew a walk to score Brymer for the final run.
