Quitman’s Simonelli shuts out Choudrant in 2B opener

Ty Simonelli scattered four meaningless singles and both Luke Morgan and Blake Carter got a pair of hits and scored a run to help lift Quitman High to an impressive 3-0 victory over Choudrant in the district 2B opener for both teams.

The victory vaulted the Wolverines to the top of the district standings and led to a major jump, all the way up to #2 in the Class B rankings. Choudrant, who previously was at #2, fell to15-7 overall and now sits in Quitman’s former spot of sixth.

Just how does a team that enters into a contest on a seven-game losing streak and a 7-10 overall record beat a defending state champion and #2 ranked squad playing on their home field? It was all part of the plan.

When QHS head coach, Joe Lockhart, set down before the season to formulate his teams schedule his main goal was to get his squad to grow up quickly. How do you accomplish such a goal? What Lockhart thought was best way to accomplish that goal was to play as many good and higher classified teams as possible before district play began. The result was that 16 of Quitman’s first 17 opponents hailed from higher classes. Included were the last seven contests, all loses against teams that all had a winning record.

“I told the guys at the beginning of the season that I had loaded their wagon,” laughed Lockhart. “I also told them that if they would trust in what we were trying to do, that we would be prepared for district when the time came.”

Lockhart felt that district 2B would be one of the stronger in the state but even though he had high expectations, no one could imagine just how strong the district has turned out to be. Per the rankings as of Tuesday, Weston is at #1, Quitman #2, Choudrant #6 and Simsboro at #11. No other district regardless of classification can make such a claim.

There is nothing better than when a plan comes together as the gauntlet of pre-district games obviously paid huge dividends. The Wolverines put together their most complete total game of the year with every phase working to maximum efficiency.

As far as individual’s deserving accolades it starts with Simonelli. In what is easily his best pitching performance of his high school career the right hander struck out 9 and held the powerful Choudrant offense in check the whole game.  Eleven times this season the Aggies have scored more than ten runs but Simonelli held them to four harmless singles and didn’t allow a runner past second base until the seventh inning. He also helped his own cause by getting on base three times and scoring the final run following back to back singles by Logan Ponder and Riley Duck.

Light hitting, John Reagan Hasley, who entered the contest with no hits in ten at bats also came up big when his first hit of the year, a clutch two out single, plated Carter who had led the second inning off with a hit. The score moved to 2-0 the next inning when Luke Morgan got his second hit in as many at bats, stole second and scampered home on a Duck grounder to short. Cam Deal also slapped a double.
