A Sudden Flash of Inspiration

In the summer of 1893, Katharine Lee Bates was teaching English at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Katharine and some of the other teachers decided to visit the summit of Pikes Peak, some 12 miles away as the crow flies. Katharine had learned all she could about the peak’s history before setting off.

Pikes Peak became part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Soon thereafter, the federal government sent military explorers out to see what the newly acquired property contained. One of those military explorers was Zebulon Pike, the peak’s namesake. His task was to locate the headwaters of the Red and Arkansas rivers. On November 15, 1806, Pike spotted what he called “the Grand Peak” for the first time. Eleven days later, Pike and several of his men attempted to reach its summit. Bad weather and the lack of proper climbing gear ultimately forced them to retreat. Pike never made it to the peak which bears his name. It was another fourteen years, in the summer of 1820, before the first European-American reached the summit.

Climbing the 14,115 feet summit in the 1890s was not an easy feat. Katharine and the other teachers hired a prairie wagon to take them part of the way up the mountain. When the road became too treacherous for the wagon to go on, they mounted donkeys and continued. By the time they reached the top, several hours later, they were all exhausted. Their energy was renewed when they saw the breathtaking views. As Katharine took it all in, she had a sudden flash of inspiration. She pulled out her notebook and began writing. She diverted her gaze from the view just long enough to scribble down a few words at a time.

Throughout her lifetime, Katharine published numerous books, most of which were popular at the time but have largely been forgotten with the passage of time. Her most memorable work was that poem she quickly wrote while taking in the wonderful views from Pikes Peak. Organist Samuel A. Ward happened upon Katharine’s poem and composed music to go along with it. The song was first published in 1910. Since then, hundreds of artists have recorded the song including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Aretha Franklin. Katharine’s sudden flash of inspiration produced one of the most beloved patriotic songs in American history, “America the Beautiful.”

Her original 1893 poem is still recognizable today, though there are noticeable differences from her later, more popular version.

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife,
When once or twice, for man’s avail,
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain,
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

Local businesses support Tiger Football Lift-A-Thon

Over the past couple of weeks it was not unusual to see bands of JHHS Tiger football players canvasing downtown and the surrounding areas of Jonesboro. The 2022 term members were out in droves in an effort to raise donations for their annual Lift-A-Thon which is designed to help defray expected costs of the upcoming football season.

As a show of support many business owners and managers like Phillip Walker of the Edmonds Monument Company (shown above on right), contributed to the effort.  Head football coach and athletic director Terrance Blankenship was appreciative of the response given.

“On behalf of the players and coaching staff, I want to thank everyone who showed their support of our team through their donations to our program,” said Blankenship. “The guys have been working hard to represent our school and town in the best way and it is a great feeling to know that our community is behind our team.”

The annual Lift-A-Thon was held on Tuesday, August 1st, where the players raised money by improving on their previous established maximum of weight lifted in the bench press and squat. The money was raised through a designated dollar amount being pledged for every pound lifted over and above the previous best by a player. Every player on the team participated including freshmen.

Top performers were Cartavious “Hambone” Waters who squatted 685 pounds and Josh Tatum with a bench press of 385 pounds.

The Lift-A-Thon is part of “Weight Week” which is the traditional end to summer work outs.

Progress being made on Industrial Drive water line

It will still be a while before water transmission reaches full capacity in and around the Industrial Complex located on the south side of Jonesboro but a major step was acheived this past week when thewater line running along Industrial Drive was connected and buried. The effort, being conducted through the Jonesboro Public Works Department, is part of the ongoing work made possible through grants orchestrated by Town of Jonesboro Engineer Brad Graff and the Jonesboro Board of Aldermen.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library reaches milestone locally

July 29th was a Red Letter Day for the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL).
The cause for the celebration was that a milestone had been reached as the number of children in Jackson, Bienville, Winn, and Lincoln parishes that have been poistively impacted by the benevolent program  went over ONE THOUSAND.
Kudos to the parents and guardians who are encouraging the development of children under 5 by registering them to receive a FREE age-appropriate book each month. JSb / Pledge 10 and Pine Belt Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency are proud to offer this opportunity to our precious young people.
A huge thank you goes to those who encourage friends and family to register, the public libraries and educators who share registration information, news sources that helped spread the word, and so many more!
Much appreciation goes to the Jonesboro State Bank management who gave an immediate YES to the idea to bring DPIL to the area after a brainstorming session that included Conchita Malone-Doyle on ways to share our commitment to education and youth development with the littlest ones in our community.

Ponderings…….

Ken Davis has a book with the intriguing title I Don’t Remember Dropping the Skunk, But I Do Remember Trying to Breathe. In it he talks about an assignment he was given in college to teach a class as creatively as possible.

He decided to teach the law of the pendulum, a law of physics that states that a pendulum can never return to a point higher than the point from which it is released. If you put a ball on the end of a string and release it so that it is free to swing, when it returns it can’t go any higher than the point from which you released it. In fact, because of friction and gravity, it will fall short of the release point. Each time it swings, the arc gets smaller and smaller until it finally comes to rest.

Ken used all kinds of diagrams, mathematical formulas, and models to teach the law of the pendulum to the class, and he could tell by the look on the teacher’s face that the teacher thought he had done well.
When Ken finished, he asked the class how many believed in the law of the pendulum. All hands flew up, including the teachers.

The teacher thought the lesson was over at this point, but it had just started. Ken asked his teacher to come to the front of the room and sit in a chair placed against the wall. Suspended from the ceiling Ken had rigged 250 pounds of weight-lifting disks. This was a big pendulum.

Ken brought the 250 pounds of metal right up to the teacher’s nose and said, “If the law of the pendulum is true, then when I release this mass of metal, it will swing across the room and return short of where I am holding it now. Your nose will still look like it does right now.” Ken looked his teacher right in the eye and said, “Sir, do you believe this law is true?”

There was a long pause as great drops of sweat formed on his teacher’s upper lip. Then weakly, his teacher nodded and whispered, “Yes.”

Ken released the pendulum. At the far end of its arc it paused momentarily and then started back. Ken says he has never seen a man move so fast in his life!

Carefully, Ken stepped around the still-swinging pendulum and asked the class, “Does he believe in the law of the pendulum?”

In unison they answered, “No!”

Ken’s professor understood the law, but he was unwilling to trust his nose to it. After a short discussion, a student volunteered to sit in the chair. Even though his face contorted in fear as the pendulum started back, he stayed put. But it stopped an inch from his nose and swung away from him again. Now his faith in the law was strengthened. The next time the pendulum swung, he didn’t even blink.

Life is like that pendulum at times. We see it coming at us and wonder how much pain it will cause.

Jesus is an antidote to fear.

Following Jesus is better than blink, flinch, or run. Try Him!
