
Will Dison scored 12 of his team-high 24 points and Shawn Staggs added 8 of his 16 in the fourth quarter to help rally visiting Saline past Weston 71-68 in a stirring boys basketball contest on Monday. In action prior, the games weren’t nearly as close as the Lady Wolves beat Saline 66-26 and the Saline Junior Varsity took a 61 -17 victory.
On Tuesday, Jonesboro-Hodge traveled to Lakeview for their District 3-2A opener and Quitman visited Ouachita Christian for a boys and girls contest but no reports of scores were submitted before press time. Games results along with Friday action will be recapped in the Sunday, January 15th edition of the Jackson Parish Journal.
Saline 71 Weston 68 (boys): With Mitchel Mathews dominating the paint for 23 of his game-high 27 points, Weston held a 51-46 advantage entering the fourth quarter but Saline outscored the Wolves 25-17 in the final frame to post a season-high in points and steal the victory. Both teams were clutch from the free throw line down the stretch with Saline canning 8 of 10 from the charity stripe and Weston making 7 of 10, including four straight from Braden Theriot that tied the score at 68 apiece.
Saline jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the contest only to see Weston score ten straight to take a 16-12 lead after the first period. With K.L. Crawford, who finished with 16, nailing his third and fourth three-pointer of the first half the Bobcats narrowed the margin to 33-32 at the half. Weston stayed on top thanks to threes from Ja’ Michael Fourd and Nathan Wages along with five of Bryce Zehr’s 16 points in the contest. Tait Henderson and Jude Otwell canned treys in the third to assist Mathews and the Weston defense held Saline to only four field goals to give Weston a five-point advantage leading to the raucous fourth quarter that had fans from both sides on their feet.

Weston 66 Saline 26 (Girls) The old saying is that when your hot your hot but what transpired on Monday night was on another level as Weston was on fire early on. Coming on the heels of misfiring to a season-low in points three days before the Lady Wolves scorched the nets for a season-high 12 three-pointers to post their most lopsided victory of the year.
Five players accounted for six three-pointers, including a pair from Anslee Aldy, in the first quarter alone and Weston’s full-court pressure defense led to numerous turnovers as Weston raced to a commanding 28-3 lead. Emma Kate McBride and Faith Beamesderfer kept the long-range attack going with a pair of trey’s each in the second and the Lady Wolves defense limited Saline to just three points once again as Weston entered the break with a season-best lead of 51-6.
A season-high eleven Lady Wolves scored in the contest led by Briley Peterson with 15 and 13 from McBride. Beamesderfer was next with 8 followed by 7 each from Lainee Trosclair and Lexie Millien. Aldy had six, Jakayla Fourd three, Jessica Newton, Morgan Russell, and Livi Otwell scored two and Tailen Bearden added a free throw. Saline, who was missing leading scorer Alana Gray, was led by twin sister Alaya with 10. Vivien Grete and Rayaunnah Pearson added five each, Kasidy Sims scored four and both Cenada Weathers and X Lard hit a free throw for the Lady Bobcats who fell to 4-13. Weston improved to 19-5 with the win.

Saline 61 Weston 17 (JV Boys) Nine players tallied and Saline scored 16 points in the first quarter which is only one point less than Weston had all game. Three players reached double figures for the Bobcats led by 12 from Nathan Peoples and 10 each by Trent Ledbetter and Gavin Dailey. Eli Ferguson, Jer’Courtney Loyd, and Conner Roberts added six each, Jacob Jones finished with five, Treyvon Colvin scored four, and Jay Nash made two. Weston was led by Daniel Williams and Nathan Wages with six each followed by Dawson Griffin and Jay Nash with three and two points respectively.
