Zach Cheatwood and Mathew Pearce knew they were taking on the daunting task when they agreed to coach the JHHS baseball and softball teams this spring. They knew that neither program has won more than two games in a season over the past two years and that improvement was going to happen overnight.
While neither team has won a game or for that matter even had one last a full seven innings yet, it is obvious that both are making a difference and strides, albeit small ones, are being made each game.
Calvin 13 JHHS 3 (Baseball): JHHS got two runs ahead for the first time all season lead and scored more runs than the game before for the third straight time. The Tigers went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first without a hit when Trey Trosclair opened with a walk, Ajay Tew reached on an error and Waylen Evans walked to load the bases. Another walk to Alfonzo Calahan scored Tew and then Evans scored on a wild pitch. JHHS scored their third run when Calahan walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Ethan Johnson. An eight spot posted by Calvin in the third inning and three more in the top of the fifth gave the Cougars the victory in their first game of the year. JHHS fell to 0-3 on the season.
Doyline deals doubleheader defeat to JHHS
The Lady Tigers took a lead for the first time all season but in the end Doyline was simply too strong as they defeated the Lady Tigers in both games of the doubleheader played on Monday by 17-2 and 19-2 scores. JHHS now stands at 0-4 on the year while Doyline improved to 3-4.
Kylia Hayes and Pam Cribbs opened the contest by drawing walks and Zoie Anderson followed with a single to give the Lady Tigers their first lead of the year at 2-0. Doyline scored three in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead, scored three more in the second and then put the game away with eleven runs in the bottom of the third. Doyline scored eleven runs again in their next at bat which was in the bottom of the first inning of the second game in the 19-2 victory. Hayes and Anderson scored the Lady Tigers two runs.
