
Future Farmers of America (FFA) teams from both Quitman and Weston High Schools placed 1st at the area 1 Career and Development Events (CDE) hosted by Louisiana Tech University on Friday, March 10.
The four man team from Weston under the guidance of Advisor Derek Shields won the Area 1 Floriculture Division by scoring 1831 out of a possible 2000 points. The CDE consisted of identifying plants, identifying common equipment used in the industry, and a written exam.
Cory Tucker won first in individual competition with a scored of 486 / 500 with Cejay Colvin, Collin Shows, and Abel McBride completing a top four finish sweep by placing 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. This marks the second year in a row that these “Fab Four” have won the Area 1 championship.
The Quitman FFA Nursery and Landscaping team of Caden Brown, Emma Harper, Madison Taylor, and Eliza Guin placed 1st as well by scoring 2395 out of a possible 2600 points. Emma Harper was the high scoring individual with a score of 635 out of a possible 650 points. Advisor Marty Cantrell’s team members ranked 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th in the competition.
The teams form both schools will now advance to state competition that will be held in Baton Rouge on April 4th.
