Quitman High School and Ouachita Christian have dueled for supremacy on the links all spring long. On May 1st and 2nd, the two top small school golf programs in northeast Louisiana went at it again, but this time it was Bayou Bend Country Club in Crowley, LA, site of the Division IV state championship tournament where OCS finished in second and the Wolverines came in third. Episcopal-Acadiana, which shot 304-306 over the two days claimed the state title.
Heading into the second day, Quitman High, one of only two “non-select” schools to make the state tourney, trailed OCS by three tiny strokes for second place with Eli Walker sitting in second place overall for individual medalist after being one of only three players who shot even par or better.
With Noah Leach and Cam Deal improving 9 strokes each, Pete Simonelli shaving two strokes off and Ian Tilley one, the Wolverines put on a fierce charge. By the end of the day, the Wolverines had improved by a whopping 15 strokes from their first-day score but OCS matched the 308 team score to stay just ahead.
Like the team, Eli Walker also came in third place in medalist play. What’s more the local linkster ended with the distinction of having the lowest score of any competitor from north Louisiana, much like he has done all spring.
Tayt Culpepper of Weston shot two rounds in the 70s and improved three strokes on the final day to finish in 14th with Quitman’s Simonelli turning in his best two-day aggregate of the year to come in 16th place out of the 50 competitors. Leach was just behind at #20 while Deal finished 28th and Tilley 32nd overall.
