Quitman High School Agricultural Science Program off to strong start

Quitman High School students enrolled in the agricultural science program have gotten off to a strong start to the 2023-24 school year. From Certifications to carpentry projects, students at every level have been busy developing knowledge and skills for their futures.

Students in Ag I recently completed the LA Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries sponsored Hunter Education Course. Students learned about wildlife management and conservations, safe firearms handling, and shooting skills. After completion of the classroom hours, the students attended a certification shoot at the Top Shot Shooting Range in Hodge. Thirty-five (35) students completed the course and have now earned their Hunters Education certification.

Ag II students earned certification in the Boaters Safety Education Course. Anyone born after 1984 must complete the boaters education course in order to operate a vessel on public waters. Forty-one (41) students completed this certification course. Upon the conclusion of that course, students have been working to hone their skills in the wood shop. They have been building adirondack style chairs and tables to be enjoyed during those cool fall evenings around the firepit.

Ag III students have been working towards completing OSHA 10 certifications to assist in preparing them for the workforce after high school. Twenty-three (23) students have completed this course. These students are working towards advanced woodworking credentials and are currently constructing benches that convert to a picnic table. They are demonstrating safe work habits while increasing their skill sets.

We are looking forward to continued growth and learning this fall as we are set to participate in FFA competitions, attend a number of industry tours, and continued classroom learning.
