J-HES Wraparound: February Saturday School helps prepare for LEAP testing

On February 3, 2024, the faculty and staff of Jonesboro-Hodge Elementary held a LEAP-focused Saturday School for students in Grades 3-5. The rotations included practice tests in the areas of ELA, Math, and Science, counseling sessions on “Test Anxiety,” and Physical Education. An attendance of 23 allowed for a small-group setting that ended with a tasty lunch courtesy of Pizza Hut. Parents/Guardians, please be on the lookout for future sessions.

“While I believe a score does not define our students, we will continue to offer additional LEAP Prep opportunities in efforts to increase student achievement on the LEAP assessment. To clarify, Mastery is a score of 750 across all contents and is defined by the LDOE as meeting the grade level expectations and prepared for the next grade level. A school receives 150 points for every Advanced, 100 for every Mastery, 80 for every Basic, and 0 for every Approaching Basic and Unsatisfactory scoring” -Ms. Copeland, Principal,

I am from Sibiu, Romania. In my home country, people were beaten every day for no reason. Soldiers came and killed many of my people. One day, I heard about a country called “The Land of Gold”. A few weeks later, it was like wildfire spreading. Someone had immigrated to America and came back to free more people. I heard that somewhere 10 million dollars was hidden in America . One month later, I was packing my bags and heading to “The Golden Land”. My journey was horrible. People that were in third class had no fresh food. They fed us scraps, and we were lucky to get one banana. The worst part was people were always getting sick and many died. Also, we had no toilet, we had 5 gallon buckets. One day, I heard a lot of commotion
upstairs on deck. I got up there and saw the Statue of Liberty. I felt relieved to finally be in “The Golden Land”. –Malayah, JHES 5th Grader

I am from a small town in Romania called Lași. My home life was dreadful, and my father had left for the army when I was younger. My mother, Ancaa, married another man while my father was in the army. Later my father died in World War 1. I was irate! I told my mother that I was leaving because she told me that my father died and had done nothing in this family for us. In 1915 I decided I was leaving officially. I heard that the Statue of Liberty represents freedom, and we were under war. A month later I was boarding a boat sailing towards America. Only me was on the boat, just me and a few other people, not even my family. As I was on the boat I saw people using the bathroom in the corner, people were sick and throwing up. I was sitting in a corner of the boat when I heard noise, people screaming, I went up on deck and I saw the Statue of Liberty. I was set free. -Kaden, JHES 5th Grader
