Red Alert!: White Rat, blue streaks

Baseball fans in north Louisiana whose dads and granddads were raised on the radio sounds of KMOX and St. Louis Cardinals baseball remember Whitey Herzog, who led the Cardinals to a World Series title (1982) and two other World Series appearances (1985 and 1987) in his 10 years as the team’s colorful manager.

The prematurely white-haired Herzog passed away last week at 92, one of the last “characters” of the old-school game.

A tip of the ballcap to Whitey, the architect of one of the great nights of my otherwise feeble life.

It was a July Tuesday in Busch Stadium in 1986, and the San Francisco Giants were in town and so was I, writing stories on some former Shreveport Captains who were now Giants. The Cards were defending world champions but were struggling through a .500 summer, a team built offensively on speed while the Giants were an offense built on power.

St. Louis would sweep the series but it’s that Tuesday game that was the one to remember. The Cards led 10-2 in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, they stole a base.

It’s sort of an unwritten rule that you don’t steal with a big lead. Roger Craig, the Giants manager, knew this and seemed to take it personally when San Francisco reliever Juan Berenguer (blast from the past, right?) came into the game and threw at the first hitter he saw; it was the only batter he faced.

This brought Herzog out of the Cardinals dugout to protest to the home plate umpire and, a scenario you don’t see often, Craig came out of the Giants dugout and joined the conversation. The last time you’ve seen both managers yelling at the home plate umpire at the same time is … when? Only time I’ve ever seen it.

Neither manager, as it turned out, was yelling at the umpire. They were yelling at each other. Fairly quickly they were nose to nose. Fingers jabbing. Spit flying. Then the dugouts emptied, and it were as if Herzog and Craig were each a point on opposing spears, with each team forming an arrow behind their guy.

Heated down there on the Busch Stadium turf, sure, but beautiful from where I sat in the press box, listening to 23,000-plus yelling in favor of Whitey “The White Rat” Herzog.

You knew what the argument was about, and after the game, Herzog explained it to me and other writers, his sock feet on his desk in his office underneath the stadium, leaned back in his swivel chair, a can of beer in his left hand. (A former player, Herzog batted, threw, and drank lefty.)

“Does Roger think he invented the game?” Herzog was saying. “I told him if he promised not to hit any three-run homers, I’d promise we wouldn’t try to steal any more bases. We can’t score the same way he can.”

Some other names from that weekend: Chris Brown, Robby Thompson, Jeffrey Leonard, Chili Davis, Mike LaValliere, Willie McGee, Vince Coleman, Tom Herr, Terry Pendleton. Steve Carlton actually hit a three-run homer in the Monday night opener, the only runs his team scored in an 8-3 loss. Only time I ever saw him pitch live — or hit a home run live. Hit it good too; slapped it off one of those columns in right in old Busch.

Good times.

But the most beautiful part of the whole thing was after the game and Herzog explaining, with a big smile, his side of the argument. His beltless baseball pants unbuttoned to allow that 56-inches-or-so of waist a little freedom. And him holding that can of beer. Of course, in Busch Stadium it was a Busch beer. A freebie.

The funny part was it was a Busch Light.

Hayden Davis / Maddox Duck finish 2nd in NELAHS final point standings

Hayden Davis and Maddox Duck caught four fish for a total of 9.45 lbs, including a 4.20 lunker, which was the second largest bass caught on the day, to finish in fourth place of the NELAHS Tournament on Lake Bruin of the day this past Saturday. The tournament was the final of the season on the Northeast Louisiana High School Anglers Tour that ran from September 16, 2023 – April 20, 2024. 

By virtue of the their finish the pair representing Quitman High School ended up in second place in the final NELAHS Anglers Tour point standings, just 4 1/2 points behind first place Zachary McMillan and Ethan Thrash. 

Landin Chatham of Weston High and his partner Hunter VanBuren ended the season in 5th place overall after coming in 12th place at Lake Buren with a 3 fish stringer that weighed 7.10 lbs. 

Brody Halbrook and Brendan Newton of Gracepoint Christian Academy in Jonesboro finished in 17th overall in the senior division and third in the NELAHS Jr. Anglers championship series. Jake Vail and Waylon Sullivan of Quitman came in 5th place and Andrew Brown and Cason Rogers came in 10th in the junior series as well. 

Hailey Chatham of Weston took the honors as highest ranked female on the NELAHS tour as she and her partner Ben Ramsey ended the year in 18th place after placing 19th at Lake Bruin. 


Ponderings……

I learned touch typing in the ninth grade. I still type reasonably fast.

I received a learner’s permit in the tenth grade and I still drive a car reasonably fast.
I don’t think about either while I am doing them. If you have been behind me in a car, perhaps you have speculated about that.

Typing is habitual. I do it every day. Right now I am working on two sermons and two of these articles. I hope I don’t get things crossed up.

Driving is habitual. I do that every day as well. I have noticed that my driving skills are not as sharp as they once were. Part of that I blame on age. I don’t see as well at night as I once did. My reflexes while still cat like, are like a slow fat Tom cat who has been eating inside food for years.

I type alone. No one stands over my shoulder and watches me type. I do face a weekly deadline for my articles to be published. I can take as long as I wish to type an article provided that they arrive before the aforementioned deadline. When I make a mistake typing, I hit the backspace or delete button and the mistake is erased. Actually the page I am typing on now, doesn’t really exist. It is the reproduction of a page and letters appearing on a computer monitor. Is it real? Is it something else?

When I drive, I’m sharing the road with other folks. For the most part, folks know how to handle a vehicle. Some drive too slowly for me, but I’m learning to take my time and relax. It is part of giving up “running.” I have reached the stage where walking is moving fast enough through life. The other thing about drivers is distracted drivers.

Yesterday on I-20 I was passed by a young person doing at least 90 mph. She was texting away as she blew past me. I prayed for her safety and the safety of her passengers. I have noted that guys on the phone tend to drive slower than the posted speed limit. I guess that proves that we are not able multi-taskers. I will note that mistakes while driving are costly and dangerous.

I’m a faster typist than in my High School days. It is a skill that doesn’t seem to diminish with age. I did the math yesterday and discovered that over my career I have typed over five million words. My fingers want some time off. I have enjoyed most of what I have typed. There are a couple of letters that stand out as exceptions. I hit send and I should have hit delete.

Over the same period, I have driven 935,000 miles. I don’t text and drive so I can’t count words typed while driving. I drive just as fast as I always have. My right foot contains ample amounts of Pb. Notice I didn’t count the number of speeding greetings I have received from various law enforcement agencies.

I enjoy writing and driving. Writing is great mental exercise. When I drive, I get windshield time. I have time alone to ponder and consider. I have time to pray and listen to God. Although I’m not as good a driver as I once was, I still enjoy it. I’m looking forward to one of those self-driving cars so I can look at flora and fauna while I “drive.” I can also finally type in a moving car!

We are Easter people. We live on this side of the empty tomb.

Writing and driving are just two things I enjoy doing. Easter promises that the enjoyment of life continues eternally. Someone said that heaven is like an everlasting worship service. NOT! Heaven is living. It is living without fear, sickness, pain, disappointment, guilt and sin. Resurrection life is really living! Easter is our promise that in Christ we will have that kind of life.

Medaries / Mcmurray represent QHS at LHSAA state tennis tournament

Walker Medaries and Gage Mcmurray represented Quitman High School in doubles competition at the LHSAA state tennis tournament that was held on Monday April 22nd at University of Louisiana – Monroe.

The pair qualified for state by beating third ranked Oak Grove in the first matchup of regional competition and then upset #1 ranked Cedar Creek to secure their spot at the state tournament.

In state competition, Medaries and Mcmurray fell 6-2, 6-3 to the duo of Dupre / Lalonde from Westminster Christian in the first round of the Division IV tournament. 


“Innocent Until Proven Guilty”

For more than 60 years, people have accused Eddy of at least five murders, but the evidence against him is only circumstantial. When confronted with evidence which proves Eddy’s innocence, people who believe in Eddy’s guilt cry conspiracy, of which there is no evidence. Let us take a brief look at Eddy’s supposed crime spree.

The first murder happened at about 3:40 on the morning of August 31. A man named Charles Allen Cross was walking to work when he discovered what he initially thought was a tarpaulin on the ground at the entrance to a horse stable. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was the body of a woman later identified as 43-year-old Mary Ann “Polly” Nichols. Polly was lying on her back with her eyes open. Her legs were straight, and her skirt was raised above her knees. Another man on his way to work, Robert Paul, approached and spoke briefly about the deceased woman. They pulled her skirt down to preserve her dignity, then ran to fetch policeman Jonas Mizen who was only a short distance away. When the policeman arrived, Polly’s legs were still warm. Surgeon Dr. Llewellyn determined that Polly had been dead for approximately 30 minutes. Eddy was over 200 miles away at the time of the murder.

At about 5:15 on the morning of September 8, Albert Cadosch, a resident of 27 Hanbury Street went into his yard to urinate. He heard a woman say “No, no!” Then he heard something hit the fence dividing his property with 29 Hanbury street. He thought little of it at the time and went back inside. The mutilated body of 47-year-old Annie Chapman was discovered less than 45 minutes later by John Davis, an elderly resident of 29 Hanbury Street. Again, Eddy was over 200 miles away at the time of the murder.

At about 12:35 on the morning of September 30, policeman William Smith saw Elizabeth “Liz” Stride with a man at number 40 Berner Street. The man was carrying a package that officer Smith later said was about 18 inches long. With no reason to suspect anything, officer Smith continued on his patrol. Approximately 25 minutes later, Louis Diemschutz drove his horse and two-wheeled cart into the poorly lit Dutfield’s Yard. His horse abruptly shied to the left to avoid a dark object lying on the ground. Louis struck a match and saw a dead body lying on the ground. She was still bleeding from a single knife wound on her neck. Louis ran for help. When police arrived, parts of Liz’s body were still warm. They suspected that the killer had been interrupted by Louis.

At precisely 1:44 on the same morning, just 44 minutes after Liz’s body was discovered, policeman Edward Watkins discovered the mutilated body of Catherine Eddowes lying on her back in the southwest corner of Miter square. Officer Watkins had passed through Miter Square 14 minutes earlier, but the body was not there at that time. (According to google maps, the average person can walk the distance between the location of Liz’s and Catherine’s murders in just 17 minutes.) At the time Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were killed, Eddy was over 500 miles away.

Sometime between 3:30 and 4 o’clock on the morning of November 9, Elizabeth Prater, who lived directly above Mary Jane Kelly’s apartment, along with a guest, Sarah Lewis, heard a scream. This being the roughest part of the city at the time, screams during the night were nothing new. They thought little about it at the time. At about 5:30 that morning, Elizabeth walked past Mary’s door but saw nothing out of the ordinary. At about 10:45 that morning, Thomas Bowyer went to Mary’s room to collect the rent which was six weeks overdue. He knocked on the door but got no response. He went to the window, but the curtains were drawn. He removed a piece of cloth which had been used to plug a broken windowpane and pulled back the curtain. Thomas was shocked to see the extensively mutilated body of Mary Jane Kelly.

Investigators believed Mary had died sometime between 1:45 and 8:00 a.m. that morning. They determined that her body was so badly mutilated because the killer struck in a private room which enabled the murderer to take his time. The murder of Mary Jane Kelly is considered by most to be the last of the murders some claim Eddy committed. Eddy was over 100 miles from the scene of the murder.

Eddy was never questioned by police, nor was he a suspect during his lifetime. Three years after the last murder, Eddy was engaged to be married. By all substantiated accounts, Eddy was in perfect health until a couple of weeks before his wedding date. Eddy became ill with influenza which turned into pneumonia. He never recovered and died at the young age of 28. Could Eddy have been the murderer?

For any investigation, police try to determine whether a suspect has an alibi and must judge the strength of the alibi. Eddy had many alibis. In fact, his movements were being tracked by newspapers all over the country, not because he had done anything wrong, but because of who he was. Based on newspaper accounts alone, Eddy could not have been the murderer. Even the Queen of England could have vouched for Eddy. In her journal, she recorded that on September 30, 1888, the date that the killer murdered two women in less than an hour, she had lunch with Eddy over 500 miles away. You see, Eddy was the family’s nickname for Prince Albert Victor. He was the grandson of Queen Victoria and second in line to the English throne. Despite the numerous books and films on the subject, Eddy, Prince Albert Victor could not have been the murderer known as Jack the Ripper.

Ten Identifiable Signs of Child Abuse
• Unexplained Injuries. Visible signs of physical abuse may include unexplained burns and bruises in the shape of objects.
• Changes in Behaviors. Abuse can lead to many changes in a child’s behavior. Abused children often appear scared, anxious, depressed, withdrawn or more aggressive.
• Return to Earlier Behaviors. Abused children may display behaviors shown at earlier ages, such as thumb-sucking bed-wetting, fear of the dark or strangers.
• Fear of Going Home. Abused children may express apprehension or anxiety about leaving school or about going places with the person who is abusing them.
• Changes in Eating. The stress, fear and anxiety caused by abuse can lead to changes in a child’s eating behaviors, resulting in significant weight gain or loss.
• Changes in sleeping. Abused children may have frequent nightmares or have difficulty falling asleep, and as a result may appear tired or fatigue.
• Changes in School Performance and Attendance. Abused children may have difficulty concentrating or have excessive absences, sometimes due to adults trying to hide the child’s injuries from authorities.
• Lack of Personal Care or Hygiene. Abused and neglected children may appear uncared for. They may present as consistently dirty and have severe body odor, or lack sufficient clothing for weather.
• Risk Taking Behaviors. Young people who are being abused may engage in high-risk activities such as using drugs or alcohol or carrying a weapon.
• Inappropriate Sexual Behaviors. Children who have been sexually abused may exhibit overly sexualized behavior or use explicit sexual language

Anglers Perspective: I’m sick and tired of talking about it!

It’s finally time to put the topic of forward-facing sonar to rest. Last week I gave a great breakdown on this topic. Now, I’m tired of all the debates of banning this new technology. I’m tired of hearing all the whining from anglers who either can’t master it or just refuse to learn it. It’s time to put this topic to rest and move forward!

This controversy is no different than any other issues that have risen in other sports. This is not about some drug that is enhancing an angler’s ability to perform and fish better. It has nothing to with any one angler having a bigger advantage over another. Why? Because every angler has the right and access to the same technology as the next one.

The problem with this controversy is the fact that it’s not the young anglers who are complaining. It’s the guys who have helped build the sport of professional bass fishing into what it is today. It’s the legends of the sport and guys who have made a good living fishing with B.A.S.S. or Major League Fishing (MLF).

They don’t like the fact that today’s young anglers are stepping out onto the big stage and not just competing with them, but winning tournaments. They feel that forward-facing sonar is the only reason this is happening. So rather than get on board and get better with it, some have chosen to file complaints.

I relate to this topic the same way I had to become a better hitter in order to get the opportunity to get drafted by Major League Baseball.

One thing that separates an average hitter from a great hitter is the ability to hit the curve ball. This one thing has kept more baseball players out of the highest level than any other baseball skill.

Until I got better and learned how to go with the pitch, I was only an average hitter. But I spent two years of my college career getting better with countless hours hitting in a batting cage and working off a batting tee. This was hours of what is referred to as soft toss and programing my body to hit the curve ball and go with the pitch.

I didn’t go and complain to Major League Baseball and push for a “no curve ball rule!” No, I worked at it and got better by putting in the work! This same effort needs to be applied by these fishing pros. Instead of using the offseason to go hunting, it might be a good career move to get on the lake and get better using forward-facing sonar.

Here’s some food for thought. If the older anglers on tour were winning with this new technology, would anyone be complaining about it? If Rick Clunn or Kevin Van Dam was kicking everyone’s butt with it, I’ll bet a dollar-to-a-donut that all pros would be figuring out how to get better with forward-facing sonar!

So, for all the anglers that just can’t seem to grasp this new forward-facing technology, you’ve got two choices: either get better with it or load your boats and go home. You cannot stop technology in an age where a new computer today is out of date before the end of the month you bought it.

It’s like any other advancements in the bass fishing world, forward-facing sonar is here to stay. Stop waiting on B.A.S.S. or MLF to make rule changes to accommodate the older anglers. In the words of my team partner who got tired of my negative complaining, “Shut up and fish you big baby!”

Michelle Bartlett, Health Information Manager for Jackson Parish Ambulance Service in Jonesboro has successfully conquered the NREMT Psychomotor and Cognitive Testing to become an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. 

Despite her responsibilities, Bartlett finished the the course with the top GPA in her class, never letting her obligations become an obstacle to finding new ways to serve Jackson Parish.

2024 EMT Class Prepare to Take License Exams

The 2024 EMT Class at the Jackson Parish Ambulance Service has finished course study and now prepare take on the NREMT Psychomotor & Cognitive exams in a few weeks. The group has been in class for four months under the guidance of Instructors: James Horn, Jeff Carpenter, JoLynn Smith, Suzanne Currington, Jonathon Cummings, and Aaron Johnson.

The Jackson Council on the Aging has declared the following vehicles as surplus and authorize sale of each vehicle separately by sealed bids to the highest bidder. 

2010 Ford Transit
2012 Ford Transit

These vehicles may be inspected Monday-Thursday from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm and on Fridays from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm.

Each vehicle is sold “as is” .

Bids for each vehicle must be submitted in an envelope, clearly marked “Sealed Bid” with year of vehicle. 

Bids should be submitted no later than 3:30 pm on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

Bids will be opened at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 25, 2024

The Jackson Council on the Aging reserves the right to reject any or all bids.

Chatham Woman Killed in Single Car Accident Near Vernon

Vernon – On Friday, April 19, 2024, shortly before 2:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash on LA 146 near Nig-Dorsey Road. The crash claimed the life of 82-year-old Geneva Williams of Chatham.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2016 Nissan Sentra, driven by 37-year-old Brittney Williams, was traveling east on LA-146. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan exited the roadway to the right and struck a tree.

Geneva Williams, who was properly restrained and the front seat passenger in the Nissan, was pronounced dead at the scene. Brittney Williams, who was properly restrained, received moderate injuries and was transported to
an area hospital for treatment.

Although impairment is not suspected, routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Follow all traffic laws and always ensure that every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.

In 2024, Troop F has investigated 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 deaths.


Sulphur Bound! Quitman qualifies for Division V State Softball Tournament

Sweet Victory!

By beating 9th seeded Calvin 9-1 in the LHSAA Division V quarterfinals on Thursday, Quitman High School punched their ticket to the state softball tournament in Sulphur. 

One thing for sure, the Lady Wolverines know the way to the Frasch Softball Complex, where the semifinals and finals will be played. After all, this will make the third time in the last four years QHS will have been there. In 2021, the Lady Wolverines reached the semi-finals and last year QHS finished as Division V runner-up after losing 2-1 to Converse in 9 innings. 

As fate would have it, Quitman will get a chance for revenge as they will face the defending state champions in the semi-finals on April 26th on Field #17 of the expansive sports complex. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.

Quitman enters the semifinal contest as champion of district 1B and with a sterling 27-4 record that includes a 16-0 victory over Monterey and the 9-1 win on Thursday. Converse finished as runner-up in district 3B and sports a 16-8 mark after beating Pitkin 7-2 in the regionals and Bell City 15-5 in the quarterfinals. 

The matchup is apropos as it allows for some unfinished business to be taken care of. Last year Quitman came into the game as the higher ranked team, as is the case this year, with QHS being ranked #1 in the state and Converse being seeded #5.

A victory sets up a finals matchup against the winner between #6 Stanley and #7 Anacoco in the finals that are scheduled to be played on Field #13 at 12:00 pm on Saturday, April 27th. 

The Lady Wolverines are primed to complete the task of winning the state title. While QHS has not played Converse this season, they did beat Zwolle, who won district 3B and was ranked #2 in the state by a 9-2 score. Quitman has also beaten both Stanley and Anacoco by 7-2 and 13-7 scores respectively during the regular season.

Quitman 9 Calvin 1 – After spotting the perineal Class C softball power to a 1-0 lead, the vaunted Quitman offense caught fire, scoring 9 runs over the 3rd – 5th innings to waltz their way to victory. 

Karly Huckaby, who added a double and Maggie Guyotte reached base three times each, while Madison Chaplin, who also hit a “two-bagger”, Cali Deal, Anna Leach and Marley Bell all got on base twice each. Hallie Kate Pullig, Briley Bowers and Kinsley Ponder also reached base once each as Quitman collected 10 hits and coaxed 8 walks off of Calvin pitching. Deal was the winner for QHS, spinning a two hitter and striking out 11 while not allowing an earned run.

Vote for Renewal of Jackson Parish Council on Aging Millage Urged

(paid advertorial) – Saturday, April 27, 2024, is election day in Jackson Parish and you will be asked to vote for the “RENEWAL” of a 2.5 mils Property Tax for the Jackson Parish Council on Aging (JPCOA). The purpose of the tax is constructing, maintaining, operating, and supporting the facilities in Jonesboro and Chatham for our elderly citizens.

This is a property tax that has been on the tax roll for years and we are asked to renew it every ten years. It is a much needed tax that allows the Jackson Parish Council on Aging to provide many needed services to our senior citizens. 

Through this funding the JPCOA provides services such as transportation to and from the doctor and the grocery store, while also bringing meals to homebound seniors and those with physical disabilities. 

It also affords the opportunity for onsite meals, exercise and entertainment to be provided at the JPCOA facilities in Jonesboro and Chatham and gives seniors the chance to meet and visit with others.

It is important that the Jackson Parish Council on Aging continue to provide services to our senior citizens. I am asking everyone that can vote in this election to join me and “VOTE YES” for the RENEWAL of this tax. We owe it to our senior citizens to provide them with the services that they need.

Remember, this is not a new tax but a RENEWAL.

JHHS wins six events at district 3-2A track meet

Jonesboro-Hodge High School won six events at the district 3-2A track meet held at Winnfield on April 18th and qualified for 15 events in the upcoming 2A Region 1 meet to be held in Mansfield on April 24th. 

Leading the charge for JHHS was Ciara Gray who won gold medals in the girls 100 and 300 meter hurdles, as well as, the long jump and triple jump. Christian McGuire also won first place in the boys 100 meter dash as did the boys 4×200 meter relay team.

DeMarious Burns also had a big day for the Tigers , finishing as runner-up in the 200 meters and triple jump while coming in third place in the 300 meter hurdles. Sanaa’ Tatum also qualified for regionals in two events by coming in second in the 200 meters and third in the long jump.

Also qualifying for the regionals by virtue of second place finishes were Daelan Boston (1600 meters), Landon Boston (Long Jump), and the girls 4×200 meter relay team as did Zu’Wy’Neshya Johnson in the girls 300 meter hurdles, boys 4×400 meter relay team and boys 4×800 meter relay team for coming in third place. 

 

 


Sunshine Festival enjoyed by Jackson Parish residents and visitors

Not even the cool temperature and intermittent rain could put a damper on the enthusiastic spirit of residents and visitors who braved the elements to participate in the annual Jackson Parish Sunshine Festival on Saturday. 

Beginning with the traditional Children’s Parade, scheduled events went as planned despite little cooperation from Mother Nature. Festival goers enjoyed visiting the many booths that lined the streets, car show, quilt turning and wide array of musicians who played in the Pocket Park on Main Street.

Quitman High boys and girls track teams win district 1B meet

By winning 17 events, including sweeping the relay events in both the boys and girls divisions and earning 38 podium placements in all for finishing in first, second or third, both the Quitman High School boys and girls track teams won the district 1B meet held at QHS on April 17th. 

Weston High had three individual event winners and saw a total of 21 earn medals for top three finishes giving Jackson Parish a strong contingent that will compete in the Regional Track Meet that will be held on April 23rd in Castor.

Several individuals stood out by winning multiple events including Gage Horton – QHS (Boys 800, 1600 meters), Nathan Harvey – QHS (Boys 110, 300 meter hurdles), Morgan Cheatwood – QHS (Girls 1600, 3200 meters), Kaleigh King -QHS (Girls 100, 300 meter hurdles), Lexie Millien – WHS (Girls High Jump, Long Jump)

JHHS baseball ends season on positive note

How a team ends one season often times is a precursor to how they will perform the next. The Jonesboro-Hodge High School baseball team certainly hopes that will be case next spring. 

It was a tough year for the Tigers. Competing with only one senior on the roster, JHHS won only 4 of the 20 games played. The youthful squad also had to endure a coaching change midway through the season. Despite the adversity, JHHS showed tremendous resilience and finished the season strong, winning two of their last four games, including a season ending 6-5 victory over Homer.  

“The effort that was shown from the boys was nothing less than remarkable,” said JHHS head coach Kris Cash. “Finishing the season on a high is something that we are all proud of. The way they fought through the adversity is a skill that is not only needed in baseball but also very important in the next steps of life.”

Perhaps the way the final game played out was the strongest testament that could be attributed to the character and determination of the team. Coming into their final at bat, the Tigers trailed 3-2 but despite not getting a hit managed to tie the game as Marquis Baker got hit by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on an error by the catcher. 

Homer then looked poised to ruin the day in the bottom of the 7th when they had runners on second and third base but winning pitcher, Pierce Ulloa struck out the next batter to end the threat.

Bolstered by the positive results of the inning before, JHHS opened the 8th with Dakota Knox, Trey Trosclair and Logan Smith all hitting singles. Walks to Ulloa, Baker and Landon Boston gave the Tigers a 6-3 lead.

Homer came back though to load the bases setting the stage for a single being hit. One, then another, crossed home plate with the runner on first sprinting home but a perfect strike from Boston in the outfield to catcher Baker cut the runner down at the plate and preserved the victory. 


Student / Athletes of the Week recognized by Jackson Parish Hospital

The Student / Athletes of the Week has been selected at the three public high schools in Jackson Parish for the week of April 14-20, 2024. Being recognized are Ciara Gray of Jonesboro-Hodge High School, Jaylin Williams from Weston High School, and Nathan Harvey at Quitman High School.

jph emblemThe honorees are chosen by select members of the faculty and staff from each school after best exemplifying what it means to be a true student-athlete through academic achievement and athletic accomplishment. Each recipient is given a commemorative T-Shirt by the Jackson Parish Hospital, who sponsors the award.

Three JP 4-H Shooting Sports Pistol Team Members Place at State

The 2024 state Shooting Sports competition ended on Saturday with three more pistol team members joining the others from Jackson Parish who placed at state, including Easton Hall, who qualified for national competition by winning first place in the Smallbore Pistol National CPR division. 

Others who placed in the state competition were:
Louis Spillers – 3rd Place (Smallbore Pistol – National CPR)
Jake Potts – 5th Place (Smallbore Pistol – National Bulls Eye)
Easton Hall – 6th Place (Smallbore Pistol – National Overall)
Jake Potts – 9th Place (Smallbore Pistol – National Overall)

Jackson Parish Library introduces first ever Poetry Walk

In honor of National Poetry Month, Jackson Parish Library hosted their very first Poetry-Walk at the Jonesboro Branch. Quitman High School students of Ms. Holly Hampton’s class participated by writing many forms of poetry that were submitted for display during the month of April.

A reception was held in their honor on April 18th and many students were brave enough to read aloud their submissions. To view their work and to enjoy the Poetry Walk, visit the Jonesboro Branch located at 614 South Polk Avenue.

Jackson Parish Golf Course announces Tuesday Scramble now being played

The Jackson Parish Golf Course has begun hosting their weekly Tuesday scramble this month, beginning a schedule that will run through August. The first tournament was played on April 16th with the team of Dwayne Harrell, DJ Harrell, Glenn Watkins, Carl Cassell and Robert Price winning with a score of 11 under par.

Teams are made up of players with descending handicaps who play 18 holes in a scramble format. To register for the next tournament, call the Jackson Parish Golf Course at 318-259-7247 or sign up in the clubhouse located at 524 Clubhouse Drive at least 30 minutes before tee off time on Tuesday.
