Jackson Parish lake tailor-made for hot action and trophies in April

As Louisiana’s weather heats up, so does the bass fishing, especially at Caney Lake in Jackson Parish. Built in 1986, this lake was tailor-made for trophy bass, and it has delivered beyond expectations. With six of Louisiana’s top 10 largest bass calling it home, Caney Lake is a bass angler’s paradise. In the early months of the year, anglers find giant pre-spawn bass, but they are often hard to catch. But as the weather warms, it’s easier to catch fish, even though there might not be as many double digits caught.

Local Monroe native Chris Nguyen fishes the lake regularly and shared how he targets these feisty fish.

Sight fish
As the water warms, bass move to shallower waters for the spawn. By mid-April, many bass have already spawned, but there are still plenty of late spawners lingering in shallow water. And here’s the kicker: unless there is an overabundance of rain, Caney Lake offers crystal-clear waters, a rarity in Louisiana. That means sight fishing, where you can lock eyes with your prize beneath the surface.

“I love Caney because of the water clarity,” Nguyen said. “This time of the year is my favorite because I can sight fish.”

Armed with a Shimano reel and G Loomis rod, he prowls the shallows with a Green Pumpkin Zoom Baby Brush Hog. Sneaking up on visible structure, he entices strikes from lurking lunkers.

“I was just fishing and happened to look down and saw a big fish beside a stick up in eight feet of water”, he said. “I threw my bait at her, and the 4-pound male came out and ate it.”

Knowing from experience that an even larger female could be in the same area, Nguyen chose to cast back to the same location.

“On the first cast I saw her nose down on my bait but she didn’t take it,” he said. “I could tell she was very interested in it, so I threw back in there a second time and she didn’t like that.”

His savvy and persistence paid off big time when he hooked the 8.75-pound female. Patience pays this time of year at Caney.

Load up at one spot
Once you find one hotspot, there are likely more staging bass in the general area.

“Once I found the fish, they weren’t too scattered,” Nguyen said. “I worked the area thoroughly and caught several more in one cove.”

The fish transitioning in and out of the clear shallow water also offers an exciting opportunity to see the fish attack your bait, which makes the experience even more captivating.

“You have a chance to catch the biggest fish right now while they are up spawning,” Nguyen said. “It is fun to watch them eat.”

Other fish that have already spawned are also hanging around the edges and holes in the grassbeds on the lake.

Although Nguyen is drawing on his decades of experience on Caney to target these fish, the high population of trophy fish in the lake make it a likely possibility for anyone to land one of these beasts.

“Springtime is the best time to get out on the water,” he said. “The weather is nice, and the fish are moving up shallow and eating anything you throw at them.”

Brown’s Trek Through the Outdoors Includes New Book

There are plenty of folks who include the outdoors as a part of their lives. They hunt; they fish; they hike but their nine-to-five jobs occupy the majority of their time.
For a handful of others, the outdoors is basically their life; they’re consumed with the
woods and waters. That’s why this select group can’t wait to wake up every morning and go to their job in some form of make their living in outdoor industries. John Brown is just such a fellow.

For the 57 year old Brown, it started some 30-odd years ago when he teamed up with fellow Ruston High School graduate, Rex Moncrief to plan, film produce and star in an outdoor television show, “The Outdoor News”, which ran for a few years on area TV stations.

Wanting more exposure to the outdoors, Brown had become adept at handling video
equipment and he began doing free-lance video works for such outdoors-related companies as Knight and Hale, Primos, Mossy Oak. His work caught the attention of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and for near 30 years, Brown worked with that organization eventually becoming executive producer of their television and video work.

Aside from his involvement with the outdoors, Brown developed an interest in coaching youth baseball. While living in Edgefield, SC, headquarters of the NWTF, he coached youngsters and in 2019, his team of 12 year olds won the national championship. Interestingly, the tourney was held in Ruston.

“I came to Ruston for the tournament and it was like a homecoming to me. I wanted to plant myself back here in north Louisiana where I was raised. I told my boss at the NWTF I wanted to take an early retirement so I could move back home,” said Brown.

After retiring, Brown and his wife, a retired school teacher, live in the country outside West Monroe. Has he retired from his outdoors ventures? That’s not in Brown’s DNA. He writes features for LA Sportsman magazine and has taken a consuming interest in 51 acres of land in Caldwell Parish his dad had purchased before he passed away last year. Brown is converting the property his dad left him to a mecca for wildlife.

“When I first walked over the property, it was so thick and overgrown you could hardly
pick your way through it. There was no way you could think about finding a turkey track. For the past year and a half I have worked on the land, clearing brush and establishing food plots. Last week,” said Brown, “I called up two longbeard gobblers, a hen and six jakes at one time. “I have rededicated myself to telling the conservation story that no matter if a piece of property is large or small, if you work on the habitat, wildlife will react and find it.”

Brown’s next project, which will reach fruition on April 30, is his book, “Gathering
Light’, which will be released on that date.

“Before he passed away, my dad had encouraged me to write down what I had done in stories I could pass down as a legacy to my kids and grandchildren. I finally did it. The book tells about my growing up in Franklin Parish on the Tensas River as well as my outdoors-related work down through the years,” he said.

The hard cover book as well as in E-book form will be available starting April 30. Search for it on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.

This book will appeal to not only outdoorsmen and women but with John Brown’s God given ability to tell a story, it’s a book anyone will enjoy reading.

FISHING REPORT

CANEY LAKE – Big chinquapins are on the beds and some real good fish are being caught on small crawfish, worms and crickets. Best bass catches are made fairly shallow on Wacky Worms, Sinko, Bandits and spinners with some moving out to deeper water. Crappie are best fishing jigs or shiners around submerged tops in 12 foot water. BLACK BAYOU –Bream are starting to bite crickets and worms around the trees. No report on crappie or bass. Contact Honey Hole Tackle Shop 323-8707 for latest information.
BUSSEY BRAKE – Bass fishing is good with some to 11 pounds caught flipping creature baits around the trees. Crappie have moved off the banks and hitting jigs and shiners in the flats. For latest information, contact the Honey Hole at 323-8707.
OUACHITA RIVER – The water is high, rising and muddy and nobody is fishing. For latest information, contact the Honey Hole Tackle Shop at 323-8707.
LAKE D’ARBONNE – Crappie are good with some still spawning in the shallows and some moving to the flats. Shiners and jigs are catching them. Some bass are still spawning around the grass with some moving out and hitting crank baits and soft plastics.. Catfishing is improving fishing cold worms off the banks. The bream are on the beds up and hitting crickets and night crawlers. For latest information, call Anderson Sport Center at 368-9669 or Honey Hole Tackle Shop at 323-8707.
LAKE CLAIBORNE – Crappie are starting to move out to 12 foot water and are hitting mostly shiners. Bass are best fishing Carolina rigs, spinners and jerk baits around the docks. Stripers are beginning to school and hitting shad imitation lures. Bream are on the beds and worms and crickets are working on them. Catfishing has been good on night crawlers. LAKE POVERTY POINT – Catfishing is good and the bream are moving to the beds and hitting worms and crickets. Crappie have moved off the banks and are fair. No report on bass. For latest reports, call Poverty Point Marina at 318/878-0101.
LAKE YUCATAN – The water is quite high and rising and nobody is fishing. For information, call Surplus City Landing at 318/467-2259.


Amy’s Gymnastics to have 15th Annual Recital on April 27th

Ten groups of girls and boys from Jackson Parish will be featured this Saturday, April 27th as Amy’s Gymnastics will hold their 15th annual recital at the Ruston Sports Complex. Show times are scheduled for 10:00 am, 12:30 and 3:00 pm. 

Operated by local resident, Amy Hudson, classes are run in Jonesboro and Ruston, teaching recreational gymnastics to boys and girls as soon as they can walk, in Mommy and Me classes, and all the way to 20 yr old girls. There is also an adult exercise class.

Forest Haven residents attend Steel Magnolias dress rehearsal at Dixie Inn

A group from Forest Haven Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center enjoyed a wonderful day in Ruston this past week when they attended a dress rehearsal for Dixie Inn’s performance of Steel Magnolias. The outing was part of the ongoing activity schedule the administration and staff provides for their residents. Also, those with birthdays in April were recognized with cakes presented to Judy Pardue, Luda Norred, Joanna Otwell and John Hall.

Constructive Correction

I was young; yet, I knew the difference between right and wrong. Choosing good behavior was always the right thing to do. If I behaved, my parents and teachers would give their approval. On the other hand; my bad behavior resulted in disapproval and discipline.

It wasn’t enough to know what was right and wrong. Sometimes, I made bad choices.

“You have not yet struggled to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; and you have forgotten the divine word of encouragement which is addressed to you as sons,

‘My son, do not make light of the discipline of the Lord,
And do not lose heart and give up when you are corrected by Him;

For the Lord disciplines and corrects those whom He loves,
And He punishes every son whom He receives and welcomes [to His heart].’

You must submit to [correction for the purpose of] discipline; God is dealing with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? Now if you are exempt from correction and without discipline, in which all [of God’s children] share, then you are illegitimate children and not sons [at all]. Moreover, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we submitted and respected them [for training us]; shall we not much more willingly submit to the Father of spirits, and live [by learning from His discipline]? For our earthly fathers disciplined us for only a short time as seemed best to them; but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. For the time being no discipline brings joy, but seems sad and painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness [right standing with God and a lifestyle and attitude that seeks conformity to God’s will and purpose] (Hebrews 12:4-11 AMP Bible).”

Malcolm Grames Watts
February 7, 1930 – April 17, 2024

wattsMalcolm Grames Watts, age 94 of Weston, was called to his Heavenly home on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Malcolm was born February 7, 1930 to the union of Orion and Ethel (Odom) Watts. He grew up in Weston, Louisiana and raised his family alongside the love of his life, Jessie (Walker) Watts. Malcolm and Jessie were blessed with 71 years of marriage and four beautiful daughters. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and worked hard to provide for his family as a farmer. He had many accomplishments and pioneered many advancements throughout his farming career. His steel truss techniques in building chicken houses have become instrumental and those ways are still used to build them today. He had the first air conditioned tractor in the area. Malcolm loved his cows and chickens and always like conversing about them with his son in laws. He also enjoyed gardening and grew and shared many vegetables over the years. Malcolm was skilled in archery and liked to compete in competitions. He loved his family more than anything. Watching all the grands play ball was so special to him. Malcolm enjoyed the simple things in life, like sitting on his back porch. He and Jessie enjoyed watching the sunrise on the front porch and to watch it set on the back porch.

Those left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Jessie (Walker) Watts, daughters, Debbie (Watts) Henderson Pepper and Edward, Ethel (Watts) Smith and Raymond, Melanie (Watts) Ogden, Charlotte Watts and Mike Cooper; grandchildren, Amanda Coody, Trent Henderson and Tina, Chaylan Petre, Toby Henderson and Lauren, Bo Smith and Amy, Patrick Smith and Nicole, Josh Coody, Chase Coody and Crystal, Sean Coody and Sarah, 25 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, sister in law, June Watts; a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orion Grayson and Ethel Mae (Odom) Watts, Sr.; brothers, Valton Hope Watts (Rosemary), Lehman Delano Watts (Vernell), Orion Grayson Watts, Jr.; sisters, Grace (Watts) Enmon, Bonnie (Watts) Smith (Kenneth); son in laws, Randy Henderson, Pat Ogden, Lane Coody; great grandson, Cole Smith; grandson in law, Greg Coody; granddaughter in law, Autumn Henderson.

A graveside service was held on Friday, April 19, 2024 at Ebenezer Cemetery with Bro. Chris Lee officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home.

Serving the family as pallbearers was Logan Petre., Raymond Smith, Trent Henderson, Dakota Henderson, Dreydan Henderson and Zach Culver. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Moore, Edward Pepper, Josh Coody, Patrick Smith, Sean Coody, Toby Henderson, Chase Coody, Mike Cooper, Randon LeBlanc and Devin LeBlanc.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Ebenezer Cemetery.

Billy Ray “Bill” Stringer
August 21, 1940 – April 17, 2024

stringerBilly Ray “Bill” Stringer passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at his residence in Jonesboro, Louisiana. He was 83 years old. Bill loved yard work, and mowing his grass was one of his favorite things to do. He was a perfectionist. Bill also enjoyed fishing off of his pier in his back yard. He loved traveling, and especially enjoyed going to the mountains. Bill was an outspoken individual. Right or wrong, he would give you his opinion.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Robinson) Stringer; sons, Bill Stringer (Melissa), and Steve Stringer (DeAnna); daughter, Cheryl Stringer; grandchildren, Tabatha Meredith, Treasure Daniel (Dean Holcomb), Tiffany Watson (Jeff), Tasha Kirkpatrick (Ryan), Josh Stringer (Kasey), Joey Stringer (Danielle), Kirk Jury, Dee Jury, Savion Jury, Shay Jury and Ivy Stringer; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Walter Stringer (Flora).

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann (Duck) Stringer; father, Gwin A. Stringer; mother, Marie (Pierce) Stringer; stepson, Chris Robinson.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, April 20, 2024 in the Southern-Edmonds Chapel at 10:00AM. Bro. Randy Dark and Bro. Michael McNatt officiated.

Burial was in the Garden of Memories in Jonesboro under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home.

 


Sunshine Festival this Saturday, April 20th

One of the most anticipated events of the year for residents of Jackson Parish and visitors from surrounding areas takes place on Saturday as the Sunshine Festival is celebrated in Jonesboro.

As usual main street in Jonesboro will be full of young and old alike as they stroll among the vendor booths, enjoy the live music and marvel at the antique cars that will be on the Jay Mallard Ford car lot for the viewing. 

Kicking off the festivities will be the Children’s Parade at 10:00 am.  At the same time the annual Quilt Turning by the Heritage Quilt Guild will take place at the Jonesboro Branch of the Jackson Parish Library. 

A great lineup of musicians and bands are also on tap to perform in the Pocket Park from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm as shown below highlighted by the Nouveau String Band from Lafayette Louisiana , sponsored by the Jackson Parish Museum and Fine Arts performing from 1:00 – 3:30 pm.

Weston, Quitman receive 1st round byes in LHSAA baseball playoffs

The high rankings achieved by the baseball teams of Jackson Parish schools, Weston and Quitman, have paid great dividends as both have received first round byes in the 2024 LHSAA Division V playoffs.

District 1B champion Weston (19-13), enters the postseason as the #2 seed in the “non-select” bracket. After receiving a first round bye, the Wolves will host the winner of #15 Choudrant and #18 Hackberry in the regional round. 

Quitman (15-10), which finished as runner-up to Weston in district 1B, also received a first round bye after being seeded #5 in the 24 team bracket. The Wolverines will host the winner of #12 Doyline and #21 Ebarb. 


Quitman to host Calvin in Division V Softball Quarterfinals


One down, one to go! That is what is left of the mission of the Quitman High School softball team to get back to the LHSAA Division V state tournament in Sulphur.

The #1 ranked, Lady Wolverines punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the “non-select” bracket by mashing Monterey 16-0 in the second round, setting up a 5:00 pm, Thursday, April 18th matchup against Calvin. The contest is set to be played at Quitman High School, weather permitting.

No luck needed! There are many who believe that 13 is an unlucky number. Maybe so, but not when it represents the number of runs that your team scores in one inning. That is what Quitman did in the bottom of the fourth inning. In that scenario it will close out your opponent and advance you to the next round, without any luck needed.

The Lady Wolverines put the finishing touches on the contest in “smashing style “walk-off” fashion as 8th grader, Hallie Kate Pullig, hit her first ever postseason homerun to drive in A. J. Gray and give QHS the 16 run advantage that allowed the game to be called due to the “mercy rule.” The homer continued Pullig’s late season power surge, and marked her 5th “round tripper” of the year and 4th in the last 6 games.

It also marked the second home run of the inning as three batter earlier, Madison Chaplin smacked her career best, 8th “tater” of the year to drive in Taylor Harvey and Marley Bell that gave Quitman a 13-0 advantage.

In all reality, when Bell walked in the 2nd inning that forced in Brenna Lamkin to give Quitman a 1-0 lead it was all that winning pitcher Cali Deal would need. The returning Class B All-Stater improved her season record to 17-3 by spinning a three hit shutout, the 10th time this season she had not allowed a run to an opponent.

Boil Order Rescinded for Chatham Water System

The Boil Order that had been in place for the customers of the New Hope St. Clair division of the Chatham Water System has been lifted, meaning that residents can now safely use the water once again without threat of bacteria or disease. 

Chatham Mayor Gregory Harris announced the Boil Order had been lifted after receiving confirmation from the Louisiana Department of Health Sanitation Division District Compliance Officer.

Big turnout hoped for on April 20th for Clean-Up Day

In accordance with “Love the Boot” week and the statewide “Keep Louisiana Beautiful” campaign, the Jackson Parish Police Jury has declared Saturday, April 20th as Clean-Up Day in Jackson Parish.

Residents are asked to clean up all roadway ditches on their property as well as join with representatives of the JPPJ to help clean up community areas and roadways in Jackson Parish.

JHHS once again selected to take part in Bayou Jamb

Jonesboro-Hodge High School will once again take part in the annual pre-season gathering of the top programs in north Louisiana, with the Tigers slated to play Red River High as one of 8 games to be played in the 2024 Bayou Jamb.

Moving back to it’s long time location of Malone Stadium on the campus of University of Louisiana-Monroe after a two year hiatus, the Bayou Jamb once again promises two tremendous days of prep football competition.

Local track teams to compete for district honors Wednesday & Thursday

All three Jackson Parish high schools will see their girls and boys track programs compete for district honors on Wednesday and Thursday with Quitman and Weston vying for the district 1B title and JHHS competing for the district 3-2A crown.

Quitman will play host to the district 1B meet that will see the host Wolverines, Weston, Doyline and Castor compete in girls and boys action. JHHS will travel to Winnfield High for the district 3-2A meet that will see host Winnfield, JHHS, Many, Red River, Lakeview, and Mansfield take part. 


Ponderings…..

Often, we are judged by our shape.

Our brain comes pre-packaged with a confirmation bias that allows us to justify our own perceptions and beliefs as being accurate, realistic, and unbiased. Social psychologist Lee Ross calls this phenomenon “naïve realism,” the inescapable conviction that we perceive objects and events clearly, “as they really are.” It is this “naïve realism” that causes us to judge individuals based on their size and shape.

If they are of a certain shape, we make judgments about the quality of their character based on our perception of their shape. Our perceptions and assumptions must be accurate, realistic, and unbiased because they are our perceptions.

People who are slim shaped are viewed as being active and bright. They might be judged as being quick, hardworking, and athletic. It could be true. It might not be true.

In our politically correct culture, one should not point out shapes or comment on them. Yet this happens all the time. There is much “body shaming” on the Internet which is really “size assumption shaming.” I am perpetually stunned by skinny people who are “body shamed” as being too fat.

In your mind there is a vision of the “perfect shape.” I hope your body self-image is a healthy one. Some of us have been judged by our shape. We even participate in self-talk based on what the culture teaches our shape means. I hope that no matter your shape you are taking care of your health.

And how do we talk about taking care of our health? Are you “in shape?” Currently, I am “out of shape.” I am working on “shaping up” so I can be “in shape.”

My goal is to take on the shape of Jesus. I want my heart to be shaped like His heart so I will love like He loves. I want my eyes to see the world like His eyes. I want my hands to reach out like His hands. I want each day to reflect Jesus in my life rather than my own reflection. I have discovered that Jesus challenges my assumptions and transforms my perceptions.

How do you shape up?

My friend Monica is married to Lee. They have a nine-year-old son named Grisham. The other day Lee was teaching Grisham how to measure a piece of wood before cutting it. I hope Lee reminded his son of the aphorism, “measure twice and cut once.”

Grisham patiently watched his dad measure and cut the wood. I forgot to ask if Grisham was allowed to solo on his own piece of wood. The young man did have a good time with his dad.

Grisham thanked his father for taking the time to teach him the valuable lesson about measuring wood before cutting it. It is a great story about a dad slowing down enough to take time to teach his son.

Nine-year-old Grisham said to his dad, “Thank you for showing me how to do that. I know you want me to grow up to be a well-rounded individual, even though right now I am just a chunky oval.”

Grisham knows at a deep place he, like all of us, is a work in progress.

His shape is not in its final form nor is yours!


Quitman Golf Team wins District Title

District Champs!

With three of the five players that teed off for Quitman in the district championship golf tourney played at Frenchman’s Bend in Monroe, shooting a round in the 70’s the Wolverines easily claimed the District 1 crown.

The Wolverines finished with a team score of 313, well ahead of 331 score shot by Ouachita Christian. Cedar Creek came in third place with a team total of 338. Weston finished 4th place overall of the 12 teams that competed.  

Eli Walker led the way for QHS, firing an even par round of 72 to win Medalist honors. Pete Simonelli was right on his heels also, turning in a season best round of 76 to finish in third individually. Ian Tilley was the third Wolverine to score in the 70’s, firing a 79 to earn a 6th place finish. Tyler Pardue of Weston also had good day, ending with a score of 84, while Tayt Culpeppr of Weston and Noah Leach of Quitman played the 18 hole course in 86 strokes each. 

Cayden Smith and Jackson Kennard shot rounds of 95 an 96 for Weston while Hudson Pullig scored 99 for Quitman. Cam Mire also ended with a score of 116 for Weston. 


Over the hill, and Dale

Didn’t recognize him behind the beard and the years so said my name and he looked up from his lunchtime burger and wiped his mouth and his handshake hand, smiled and said, “Dale Shields.”

Good lord. Dale Shields. (Not the same person, but in the same ballpark.)

One day we were talking about how to pass Mr. Jones’ senior physics class at West Monroe High School or what to do the night of our Class of 1977 graduation, and the next time we talked it was about Medicare and grandchildren in a grill on an overcast Monday.

“So, what have YOU been up to for the past 45 years?”

Some people you dodge or they dodge you by design or by destiny.

And some people you want to see but you just don’t because life happens that way.

We don’t always get to decide.

But life’s a funny dog, so it drops dessert on your plate now and then and serves up an old friend who, if you’re lucky, is either Dale Shields or something close.

He’d driven over from his home in West Monroe for some early morning turkey hunting around Downsville. Still had on his high-water rubber boots. Quietly eating. Available but not obvious. Which has always been 100 percent The Dale Shields Way.

Absolutely one of the best we’ve got in your whole Human Race Department.

Been since the 1987 class reunion since I’d seen him, so he caught me up on the most recent one, just a few years ago. Some classmates had died since the 2017 reunion “so we decided we weren’t going to wait for the 50th one,” he said, and told me about the one just a couple years ago, who was there and all.

Dale Shields. In high school, you could have asked anyone and they’d have trusted Dale with anything from a secret to your wallet or purse. Offensive tackle. FCA. Baseball. Y-Teen Beau. National Honor Society. The “A” in America.

Every single time I’ve thought of him over the past near-half century I’ve thought, for at least a nano-second, of the one-bathroom house he grew up in. One of six boys and two girls fathered by Mr. Hugh, who captained the morning bathroom and somehow got all those kids grown and off to school every day of the world. Funny what you remember. Some mornings before first period: “Hey Dale, how’d it go with the bathroom thing this morning?” Daybreak after daybreak must have instilled in him the patience of Job, an outlook optimistic, a colon of iron. Each morning an adventure.

Major tip of the ballcap to his whole wonderful family.

We talked of his recent retirement after 40 years of work with a local company, and he told me about signing up for Medicare; he’s had his Official Card for two weeks now. When 65 knocks, you and the guys talk not so much about turkey hunting and ball scores as you do about how to successfully sign up for Medicare, which to me seems about as difficult as carving Thomas Jefferson’s face into the side of Mount Rushmore.

I’m about to find out for my ownself, being just a few months younger than Dale…Time is the great mystery.

We traded phone numbers and grandchildren stories. We have one. He has No. 12 on the way, and the parents have decided not to find out the flavor yet since they already have one of each. I told him “Teddy” would work for a boy or girl; he smiled and promised to pass that along.

Dale Shields. Day made.

About an hour later I missed a call from him. Made my heart feel good to see his name on my phone. Probably going to say it was good to see me, talk again soon, that kind of deal. I called him back quickly as I could.

In his humble and sincere Dale Shields voice — I could see him smiling — he said, “Butt dial. Sorry. The ol’ butt dial.”

Eight complete Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course

Eight men and women have completed the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course held at the Jackson Parish Ambulance Service Training Center in Jonesboro. 

Instructors, JoLynn Smith and Suzanne Currington guided the new generation of EMS professionals through the course, putting each in the position to take the NREMT test in order obtain their AEMT license. .

“Little Charlie”

As a child, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, called Charlie by everyone who knew him, was a shy boy. He was often ridiculed in school and was usually the last student chosen to play team sports during recess. A large part of his shyness came from a speech impediment which he shared to some extent with at least six members of his large family. Conversation was hard for little Charlie. His speech was filled with awkward hesitation. He could form his thoughts perfectly, but he struggled to project his words orally. Little Charlie loved to read because the words flowed so easily. When asked to read aloud, the hesitation often returned. His speech impediment was unpredictable. Little Charlie never knew which words or phrases would cause him trouble. A word that he had spoken thousands of times without incident could suddenly become a problem. Every spoken word was a potential pitfall. The other students teased and mocked little Charlie until his speech impediment manifested into an occasional blockage. Their taunts were often answered non-verbally by little Charlie’s fists. When little Charlie was faced with a blockage, which was normally mid-sentence, he had no choice but to abruptly end the conversation without explanation.

During the Victorian era, many middle-class children created their own homemade magazines as a form of entertainment. These magazines usually contained local gossip, hand-drawn pictures, stories, and riddles thrown together seemingly at random. Through this medium, little Charlie learned that he could communicate more effectively through writing than he could verbally. Biographer Robert Douglas-Fairhurst said that for little Charlie, “The blank page released his tongue.” Whereas most of the Victorian children’s homemade magazines had no rhyme or reason, little Charlie’s magazines were thematic and normally contained a table of contents and a detailed index. For example, one of his homemade magazines pertained to things that began with the letter “M.” His magazines were usually bound with string between a cover made from a recycled school notebook.

Little Charlie never wanted to grow up. He became somewhat obsessed with all things little. For him, it appeared that once a person accepted that they had reached adulthood, the paradise of childhood was lost forever. In his own mind, little Charlie envisioned the bullies of his childhood as little people. He envisioned elephants the size of mice. He often wrote letters to friends in words that were so small that reading them required a magnifying glass.

Little Charlie’s magazines became popular with his family and friends. In them, little Charlie created whimsical worlds as well as nonsensical words. He escaped from the real world into his own creations. As a teenager, little Charlie became a published author of poems and articles. By the age of 24, everything Charlie had published had been anonymous or under assumed initials. Several of his early stories and poems were published under the initials B.B. which had a meaning that Charlie never revealed. In 1856, when Charlie submitted a story for the Comic Times, editor Edmund Yates refused to publish it under his pseudonym B.B. and insisted on an alternative. Charlie submitted a list of potential pen names which were elaborate variations on his real name such as Edgar Cuthwellis and Edgar U.C. Westhall. All but one on the list was rejected by the editor. On March 1, 1856, Charlie wrote in his diary that he and the editor had chosen a name, one which was a derivative of his first and middle names in reverse order in schoolboy Latin. He converted Ludwidge to Ludovicus then to Lewis, and Charles to Carolus then to Carroll. Nine years after adopting his pen name, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson published his most notable story “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” under the pen name Lewis Carroll.
