It’s been a long time coming but soon, 2022-23 district 1B MVP, Briley Peterson of Weston High School, will be back on the court playing the game she loves. After missing all of the 2023-24 prep basketball season due to injury, Peterson will once again be a member of the LA Elite summer ball team that she played for last summer.griffin Joining her on the 12 girl roster is 8th grader, Carly Jo Griffin, who exploded on the varsity scene for Weston High this past prep season.

Anglers Perspective! Is it time to retire or join the party?

For every athlete the day comes when you’re no longer able to compete either due to age or a career ending injury. Well, for today’s senior bass pros, or what most call the legends of the sport, that day might be approaching a lot sooner than many of them had planned. Today, let’s look at why so many of these elderly pros are looking to load their boats and go home….for good.

Just like any other sport, athletes come to a point in their careers in which they start to contemplate retirement. There comes a day for all athletes where you just can’t compete anymore. So many of today’s bass fishing pros are at that point, mainly due to a technological advancement called forward-facing sonar (FFS). Nothing has impacted the bass fishing world like this latest form of technology.

So, why is this technology having such an impact on the older anglers? Well, I guess it’s the fact that FFS has played right into the hands of the younger generation of anglers moving up into professional bass fishing. They have embraced this technology and taken it to another level which has cut their learning curve and their ability to find fish by 75%. Today’s young anglers all grew up playing video games and FFS for these young anglers is nothing more than just that… a video game.

The old school anglers have not embraced this technology nearly as well as the younger guys and it shows in the tournament results. For proof, look at the Angler of the Year (AOY) standings and you’ll see names like Matt Herren, Lee Livesay, John Cox, Greg Hackney, Jason Christie, Michael Iaconelli, and the 4-time World champion…. Rick Clunn. As of this writing, all are in the bottom 50 of the AOY standings.

So why are the older anglers not accepting FFS? Some feel that FFS is not good for the sport in the long run and would like to see some restrictions or rule changes made to help level the playing field and protect the fisheries. But most will tell you that this technology is here to stay as some of the older anglers are now starting to question if they are going to try and get better with FFS or just get out of the sport all together. Most of these anglers will wait and see if B.A.S.S. or MLF make any major rule adjustments to their circuits regarding FFS before they decide to leave the sport they love so much.

My conversations with several professional anglers have revealed there is some resentment to these new young anglers taking over the sport. The legends of the sport don’t like the fact that these young up-and-coming anglers haven’t paid their dues and are not just winning but dominating events immediately. The techniques that used to work for the older guys and how they have fished their whole career is now no longer allowing them to be as competitive as they once were. This has been a shock and blow to their egos.

For the older anglers, it took years of time on the water to obtain the knowledge they possess while these young guns are doing a better job of adapting to the new technology that’s available. No longer do young anglers have to go through the painful task of fishing daylight till dark in order to compete with the legendary pros.

For the young anglers on the rise, the game has changed as the word scouting today means something totally different than it did 10 years ago. The anglers who are proficient with FFS will spend their day idling, scanning, and marking school of bass that they can come back to on tournament day. Some are not even having to wet a hook in practice in order to save their fish for the tournament. A recent example is 33-year-old pro angler, Jason Hamner, who spent 14 days on Grand Lake prior to the Bassmaster Classic doing nothing but idling and marking brush tops without ever wetting a hook.

With all this being said, will this force many of the older anglers to retire and idle off into the sunset? Several have told me that it’s something they are considering as they are frustrated with both B.A.S.S. and MLF officials for not doing more to address the (FFS) technology issue. They feel that this new technology will ruin the sport over the next 5 years, as fish today no longer have a safe haven due to FFS.

Fact is, all of our lakes are under assault as more anglers across the country are purchasing these high dollar forward-facing sonar units. It’s not just bass that are being affected, it’s crappie as well. So many crappie guides have told me they are concerned as well, since these FFS units are targeting the bigger breeding population.

To put a bow on this topic and from my perspective, it appears that the senior anglers of both B.A.S.S. and MLF have a choice to make. Either get on board with FFS and get better with it or take their tackle boxes and go home because I don’t see anything changing with regards to this new technology. I truly believe it’s here to stay.

A great time was had by young and old alike at the Stephen Morgan Archery Range on the grounds of the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sports Complex this past April 5-7.

Incorporating the unique inventory of R100, which ranged from dinosaurs to Bigfoot, 100 targets were set throughout the course allowing beginners to the most advanced the opportunity to show their skills.

Born and raised in rural Central New York State; I was well accustomed to the sight of Holstein cows grazing. They ate grass slowly and chewed their cud. It wasn’t a fast food routine. Cows chew, chew and chew some more.

Chewing might bring back memories of family meal times as a child…

Mothers often chide their youngsters for eating too fast.

‘Slow down; chew your food!’

I’m thinking adults might need that same advice. I frequently tell my husband that he eats too fast.

Speaking of slow vs. fast… Should Bible reading be a speed reading event?

Meditation is like chewing a passage over and over. It’s a vital part of the spiritual digestion process. I’m not a big meat eater but do enjoy a good steak occasionally. Chewing well might take me longer. Yet, the distinct flavor on my taste buds makes that time worthwhile.

God instructed Joshua following the death of Moses. Joshua had been mentored by Moses and was stepping in as Israel’s new spiritual leader.

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Carl Huckaby, Jr.
May 3, 1947 – April 14, 2024

huckCarl Huckaby, Jr. passed away on April 14, 2024 at Northeast Louisiana Veteran’s Home in Monroe, Louisiana. He was 76 years old. Carl was born and raised in Jackson Parish. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a field radio operator during the Vietnam War. Carl entered service on September 30, 1964 and was injured on the battlefield on July 7, 1966. He was honorably discharged and retired on May 31, 1967. Carl loved watching Saints football and western movies on television. He loved talking on the phone. Carl loved God, country and family.

Carl is survived by his half siblings, Vicki Ingram, Ricky Huckaby (Teresa), Carla Landeros (Joe), Mellisa Ogden (Mike), and Melony Zimmerman (Steven); special family caregivers, Travis and Sherry Ables; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Huckaby, Sr.; mother, Mary Ben (Reed) Flores; half brother, Mark Huckaby; and infant brother, Jimmy Huckaby.

Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, from 10:00 am until 12:00 PM, at Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro. The funeral service will begin at 12:00 PM with Bro. Michael McDonald officiating. A Military Honors Burial will follow at Springhill Cemetery under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home.

Serving the family as pallbearers will be John Ables, Brody Garrett, Keith Huckaby, Ronnie Keith Huckaby, Jeff Ingram and Jimmy Robinson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Landry Garrett, Jackson Ables, Jayce Ables and the veterans of VFW Post 4317.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Northeast Louisiana Veteran’s Home in Monroe and the staff of Passages Hospice of Monroe.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Carl’s honor can be made to the Springhill Cemetery Fund or the Wounded Warriors Project.

Glen Dale Wood
June 11, 1967 – April 13, 2024

woodGlen Dale Wood passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024 in Jonesboro, Louisiana. He was 56 years old. Glen loved people and he never met a stranger. He especially loved children. He enjoyed watching all sports, including LSU and the Saints. Glen liked to play all sorts of video games and his hobby was drawing and painting.

Glen is survived by his siblings, Debbie White, Linda Harlan (Jeff), Gresham Barnes (Pat), and Robert Barnes (Mandy); adoptive mother, Patricia Sluss; 13 nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Clark Wood; mother, Glennell (Garrett) Wood; and brother, Charles Wood.

As per his wishes, Glen will be cremated. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Weston Baptist Church with Bro. Michael McNatt officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Glen’s name, to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or your local church.


Early Voting for April 27 Election begins

The Jackson Parish Clerk of Court Office announces that early voting for the April 27 Municipal General Election has begun and will run until Saturday, April 20th. Polls will be open from 8:30 am – 6:00pm each day, excluding Sunday, April 14th. Of special interest to Jackson Parish voters is the option to renew the 2.5 millage rate dedicated to the Jackson Parish Council on Aging. To cast your ballot early go to the Jackson Parish Courthouse.


Boil Advisory Issued for New Hope St. Clair Water Customers in Chatham

The Chatham Water System has been placed under boil advisory by the Louisiana Department of Health because of a power outage that took place on April 10th. This boil advisory affects New Hope St. Clair Water customers.

“Because of the power outage due to weather, the water produced by our water supply system is of questionable microbiological quality. Therefore, as a precaution, the Chatham Water System is issuing a BOIL ADVISORY effective immediately,” says Chatham Mayor Gregory Harris.

This BOIL ADVISORY is to remain in effect until rescinded by the Chatham Water System.

It is recommended that all consumers disinfect their water before consuming it (including fountain drinks), making ice, brushing teeth, or using it for food preparation or rinsing of foods by the following means:

Boil water for one (1) full minute in a clean container. The one-minute starts after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. (The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a clean bottle or pouring it from one clean container to another, or by adding a pinch of salt to each quart of water that is boiled.)

Upon notification from the Office of Public Health’s State Regional Laboratory that the samples collected from the water supply have been found to be safe, the State Health Department will notify the water supply of the sample results. Upon such notification, the Chatham Water System will then rescind the Boil Advisory and notify its customers that the water has been found to be safe.


Paradise Funeral Home in Jonesboro Moving to Temporary Location

Rising from the ashes of the devastating fire on April 10th that totally consumed the chapel on the corner of Hwy 167 and Beech Springs Hwy, Paradise Funeral Home announces the temporary move to 401 East Main Street in Jonesboro, recognized locally as the former Stage store. 

Despite the horrendous setback suffered, operations are continuing through the generosity and kindness of local pastors and churches for extending their chapels/sanctuaries for viewing/visitations and funeral services while the new location is being prepared. Quitman to host Monterey on Monday in LHSAA softball playoffs

Quitman High School will put their #1 Division V ranking among “non-select” schools on the line on Monday, April 15th when they host Monterey High School in the second round of the LHSAA softball playoffs.

The contest is slated to be played at the softball field on the Quitman High School campus with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm.  

The district 1B champions and reigning Division V state runner-up ended the regular season with a sterling 25-4 record and drew a first round bye by virtue of their top ranking.  Monterey, who placed third in district 5B and comes in with an 11-13 record and a #16 seed, advanced by beating Castor 12-4 in the first round. 

 


Jackson Parish Police Jury Declares April 20th as Clean-Up Day

In accordance with “Love the Boot” week and the statewide “Keep Louisiana Beautiful” campaign, the Jackson Parish Police Jury has declared Saturday, April 20th as Clean-Up Day in Jackson Parish.

Residents are asked to clean up all roadway ditches on their property as well as join with representatives of the JPPJ to help clean up community areas and roadways in Jackson Parish.

Local prep baseball teams enter final week of regular season

Jonesboro-Hodge, Quitman and Weston all hit the road on Monday for their final regular season game of the 2024 LHSAA baseball season. For Quitman and Weston, the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams in Division V among “non-select” schools the contest is a final tune-up before the postseason begins while JHHS will put the finishing touches on the year. 

District 1B champion Weston (19-12) will continue their season long schedule gauntlet by traveling to Class 4A North DeSoto, the 22nd school from a higher classification the Wolves have played this year. Quitman (15-9) will travel to Class 2A Winnfield for their season ending contest while JHHS (3-16) looks to end the year on a positive note by taking down Class A Homer.

JHHS 13 Lincoln Prep 1

The youthful roster and midseason change in coaching has made it a trying season for JHHS but the Tigers are finishing strong, evidenced by their victory over Lincoln Prep on Saturday. By scoring the most runs they have produced this season the Tigers won their 3rd of the year and swept the season series against their future district foe as JHHS will drop down to Class A next year. 

Logan Smith celebrated Senior Day in grand fashion by leading the Tiger offense with a 3/3 effort, including his second home run of the season, scoring twice and knocking in two runs. He also picked up the win by allowing only three hits, giving up no earned runs and striking out a career high 11 batters. Trey Trosclair also had a big day with a double, scoring three times and collecting an RBI. Dakota Knox and Landon Boston scored two runs each, Duke Tew got two hits and an RBI and Waylon Evans had a hit, scored a run and knocked in two. Marquis Baker, Pierce Ulloa and John Self also scored a run each. 

Quitman 13 Union Parish 0 

Ian Tilley and Hayden Davis combined on a one hitter and the Quitman offense saw 22 batters reach base in the 4 1/2 inning contest. Logan Ponder (3 runs), Kace West (2B, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Riley Duck ( 1 run, 2 RBI) all had two hits each with Hudson Pullig (2 runs, 1 RBI), John Reagan Hasley ( 1 run, 1 RBI), Pete Simonelli (1 RBI), Tilley (1 RBI) and Jake Potts all getting one hit apiece. Brayden Smith pitched in with two runs while Jayden Harts and Maddox Duck scored one. 

Sterlington 14 Weston 0

In a battle of second ranked teams, the Division III squad from Sterlington got the better of things as the Wolves prepared for defense of their Division V state tournament appearance from a year ago. Recently selected LHSBCA All-Star, Braden Theriot got the only hit for the Wolves against the strong Sterlington pitching staff. 

 


Grand Opening of New Pavilion celebrated at Jimmie Davis State Park

With Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser on hand to do the honors, the traditional ribbon was cut recently on the new pavilion at Jimmie Davis State Park. Funded by the North Central Baptist Association and Louisiana State Parks, This beautiful addition will serve as a gathering space for the community and visitors to Caney Lake and the state park. In addition, state park officials announce the arrival of all-terrain track wheelchairs, providing enhanced accessibility to our park trails. 


Braden Theriot selected to play in LHBCA All-Star game

Braden Theriot of Weston High School has been selected to play for the East Team in the Louisiana High School Baseball Coaches Association (LHSBCA) All-Star team. The senior standout is one of seven from north Louisiana on the 25 man team that will play a two game series at Louisiana Christian University in Pineville on May 17-18.

Theriot earned the honor after helping Weston secure the District 1B title with a 6-0 record and the #2 ranking in Division V among “non-select” schools by virtue of their 19-12 overall record against one of the strongest schedules in the state which has seen the Wolves play 21 schools from a higher classification. 

For the year, Theriot has compiled a .344 batting average and leads Weston in home runs (6) and RBI (45). He has also scored 27 runs and compiled a sparkling .925 fielding average with 20 put outs and 17 assists. 


Chatham Village Council reviews “Speed Study” within corporate limits

The Chatham Village Council met at its regular meeting on April 9, 2024, with the following present: Mayor Greg Harris, Councilmembers Toni Malone, Sue Proffer and Bernadean James. Laverne Mixon and Mike Wilson were absent.

Headlining the agenda was Craig Stephens with Emergent Enforcement Solutions who presented the results of a speed study done for the Village of Chatham. The Council discussed the results and will bring the matter up at the next regular
meeting.

In additional business, Resolution 2024-03: a resolution to declare certain property owned by the Village of Chatham to be surplus to the Village’s
needs and other related matters was adopted. A Fair Housing Proclamation
was also approved. 

The session also included council members approving the minutes of the March 13th meeting, payment of all monthly bills and accepting the financial statements as presented. 


Weston High wins again at state FFA Competition

State Champions!

Corey Tucker, Cejay Colvin, Collin Shows, and Abel McBride has led Weston High School to another FFA state competition championship, this time in Floriculture. By finishing with a score of 2046 out of a possible 2200 points, the “Fab Four” earns a 12th state title for the school and second in the last two years. 

Cory Tucker also continued his dominance by having the highest individual point total for the third consecutive year. For Colvin, Shows and McBride this state championship is the second in a row, following the Food and Science CDE title they won last year. 

The Floriculture Career Development Event (CDE) requires students to identify plants, judge flower arrangements and solve problems. Participants also demonstrate skills in flower arranging, propagation and the preparation of floral and foliage products for sale.

This four-person team event is designed to create an interest in career preparation for all current and future aspects of the floriculture industry through leadership development and hands on technical skill development using industry standards that are delivered through the agricultural education curriculum.

Teams are judged on their ability to perform an assignment similar to one routinely performed in the floriculture industry. Additionally, individual members are called up to contribute to the team’s effort by completing events such as a general floriculture examination, an identification of plant materials and equipment, a problem-solving exercise, a practicum, a job interview and a floral arrangement.

This event builds skills that are important to careers in greenhouse and field production management, garden center and floral shop management and floral design management. Students who excel show a well-rounded knowledge of horticulture, the cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants and the floral industry.

 


JHHS Band receives Golden donation

Jonesboro-Hodge High School band director Trey Porchay and Jonesboro resident Betsy Golden have a lot in common. They are both natives of Arkansas, and both have a love for JHHS and the Tiger Band.

Golden showed her support of Porchay and her late husband, Jimmy Bond Golden and children’s (Gary and Russ) alma mater this past week by donating her clarinet that she played in high school to the newly reinstated Tiger Band. 

The Tiger band would like to thank “Mrs. Betsy” for her loyal support and invite others that have old instruments to donate them as well to help the JHHS band continue to grow. 

 

 


Passing Along Something Special

Dennis “Skinny” Hallmark passed something along to me that was special. So special in fact that what I learned on that visit to Alabama with him in 1992 ignited a passion I had never felt before or since. He guided me on my first turkey hunt and when I drew a bead on a gobbler and he dropped, I was hooked just as solidly as if I had mainlined a narcotic.

For the next 20-something years, hunting wild turkeys in spring was my passion and not only did I finally learn how to do it on my own, I have had special opportunities to pass along my love for the sport to several other rookies like I was that day in Alabama.

Sarah Hebert was the first. On opening day of turkey season for youth several years later, I was asked to do for Sarah what Skinny had done for me. In other words, I was her guide for a hunt on what was then the Jackson-Bienville wildlife management area. I was privileged to call in a gobbler for this young teenager and saw in her eyes the same fire I experienced when my Alabama gobbler bit the dust.

Still later after having several successful turkey seasons under my belt, my Ruston friend, Jody Backus, asked if I would accompany him to his property to see if I could guide him to success with gobblers that inhabited his land. He was successful in downing a big gobbler.

Each episode differs in the way it plays out. When I called the gobbler in for young Sarah Hebert, it same right off the roost to the decoy we had set out. The hunt ended quickly because soon after daylight, she was packing out her first longbeard. In Backus’ case, the weather was chilly and nasty and we were on the verge of giving up when at the last minute, a big longbeard decided to make Jody’s day.

On two other occasions, I shared my know-how with a couple of other hunters who took what they had experienced when I guided them to call in and take gobblers on their own. I wasn’t there when Carla Johnson and Ross Downer got their gobblers but their success was almost as gratifying as if I had been there.

Louisiana’s turkey season opened this past Saturday and I found out about another
situation in which one hunter guided another hunter, a novice, to take their first longbeard.

My nephew, Dan Dupree, lives on Clear Lake in Natchitoches Parish with his wife,
Debbie and two offspring, daughter Rachel who will graduate from college this summer as a nurse and high school senior, Johnathan, who has been successful in killing a gobbler or two.

“I had located some turkeys on our hunting lease and had gone out and scouted to sort of get them located. When opening day came, I had planned to take my dad and guide him but he wasn’t able to go,” said Johnathan. “Rachel asked me if I would take her so rather than going out to chase gobblers on my own, I agreed.”

Rachel had been successful on her deer stand having taken a nice 9 point buck this past deer season but had never tried turkey hunting. They got to the woods early and as it began to get daylight, the gobblers began waking up and long story short, Johnathon used his turkey calls to entice a big longbeard to Rachel’s gun. She dropped the 21 pound bird with a 10 ½ inch beard at 30 yards with one shot from her 20 gauge Remington.

Her reaction? “I’m hooked; I think Johnathon has created something in me that I’m going to love” she said.

That’s the way it is, one hunter helping another experience the thrill of something that means so much to the guide and ultimately to the novice hunter. In my case, my helping Sarah and Jody and Ross and Carla to getting their first gobblers was right up there in soul satisfaction equal to the day Skinny watched me jump up and down with excitement over my first.

That’s the magic turkey hunting induces.
