Quitman High School wins LHSAA Division IV State Golf Championship

The smallest school was the best school at the 2024 Ochsner Health LHSAA Division IV State Golf Championships played on The Wetlands Golf Course in Lafayette this past Tuesday and Wednesday.

Competing against seven other Class A schools, the Class B Wolverines shot a two-day total of 645 (318-327) to finish eight strokes ahead of second place Ouachita Christian. Vermilion Catholic finished in third.

The Wolverines had three players finish in the top 15 in individual scoring to claim its fourth overall LHSAA boys state golf championship and first-ever Division IV title.

Despite suffering with a 102 degree fever, Eli Walker led the Wolverine quintet by finishing in third place individually for the second year in a row. His second day round of one-over-par, 73, was the third best round compiled over the par 72, 6348 yard course that combined with his opening round score of 69 gave him a 142 total.

Pete Simonelli, who became the only player in Jackson Parish history to hit a hole-in-one in LHSAA play when he carded an ACE in regional competition, shot a second round 79 that paired with his opening day 81 gave him a 160 total, good for 12 place overall.

Noah Leach was just three places back at 15th after rounds of 81-82 for a two day total of 163. Ian Tilley had rounds of 87-93 (180) and Hudson Pullig turned in a two day total of 213 after shaving five important strokes off his first day score.

Southwest Mississippi Community College signee, Tayt Culpepper also had a fine tournament representing Weston High School finishing in 6th place overall in individual standings after rounds of 79-75 for a 154 total.

Logan Heltz of Christ Episcopal, the defending champion and first-day leader with a five-under 67, added a two-under 70 on Wednesday – the low round of the day — and claimed the individual title with a seven-under 137 total. He finished
two strokes ahead of Riverside’s Cole Haase, who finished at 68-71—139 to finish as runner-up for the second straight year.

Quitman High Qualifies for LHSAA Division V Baseball State Tourney

SAFE!

Quitman High School head baseball coach Joe Lockhart told his team it would take a total team effort for his 5th seeded, Wolverines to beat #4 seed Stanley on their home field. Ask and you shall receive!

Every starter got a hit and all but one either scored a run or drove at least one in as Quitman waltzed their way into the Division V semi-finals with a surprisingly easy 8-1 victory. Adding to the team’s impressive effort was the focus and ability to come through in the clutch that was demonstrated personified by the fact that seven of the eight runs that QHS scored came with two outs. Talk about delivering!

“We knew what kind of team Stanley had from when we played them earlier in the year (Quitman won 5-4 in 8 innings) and what kind of effort it would take to beat them on their home field,” said Lockhart. “I am so proud of the guys for the way they stepped up both offensively and in the field.”

Sulphur Bound! With the victory, QHS qualifies for the LHSAA Division V “non-select” state tournament for the second time in the past three years. The Wolverines will now put their 17-10 record on the line against defending state champion and top ranked Pitkin, who beat Anacoco 11-2 to improve to 23-3 on the year. The semi-final contest is scheduled to be played at 11:00am on May 7th on Field 37 at McMurry Park in Sulphur, LA.

Four Score! Just like the first time, when the two north Louisiana small school powers played on March 30th, Quitman broke on top by four runs. The only difference was in the first contest it was the second inning that the Wolverines exploded, this time QHS plated four in the first frame. Hudson Pullig and Logan Ponder got the first inning started by both hitting singles. Two outs later both were still on first and second base but John Raegan Hasley came through with a single to left to give Quitman the lead. Then Wolverines got a break when a ground ball hit by Pete Simonelli to shortstop was booted to score Ponder, the first of four Stanley errors on the day. Ian Tilley then delivered a sharp single to left that plated Hasley and Simonelli.

Securing the lead! Stanley put two on with two outs as well in their half of the first but starting pitcher Ponder slammed the door on the rally attempt by executing a perfect pick off throw to shortstop, Maddox Duck, who applied the tag on the base runner at second base to end the threat.

Two More! The Wolverines added two more to the score in the top of the third thanks to crafty baserunning. Riley Duck coaxed a walk to open the inning followed by Simonelli hitting a one out single. The pair executed a double steal leading to Duck scoring when the throw was misplayed by the Stanley third baseman. Jayden Harts came in to pinch run for Simonelli and immediately made his impact felt by stealing third base. Another misplayed throw to a base upped the lead to 6-0 when after getting hit by a pitch, Braden Hobbs stole second with the throw getting away from the shortstop that allowed Harts to score.

Adding another! The Wolverines added another run to up the lead to 7-0 in the fifth inning. Pete Simonelli reached base for the third time, when his grounder to the left side of the infield forced John Raegan Hasley, who had opened the fame with a single, at second base. Once again Harts came on to run, took third on a passed ball and scored on a Hobbs single.

Final Run! The Wolverines tallied their final run in the sixth inning, which was the first time in the contest the Wolverines didn’t wait until they had two outs in an inning to score. For the sixth straight frame, QHS got their lead off batter on when Ponder singled. Kace West followed with Quitman’s only extra base hit of the game, smacking a double to left but Ponder was thrown out at home trying to score from first base. Riley Duck then followed with a single that scored West.

Duel Delivery! In regard to “delivering” the Wolverines also got a tremendous pitching performance from Ponder and Tilley. The pair who also combined to pitch Quitman past Doyline in the quarterfinals, limited Stanley to just two hits and one meaningless earned run in the final inning while striking out seven.

Logan Ponder signs with South Arkansas Community College

Virtually all his young life, Logan Ponder of Quitman High School has been recognized as a star on the baseball diamond. Now it is official!

When Ponder signed the papers on Wednesday, May 1st, in front of school administration, faculty, student body, family and friends in the QHS gymnasium, he became South Arkansas Community College Star.

“I have a lot of friends who play there” said Ponder when asked why he chose South Ark over others who wanted him at their schools. “I also really like the coach and the program.”

Ponder leads Quitman into the LHSAA Division IV state semi finals this week after compiling a .342 batting average, scoring 26 runs and collecting a team leading 16 steals while also anchoring the Wolverine pitching staff with a 5-2 record and 1.36 ERA.

LA Sports Hall of Fame Foundation set For May 7 “Give For Good” Day

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Foundation, boosting efforts to generate funds to support its museum in Natchitoches including technology upgrades at the 11-year-old facility, will participate in “Give for Good Day” to complement its fund-raising initiatives.

Under the auspices of the Community Foundation of North Louisiana (CFNL), the Tuesday, May 7 “Give for Good Day” is North Louisiana’s largest day of giving. Established in 2014 by the CFNL, “Give for Good” has raised over $19 million for non-profit entities in North Louisiana.

The event empowers the entire Northwest Louisiana community to go the extra mile for causes they care about while building awareness and support for those hard-working and worthwhile organizations. The 2023 “Give for Good Day” raised nearly $2.8 million for over 200 non-profits.

The LSHOF Foundation is focused on enhancing the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum and “Give for Good Day” is the latest in a series of initiatives.

“Any opportunity to attract support for the foundation’s mission of enhancing the Hall of Fame museum which honors Louisiana’s great sports legacy is one which we will pursue. We are in an exciting new partnership with a nationally-acclaimed company developing a multi-phase plan which will significantly raise the ‘wow factor’ at the museum,” said LSHOF CEO Ronnie Rantz of plans to bolster the facility, which opened in the Natchitoches Historic District in June 2013.

Efforts to increase development for the LSHOF have included statewide fund-raising events, an inaugural membership drive and sponsorship support for the annual Sports Hall of Fame Induction Celebration, to be held June 20-22 in Natchitoches.

The 2024 class of 12 inductees
includes New Orleans Saints icon Drew Brees, WNBA and LSU basketball standout Seimone Agustus, MMA star Daniel Cormier along with other athletes and ambassadors whose extraordinary accomplishments have earned them Hall of Fame distinction.

LSHOF Director of Business Development and Public Relations Greg Burke is familiar with annual giving days, dating to his days as athletic director for Northwestern State.

“These special giving days often inspire current supporters to give just a little bit more in support of causes for which they are passionate,” said Burke, who added that LSHOF Foundation hoped to raise $10,000 in its first “Give for Good” initiative.

“Give for Good” donations to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Foundation can be made by clicking on https://www.giveforgoodnla.org/organization/Louisiana-Sports-Hall-Of-Fame-Foundation online.

Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

He Said Always

Does anything last forever? Baby boomers remember when things were made to last; owners cared for their items. Repairs were worth the effort and cost. TV repairman made an honest living and made house calls when needed. The majority of marriage commitments lasted too. Words like always and forever really meant something.

The depths of commitments are measured by time. Vows and hearts break easily with little to do but pick up the pieces. Bitter, the heartbroken soon settle for temporary arrangements. Binding marriage covenants have been replaced with no strings attached arrangements.

We must guard our hearts against bitterness. Some things do last.

God’s commitments are forever.

I can trust the LORD to keep His promises.

JESUS will ALWAYS be with me.

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:18-20 NASB).”

He promises to be with you always.

Trust Him.

Weston High whips Lacassine to qualify for Division V state baseball tourney

Second seeded, Weston High School, beat #7 Lacassine 9-1 on Tuesday to advance to the LHSAA Division V state tournament that will be held at McMurry Park in Sulphur, LA.

The victory earns the Wolves, now 21-13 on the year, a second straight trip to the semi-finals where they will face the winner of #3 Hicks and #6 Elizabeth at 2:00 pm on May 7th. The contest is scheduled to be played on Field 37.

An error on a ground ball hit by Cole Tolar, followed by a double off the bat of Bryce Zehr and a single by Colton Blundell gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

It would be all they would need.

That is because Tait Henderson pitched the best game of his career in the playoffs.

The crafty senior limited District 6B champion Lacassine, which ends the year with a 17-11 record, to just one hit and one earned run while striking out a season best 11 batters.

The vaunted Wolves offense garnered 11 hits and coaxed 8 walks on the day and added a run in the third inning, two more in the fourth and four in the bottom of the sixth to win going away.

As has been the norm all season, there were several that contributed led by Drew Browning, who racked up three hits including a pair of doubles, drove in two and scored two. Blundell also had three hits, two RBI and scored a run, while Zehr added a pair of hits, scored three and drove in a run.

Also playing a big role was Braden Theriot who had a hit, walked three times, scored a run and knocked one in and Cooper Delaney who had a hit and two RBI. Landry Garrett scored two runs, Jacob Gill walked twice and had an RBI and Cole Tolar got a hit.
