Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

I Have Believed

[Mother covers her face with her hands.]

Her baby wonders where she went.

Peek-a-boo, I see you!

Mommy never really left; she merely covered her face.

The LORD covered Moses with His hand.

“And the Lord said to Moses, ‘This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.’ Moses said, ‘Please show me your glory.’ And he said, ‘I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. ‘But’, he said, ‘you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live. ‘And’ the Lord said, ‘Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen (Exodus 33:17-23 ESV).”

I have not seen the LORD; yet, I have believed.

“Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed (John 20:29 ESV).”

Quitman beats Top Ranked Pitkin to Advance to Division V State Finals

Hudson Pullig scored an unearned run in the first inning and Ian Tilley made it stand up as 5th seeded, Quitman High School, stunned defending LHSAA Division V state champion and #1 ranked Pitkin, 1-0, to advance to their first ever championship game in baseball.

With the victory, the Wolverines improved to 18-10 on the year while Pitkin see their season end with a 23-4 record. Quitman’s opponent in the state final contest will be #3 seed, Hicks (19-8), who also pulled an upset when they knocked off #2 Weston, 5-1, in the other semi-final contest played on Tuesday. First pitch for the championship game to be played Friday, May 10, on Field 40 at McMurry Park in Sulphur is set for 11:00am.

Ian Tilley has never purchased property in Vernon Parish. Nevertheless, he OWNS Pitkin. Or at least the Pitkin High School baseball team in the proverbial sense. In the biggest game of his sterling career, the senior did something that no other Division V school had been able to do all season – beat the Tigers.

For that matter only three schools all year had accomplished the task, a pair of 3A schools and one 5A team. All three losses coming into the semi-final matchup had been by a total of 5 runs combined. Of the 26 times that Pitkin had taken the field, on 13 occasions the Tigers had scored in double digits. That includes the last five games of the regular season and the first two playoff games. To say Tilley had a “tall task” is an understatement.

Despite the daunting challenge, QHS head coach Joe Lockhart was supremely confident with the prospect of pulling off what many had thought to be near impossible. He knew he had an “ace in the hole”. Actually it should be said an “ace on the hill”.

“What most don’t know is that the last time that Pitkin lost in the playoffs was when Ian shut them out in the 2022 quarterfinals,” reflected Lockhart. “I felt we had a great chance with him on the bump.”

Tilley was simply terrific in keeping Pitkin from scoring for what is now 14 innings in a row. What makes his performance all the more impressive is that he shut down the potent Pitkin offense without striking out a single batter. While he didn’t K a batter, he threw a lot of strikes, 42 to be exact, out of the incredibly efficient 69 pitches he threw over the course of the seven innings.

“I have watched a lot of really good pitchers over the years totally control a game but Ian’s ability to hit his spots today was the best I have ever seen,” praised Lockhart.

Ten times Tilley got the 26 Pitkin batters he faced out on the first pitch.  Only twice all game did he throw five pitches to a batter. At no time in the contest did Pitkin manage to put more than one runner on base in an inning.  Only once, in the third inning, did the Tigers manage to get a runner to third base. In the fourth frame, Pitkin have a man reach second. Other than that, Tilley allowed only three more base runners reach first, two by singles and one on the only walk he gave up all game.

It only took two pitches for Quitman to prove their intent on setting school history by reaching their first ever state championship game in baseball. Leadoff batter, Hudson Pullig, looked at a ball then hit a rope to left field that hit the fence just a few inches below the rail, coasting in to second with a double. Logan Ponder followed with another shot to left that was run down by the Pitkin fielder but deep enough for Pullig to tag and move up to third.

“I guess you could say we took a chance there,” laughed Lockhart. “Normally you don’t try to take third on a fly ball to left, but it was pretty deep and Hudson had some good wheels. As it turned out, it was a key play in the game.”

That set the stage for what turned out to be the difference in the game. It looked like Quitman was going to leave Pullig stranded at third when John Raegan Hasley hit two-out, grounder to first base that was booted allowing for Pullig to score.

“I would have never dreamed that would be the only run of the game but as it turned out that was all we needed,” said Lockhart. “When two good teams play often the difference is the one play you should make but don’t. It worked to our advantage today.”

J-HES Recognizes Retired Educators

(l-r) Renda Patterson, Irene Jones, Cheryl Burks, Darla Milstead, Mable Houston, Jackye Belton, Terry Schackleford, Dr. Mason

There is an old saying that “behind every successful individual stands a teacher whose guidance paved the way“.

It takes a special kind of person to be a teacher. They don’t do it so they will be popular. They don’t do it for the recognition. They certainly don’t do it for the money. So why does someone become a teacher?

A teacher has an undying love of seeing young people achieve. Not only in their studies but in their development as they move from an adolescent stage to teenage years and finally into adulthood.

It is the kind of desire and love that never dies.

At Jonesboro-Hodge Elementary School, there are eight individuals who deserve special recognition. They spent most of their adult life educating the youth of the area before retiring. Combined they have accumulated 231 years of classroom. Now they have come back to continue their life work and teach once again at J-HES.

“On behalf of Jonesboro-Hodge Elementary, I’d like to take a moment to recognize our Retired Educators who have returned to teach our youth,” said  Danielle Copeland, J-HES Principal. “It is not often you get this amount of overwhelming community support. Their dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed. It is very evident that they are truly here for the advancement of our students.”

Retired Educators at J-HES

Weston falls to Hicks 5-1 in Division V semi-finals

It was the classic case of if it could go wrong, it did. As result Weston High School bows out of the 2024 LHSAA Division V state baseball tournament in the semi-finals for the second year in a row, falling to #3 Hicks by a 5-1 score.

With the loss, the Wolves end the season with a 21-14 mark while Hicks improves to 18-8 and moves on to play Quitman in the state championship game on Friday, May 10th.

Four times Weston had a runner in scoring position with less than two outs but managed to put just one run on the board. That was in the sixth inning when Drew Browning led off with a double, went to third on Braden Theriot’s single and scored when Colton Blundell hit a ground ball to shortstop. In all, nine runners were left on base and twice hard line shots led to inning ending double plays.

Meanwhile Hicks took advantage of every opportunity they got. Two hits led to two runs in the top of the second inning. Three infield errors by Weston led to two more runs scored, a single run each in both the fourth and fifth innings. A wild pitch led plated Hicks final run of the contest.

It simply wasn’t the Wolves day.

Despite the disappointing loss, it doesn’t overshadow the tremendous season the Wolves had. With 21 victories on the year Weston had the second highest total of wins among all teams in their division. The defeat was the first all year to a team from the same division as Weston ended the year having won 11 of 12 games played against Division V opponents. Six times Weston beat a team from either Division I or II in a schedule that saw the Wolves play thirteen teams from the two highest classifications in the state.

Cole Tolar led the Wolves offensive attach that totaled five hits on the day, with a pair of singles and also reached on the only walk given up by Hicks pitching  Bryce Zehr also chipped in with a double. Tait Henderson was the hard luck loser, allowing only four hits and two earned runs while striking out five in five innings of work.

Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. was atop Mystic Dan at Churchill Downs, moving in the pack of thoroughbreds, aggressively watching, and with a plan.

The pair was on the inside on the second turn, just sitting there, going with the flow of things, waiting for a spot to open.

It did.

And Mystik Dan shot through it.

He’s not overly anything for a thoroughbred except athletic and smart. And he’s plenty of those.

Suddenly the crease was there and Hernandez and Mystik Dan poured themselves through it, and when they did, things went up a notch at the Shreveport home of Wayne and Kim Smith.

That was only a few days ago — the first Saturday in May, a pretty big day the horse racing world — and the feeling hasn’t left since the moment Kim and Wayne and two other couples, all close friends, saw with their own eyes and hearts that Mystik Dan, a sort of relative to them all, was going to make a legit run for the roses at the Kentucky Derby in Louisville.

Which he did. A photo finish champion. Winner’s Circle. Garland of roses.

Winner winner chicken dinner.

“We’re still on cloud nine at the Smith house,” Wayne said.

“The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” — and counting. Because Saturday, everything came up roses for Smith’s sister Sharilyn and her husband Brent, co-owners with a tiny group of partners of Mystik Dan, the Man and the Dan of the hour.

“Such a neat story,” said big brother Wayne. “(Sharilyn and Brent) own the mom; they bred her four years ago and now here we are, four years later, and they’ve got the winner of the 150th Kentucky Derby. Incredible.

“When I think about Brent and Sharilyn, just how humble they are and how genuine they are … they’re givers and for this to happen for them, it just makes me so proud of them and happy for them. At the end of the day, it couldn’t have happened to a better group (of owners).”

Sharilyn is a Captain Shreve High and Louisiana Tech business graduate (1989), a former Tech College of Business Distinguished Alumna of the Year and a valued member of the Dean’s Advisory Board. Wayne graduated just a few years earlier, and if his name sounds familiar, it’s because he was the Tech Basketball program’s leader in assists for more than 30 years, a four-year starter at point guard on teams that went to a pair of NCAA Tournaments and an NIT.

Those old competitive juices were flowing Saturday when Mystik Dan headed down the stretch, stride for stride with Sierra Leone and Forever Young. It doesn’t matter that the next time Wayne Smith gets on a horse will be the first time: competition is competition.

“Lot of excitement,” he said. “I thought about when we won at Lamar (in 1984) to end their (homecourt) win streak (at 80 straight) and win the (Southland Conference) tournament, and then Reunion Arena (a loss in the Regional Semi-Finals in 1985). I guess for Mystik Dan, it’s like winning the national championship.

“You can only dream of something like this happening, and when it does, you’re grateful knowing it couldn’t have happened to a better team,” he said. “The Smith Family didn’t have a lot when we were growing up; I was born June 29, 1964, and Sharilyn was born June 28, 1968. She was my birthday present back then.”

And now, little sis has given him another present. One that he can’t open, but one that can’t ever be closed, either.

Morgan helps Louisiana Christian University claim RRAC Championship

Conference Champions!

When Luke Morgan signed to continue his baseball career at Louisiana Christian University in Pineville, he did so because he wanted to be a part of program history.

Mission Accomplished!

Not only is the former Quitman High School, two time, all state baseball player a member of the LCU team, his contribution was invaluable to helping the Wildcats secure their first ever  Red River Athletic Conference Championship.

After finishing the regular season in 5th place with a 17-13 conference record and a 32-19 mark overall, the Wildcats slipped past LSU-Alexandria 13-12 in the first round. That set up a matchup with LSU-Shreveport, ranked 4th nationally and RRAC regular season champion in the second round.

It looked like LCU had pulled the ultimate stunner when they downed LSU-S 5-2. It marked the first time in 15 years that LCU had beaten their northwest Louisiana rivals. When they beat them again 7-6, after dropping the winners bracket final game to Texas A&M Texarkana by a 8-7 score, it was proven to be no fluke. LCU then downed TA&M-Texarkana by 6-4 and 9-7 scores to culminate the historic week and earn their first trip ever to regional playoff competition.

Morgan played a big role too. The redshirt freshman was used sparingly early in the year, mostly as a pinch runner, but through continued hard work finally moved into the starting lineup with just a couple of games left in the regular season.

Playing left field, the son of John and Tracy Morgan of Quitman was instrumental in LCU’s tournament success, collecting an RBI in the opener and going 2/3 with a run scored in the first victory against LSU-S. In the finals of the winners bracket, Morgan smashed a double and drove in a run.

In the two game final’s set, Morgan scored a run in each game, and stole two bases in the championship clincher while also getting a hit and reaching base via a walk. For the year, Morgan has compiled a sparkling .385 batting average.

JHHS Ag Dept. Completes Campus Beautification Project

J-HHS Ag Department is thrilled to announce that the landscape and design to beautify our campus has been completed. Thanks to Jonesboro State Bank Pledge 10, our students worked hard at building wood projects for this beautification and learned hands on landscaping.

Ms. Angela K. Shows taught students the effectiveness of harmonious aesthetic landscaping through the use of elements such as color, texture, line, placement, and the correct plants to transplant. Students achieved this learning as impactful, sustainable, balanced, and beautiful while giving the front campus a face lift and the Ag area more foliage with blueberries, crabapple, mayhaw, and fig trees.

Signs were placed throughout the J-HHS campus displaying various campus locations. The front of the school was landscaped with magnolia gems, arborvitaes, fan palms, purple dwarf loropetalums, miniature camellias, red and
white knock out roses, and red yucca. All these plants were enveloped with a raised bed of black mulch.

Thank you Jonesboro State Bank for allowing this endeavor! Your support and dedication for our school, students, and community is a tremendous blessings!

“Buck, Buck”

Following World War II, tension intensified between the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies, the Western Bloc (U.S.) and the Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union) in what has become known as the Cold War. It is called the Cold War because there was no large-scale fighting directly between the superpowers. The superpowers sent soldiers and spies all over the world. David was among the many uniformed soldiers sent to West Germany in the early 1950s. While there, David met and fell in love with a German girl named Marlene Henze. On March 19, 1955, Walter, their first son, was born in Idar-Oberstein in West Germany. In 1957, when David was discharged from the military, he returned home to Penns Grove, New Jersey with his new family. Together, David and Marlene had three more children. The family struggled to survive. David worked as a welder and factory worker and Marlene worked in a bank.

From an early age, Walter struggled to speak and had a severe stutter. His parents hoped his stuttering would disappear as he got older, but it continued. “I thought I was handicapped,” Walter once said. “I couldn’t talk at all.” When he went to school, the other kids picked on him because of his stuttering. The heckling only worsened when Walter entered Penn Grove High School. His classmates called him “Buck Buck” because of his stutter. As any teenager who has ever been bullied can imagine, high school was especially rough for Walter because of his stuttering. “There was a lot of bullying in my life, and I had to fight my way out.” Walter said. “Kids get mean.” Then, Walter agreed to do “some theatre” in high school. People who cared for Watler tried to dissuade him while people who liked to pick on him encouraged him to take the stage. Walter read his lines over and over until he had memorized them. He knew he would eventually have to recite his lines verbally, but he was hesitant. Finally, Walter took a deep breath and began to speak. To his astonishment, the words flowed from his lips flawlessly. He later said, “when I memorized words, I didn’t stutter, which was just miraculous.” Everyone was shocked at how well he spoke his memorized lines. His stuttering disappeared when he sang lyrics he had memorized.

Walter struggled to get a handle on his stuttering. He was elated when he took the stage in high school and spoke his memorized lines perfectly. He considered trying to become an actor, but he had no show business connections. Walter moved to New York and became a bartender at the trendy Kamikaze Club. One night, a casting director visited the Kamikaze Club. Rather than being thirsty, the casting director was visiting bars in New York looking to cast someone to play a bartender in an upcoming film. Who better to play a bartender in a film than a real bartender? The casting director had quickly dismissed other bartenders for one reason or another, but he liked what he saw in Walter. After watching Walter for a short time, the casting director decided to offer the part to Walter. In as few words as possible, Walter agreed.

From that first minuscule part, Walter got other uncredited film parts, work on stage productions, and got cast in television shows including Miami Vice. In 1980, the year he was cast in his first film, Walter was a nobody in the show business industry. Five years later, his became a household name due to another detective television show. In the last four decades, Walter has appeared in over 100 films, many of which have been box office hits. In 2022, he abruptly retired from acting.

In a cruel twist of fate, Walter’s family recently released the news that Walter has completely lost the ability to comprehend or formulate language. The actor whom you’ve just learned struggled to speak without stuttering as a child, who is now unable to speak due to a condition known as aphasia, is Walter Bruce Willis.

Jackson Parish Library recognizes Crystal Holden

Recently the Jonesboro and Chatham branches of the Jackson Parish Library participated in the statewide “Love the Boot” campaign where administration and staff members volunteered their time to help clean up their communities in the effort to “Keep Louisiana Beautiful.”

As part of their effort JPL also sponsored a contest for patrons who wished to participate by providing a special prize for the person who collected the most trash. The winner was Crystal Holden.

“Thank you, Crystal, for going above and beyond in helping clean up our community. We appreciate you!” – Floyd Knox, JPL Director.

Where have all the dads gone?

Today, we’ll once again venture off topic just a little. I have something I must get off my chest. This might be a little painful for some to read but it comes from my heart and it’s not only my perspective, but it’s the truth. I’m talking about dads. Where have all the dads gone that should be raising their own kids?

Mother Nature and the animal world understand how to raise their young to be independent and teach them to fend for themselves in the cruel animal kingdom. They are taught responsibility at an early age in order to survive and once the mother feels they are capable of going out on their own, she pushes them away or in the bird world…. out of the nest.

But let’s look at what has transpired in the last 20 years with regards to the male version of the human race, known as dads. As a dad who has raised a son and two daughters, I am aware that there are a number of men walking away from their responsibilities. They are no longer committed to raising their own kids and expect grandparents/teachers/coaches or the wife (they’ve walked out on) to raise these young kids.

A lot of the young kids today no longer have a dad’s perspective on how to deal with some of life’s tough issues. They have no idea on how to navigate the difficult day to day problems that arise. So, who are these kids turning to for advice? Well in some cases, it’s people that we don’t want giving them advice. One thing is for certain, kids will turn to whoever is willing to give the time they so desperately desire.

Kids don’t always make good choices when seeking out a male role model mainly because they are looking in the wrong places. This is where a dad is supposed to point them in the right direction. You would hope they would want to look at their own dad as the person they should be trying to emulate.

So, what is the result of this lack of guidance? First of all, it has led to a weaker generation of young boys and girls who have lost the ability to lead. It’s a generation that has little to no toughness or determination to compete in today’s brutal world. It’s a generation that has no respect for any type of authority.

Many of today’s youth have been raised in a society where everyone gets a trophy. They have no understanding of how to handle defeat or rejection when they lose a game or interview for a job. Learning how to handle rejection is a part of life and growing up. Rejection teaches us that we need to work harder in order to achieve the goals we have in life.

So many student-athletes are coming out of high school as an all-district or maybe an all-state athlete and think they should be a “starter” in their sport their first year in college. They don’t want to accept the fact they have to earn that starting position. This is also why the so-called “portal” that exists in college athletics is out of control and full of athletes that don’t want to compete for a starting position because they think they are entitled to that position due to their past success before they got to college.

So back to the question of the day: where are the dads that should be teaching many of life’s lessons? In my eyes, many have CHOSEN to walk away due to their own selfish wants or needs. They have rejected their responsibility of raising their kids to be respective and productive citizens.

If this does not change, our country will continue in a downward spiral led by people who don’t know how to lead. Step up dads and do your job! Do the job that is your responsibility! Teach your kids good work ethics and how to take defeat or rejection and turn it into something positive. Teach them that dedication and hard work are still the backbone for having success.

Till next time, be a dad and do what you were put on this earth to do…raise your kids!

“Team Tew and Tayt” take 3rd at Chris Roper Golf Tourney

(l-r) Clyde Tew Jr., Richard Tew, Ajay Tew, Tayt Culpepper

Clyde Tew Jr., Richard Tew, Ajay Tew, and Tayt Culpepper traveled to Natchitoches on Saturday, April 27th to take part in the 42nd annual Chris Roper Golf tournament. “Team Tew and Tayt” shot 15 under par, good enough for a 3rd place tie.

“We had a great time and look forward to coming back next year,” said Richard Tew.

The Chris Roper Memorial Golf Tournament is held in memory of Chris Roper, who was killed in a traffic accident over the Christmas holidays in 1982. Chris, a native of Camden, Arkansas, was a senior at Northwestern State and the top golfer on the 1981 Demon Squad.

Proceeds from the tournament are used to fund two scholarships at Northwestern State. This scholarship is given in the memory of Chris Roper. These scholarships are given to two deserving students who are Health and Human Performance majors at Northwestern. Over the years this event has generated enough money to support two scholarships that provide $1,500 per semester for the recipients.

Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

You Are Special

“Your eyes have seen my formless substance;
And in Your book were written
All the days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them (Psalm 139:16 NASB).”

Following delivery, mothers proudly cradle their newborn babies in their arms. Counting the babies fingers and toes is a common practice.

Children learn about their bodies through a nursery rhyme song.

Head Shoulders Knees and Toes (Public Domain)

“Head shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes
Head shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes and…
eyes and ears and mouth and nose
Head shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes
Feet tummies arms and chins, arms and chins
Feet tummies arms and chins, arms and chins, and…

Feet tummies arms and chins, arms and chins
Hands fingers legs and lips, legs and lips
Hands fingers legs and lips, legs and lips, and…

Hands fingers legs and lips, legs and lips.”

You are special.

Death Notices

Shirley Jean Shankles
May 28, 1939 – May 5, 2024

shanklesShirley Shankles, age 84, passed away at her home on May 5, 2024 after a period of declining health. Born on May 28, 1939 in Central Tennessee outside of Nashville, she graduated from Gordonsville High School and then joined the United States Air Force. She was honorably discharged and moved to Jackson Parish in 1960. In February of 1969 she married her husband of 55 years, Jerry Shankles. In 1972, she graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a master’s degree in English. In 1973, she started teaching at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, where she spent 35 years teaching English. She always took a special interest in each student and dedicated herself to their education.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Jerry Shankles of Jonesboro; son, Russell Hill (Michelle) of Quitman; daughter, Amanda Shankles of Jonesboro; brother, Bill Hunt (Doris) of Bay City, Michigan; grandson, Andrew Hill (Toni) of Nacogdoches, Texas; granddaughter, Emily Hill of Ruston; in-laws, Betty Wyatt of Jonesboro and Donald and Mary Shankles of Ruston; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorothy Alene Stewart
May 13, 1944 – April 29, 2024

stewartDorothy Alene Stewart went to her heavenly home on Monday, April 29, 2024, after 79 years of living graciously and abundantly. Born May 13, 1944, in a large, loving, Christian family, she lived a Godly life, always positive and joyful with a sweet smile for everyone. Known lovingly as “Butch” to her family and friends, she always asked about and helped others and saw the best in everyone. She loved to sing and harmonize in church choirs with her beautiful alto voice. Butch loved living on Caney Lake, boating, camping, and following sports through the years. She loved to travel and “take a ride” to get out and see the sites and visit with people. Her fashion sense was always “on point” as a true Southern lady, and in her younger years she enjoyed shopping with her sisters to see the latest styles. Throughout her career, she worked in business administration, and retired after 30 plus years at Napa Auto Parts in Jonesboro.

Butch is survived by her longtime, devoted and loyal friend, Fay Wainwright, of Jonesboro and her brother Loy “Junior” Stewart of West Monroe, and several nieces and nephews.
