On May 16, 2026, Jackson Parish residents will go to the polls to make their selection on several ballot items, including federal, state, and local governmental positions, the Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Millage Renewal, and state constitutional amendments. 

If you would like to skip the lines, EARLY VOTING begins on May 2nd and will run through May 9th (excluding Sunday, May 3) from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm each day. Also of note, the deadline to request an Absentee Ballot is May 12 by 4:30 p.m. (except for military and overseas voters). Both the girls’ and boys’ track teams from Quitman High School completely dominated the competition at the Class B Region 1 track and field meet, held at Quitman on Monday, April 27th, to claim the team championship.

Making a strong case for back-to-back Class B state championships, the boys team took first place in 11 of the 18 events to score 166 points and claim the regional title by 39 points over second-place Castor. Simsboro came in third with 62 points, while Doyline was fourth with 56 points, giving District 1B the top four spots. Fellow Jackson Parish representative Weston High finished in 8th place with 39 points. 

While the boys’ team’s total score was impressive, the Lady Wolverines were even more dominant. Scoring a whopping 182 points, the deep Quitman squad had 17 members make podium appearances (first, second, or third place) to far outpoint second-place Converse, who finished with 66 points. Choudrant came in third with 57 points, with Zwolle scoring 56 points to earn fourth place. Weston finished in 8th place with 39 points. 

With the top three finishers in an event qualifying, both the girls and boys teams will send a very strong contingent to Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge for the Class B state track meet that will be held on May 7th.   

 

New Jackson Parish and QHS Records

Not only did a plethora of athletes qualify for the state tournament, but several also did so while setting new school and Jackson Parish all-time record marks.

Leading the way was the Quitman High School girls 4×400 relay team of Sunni Altheimer, Megan Kelley, Kaleigh King, and Audrina Martin, whose time of 4:26.16 set a new QHS school record and ranks second all-time in Jackson Parish annals. 

Kaleigh King also moved into a tie for third place all-time in the Pole Vault with an 8’6″ mark and also set a new QHS school record in the 100-meter hurdles at 17.42 seconds.

In a rare “double dip” in the same event at the same meet on new all time local records, Josiah Ramsey moved into 3rd place all time in Jackson Parish and set a new QHS record with his 10:24.16 time in the 3200 meters, while Mason Thomas, now is in 5th place all time in Jackson Parish with a time of 10:31.83 after the pair finished first and second in the regional meet. 

Asher Shultz moved into 4th place all-time in Jackson Parish with his new personal best of 175’7″ in the javelin, Gage Horton now has the 8th fastest time in the 400 meters in Jackson Parish history at 52.04 seconds, and Brayden Smith is the new QHS record holder in the 200 meters with a time of 23.05 seconds.

Teyton Naron is now in 9th place all-time in Jackson Parish after her time of 14:52.92, and Audrina Martin moved into 10th place all-time in Jackson Parish history in the 800 meters with her new personal record time of 2:42.54.

Weston Has Three Qualifies for State Meet

Weston High School had three athletes qualify for the state meet, including one who will compete in two events. Gracie Gray earned the right to compete at state after finishing second in the 300 meter hurdles and third in the 100 meter hurdles, by setting a new school record time of 18.13 seconds. Rachel Bandy also will head to state in the Javelin with a throw of 113’1″, which is also good for 8th place all time in Jackson Parish history. The final state qualifier is Kayden Smith in the long jump after placing third with a mark of 19’4″.

Three games in three days. That is what is on tap for Quitman and Weston High Schools, both trying to move another step closer to a Class B state title. Both Quitman and Weston’s baseball teams will be playing at home, hosting regional round playoff games, while the Quitman softball team is back at their home-away-from-home, at the site of the LHSAA state softball tournament, Frasch Sports Complex in Sulphur, LA.

Wednesday, April 29th
6:00 pm

The action begins at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, April 29th, when Quitman hosts Stanley in a Class B regional baseball game. The #7 seed Wolverines, which finished second in District 1B, enter with a 17-14 record, while the #10 seed Stanley, the District 3B champion, has a 19-10 mark.

Both teams drew first-round byes, and both are looking to break losing streaks with Quitman having dropped their last three of the regular season and Stanley, even worse, having lost their last four.  

Kace West leads the offensive attack with a .433 batting average and a team-leading 13 doubles and 24 RBI. Maddox Duck is next at .407, and a team best 35 runs scored, while Hudson Pullig is hitting at a .319 clip with the most home runs and triples. 

The pitching staff is basically handled by three hurlers, with West having started 10 games and both Pullig and Zach Smudricks starting 7 games each. All three have fine ERA averages with Smudricks sitting at 2.710, Pullig at 2.725, and West at 2.982, with the trio combining for 189 strikeouts.

The Class B baseball playoff scene shifts slightly east but remains in Jackson Parish when #4 seed Weston, with a 21-12 record, welcomes #13 Anacoco to Mike Staples Field for the first playoff game in several years to be played on the WHS campus on Friday, April 30th. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm.

The District 1B champion Wolves drew a first-round bye, while Anacoco, the third-place finisher in District 4B with a 14-10 overall record, moved into the second round by beating #20 Avoyelles Public Charter 18-8 in the opening round. 

 A strong offensive juggernaut with seven starters hitting .300 or better and holding a .297 team batting average, the Wolves enter averaging a little over 8 runs per game. Colton Blundell, who missed several games late due to a knee injury but is now back, leads WHS with a .407 average and in triples. Drew Browning has the most prolific stats, having earned the distinction of being in the 40-40 club with 42 runs scored and 40 RBI. The South Arkansas CC commit also leads the team with 16 doubles and 4 homeruns, and has the second-highest batting average at .396 on the year. Ty Henderson (.375) and Jase Borders (.294) both have scored 30 runs this season, while Liam Weaver is hitting .307 and has 23 runs scored and 22 RBI. Browning and Henderson have both made 7 starts on the mound, with Jase Borders just one behind.

Having made the “Dash to Frasch,” the two-time defending state champion Lady Wolverines, seeded #2 after having navigated through one of the toughest schedules in the LHSAA to earn a 23-9 record, play #3 seed Hicks in the semi-finals of Class B.  While the Frasch sports complex in Sulphur, LA is like a home-away-from-home for Quitman, being that this is the fourth year in a row that the Lady Wolverines have made the state tournament, it is the first time that Hicks, who has an impressive 20-3 record, has ever played at the home of LHSAA state softball championships.

With an incredible .363 team batting average that has eight starters sporting a batting average of .300 or better, the Lady Wolverines feature perhaps the most prolific offensive weapon in LHSAA history in Maggie Guyotte. The Louisiana Tech University signee is the LHSAA all-time leader in hits with 304 for her career, which ranks #7 in the nation, while also leading the state in career RBI’s with 275, good for 5th all-time in the entire nation. Her 74 career home runs are also the second-best mark ever in Louisiana. Guyotte leads QHS this season with a stellar .505 batting average, 16 home runs, 52 RBI, and 43 runs scored. 

Also having an incredible season is Hallie Kate Pullig, who checks in with a .444 batting average and is second on the team in home runs (8), RBI (43), and runs scored (35). Kinsley Ponder and Anna Claire Leach are both just a step behind in batting average with .433 and .415 marks, followed by Brenna Lamkin, who is the odds-on favorite for the “newcomer of the year” award. A true dual threat, the Sophomore is hitting .378, has 6 home runs with 33 RBI, and 19 runs scored. While impressive in its own right, her greatest contribution has been in the circle where she has thrown 145 innings to accumulate a 15-7 record, while striking out an even 200 batters against many of the best teams in the state from all classifications.

Please vote Yes for Constitutional Amendment 5 on the ballot for May 16. The amendment raises the age of retirement for Judges in Louisiana to 75 years, from the current 70-year retirement mandate. The reasons are simple.

• The voters are best suited to decide if a candidate should continue to serve.
• Experienced, highly qualified Judges are being forced into retirement.
• People are living longer productive lives and working longer.
• No other political office has a mandatory retirement age.
• By Supreme Court oversight, incompetent Judges can already be removed.

While the amendment does not put an end to what can only be called age bias, it does soften its effect. Voting Yes to raise the age is simply the right thing to do. In this election cycle alone, some 60 Judges of the approximately 360 in the State are being forced to retire. While some are doing so voluntarily, many others have an earnest desire to continue to serve the people of this great state. They should have the opportunity to do so, and it should be up to the voters to decide if they can continue, not some arbitrary age limit.

NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State athletic department and Rhodes Properties and Development have partnered to create a unique opportunity for fans and supporters of Demon athletics.

The two entities have combined to present the 2026 Rhodes Properties and Development Demon Dream Home giveaway – a raffle that will see the winner collect a brand-new Rhodes-built home in the Hidden Oak subdivision in Natchitoches, located along Louisiana Highway 3191.

Raffle tickets will be sold for $100 each beginning May 4 and can be purchased through Northwestern athletes or online through www.NSUDemons.com. The live drawing will take place Nov. 6 at Riverside Reserve in Natchitoches with additional prizes awarded at the event.

Proceeds from the raffle will go toward the Northwestern athletic department in support of its student-athletes.

“Working hand-in-hand with Rhodes Properties and Development to bring the Demon Dream Home to life was an easy decision,” Director of Athletics Kevin Bostian said. “Their support of Northwestern State athletics never has been in question, but it has reached another level with this partnership. The home, valued at $265,000, is a three-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,450-square foot heated building in one of Natchitoches’ newest subdivisions that Rhodes Properties and Development and Rhodes Realty began developing in early 2026. Hidden Oak subdivision is located near Sibley Lake, west of Louisiana Highway 1 in Natchitoches.

Each Wednesday, one of the JPSD faculty members is recognized for their tremendous commitment, dedication, and excellence in the classroom, which helps our local youth prepare for their future endeavors. This week, Noelle Otwell, a 1st Grade Teacher at Weston High School, is honored as “Staff Standout.”

With 10 years in education, all proudly spent serving in Jackson Parish, Noelle brings consistency and high expectations to her classroom each day, helping students build strong academic foundations during one of the most important years of their education.

Her impact is clearly reflected in her students’ success. Noelle’s classes consistently show tremendous growth on the DIBELS assessment, with scores that are truly top-notch—evidence of her commitment to student achievement and growth.

Noelle credits her 4th-grade teacher, Mrs. Spence, as someone who made a lasting impact by creating a welcoming and encouraging classroom that helped her rediscover her love for school. Outside of the classroom, Noelle enjoys reading, playing volleyball, and spending time with her family and friends.

Responsible fiscal management is essential to maintaining a professional and effective Sheriff’s Office. Every dollar entrusted to this office represents the hard work of the citizens of Jackson Parish and must be managed with discipline, transparency, and long-term responsibility.

When I was appointed Sheriff, the office was already operating under an established budget that included existing pay structures, equipment obligations, operational contracts, and ongoing financial commitments. These structures were established under the direction of the previous Sheriff and require careful review and planning through the established budget process before large adjustments can be made. The Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office will be operating under this budget until June 30, 2026.

Since assuming this responsibility, expenditures and operational costs have been reviewed to identify areas where operations can be streamlined and efficiencies improved. In some cases, adjustments were made immediately where improvements could be implemented without disrupting operations. Other areas require additional evaluation as a broader plan continues to take shape to better align resources, personnel, and operational priorities.

Operating a Sheriff’s Office requires substantial resources. Patrol vehicles must be maintained and replaced to remain safe and reliable for deputies working throughout the parish. Equipment, communications systems, technology platforms, and investigative tools require ongoing maintenance and replacement.

Personnel represent the largest investment in public safety. Recruiting and retaining qualified deputies, detention officers, dispatchers, and supervisors requires competitive pay, benefits, and insurance coverage necessary to retain experienced personnel serving the citizens of Jackson Parish.

The Jackson Parish Jail contributes to the financial structure of the Sheriff’s Office. Housing inmates from other jurisdictions helps offset operational costs, makes full use of existing infrastructure, and supports additional employment opportunities. Jail operations must be carefully managed to ensure continuity of operations, compliance with government standards, and facility security.

Fiscal decisions directly affect public safety. Personnel levels, training, equipment, and operational readiness determine how effectively deputies and staff respond when citizens need help. When agencies operate with reduced staffing and limited resources, the result is increased strain on personnel, reduced patrol coverage, and longer response times.

My responsibility as Sheriff is to ensure this does not happen in Jackson Parish. Careful stewardship of public funds and disciplined budgeting allow this office to maintain the personnel, equipment, and operational readiness necessary to protect and serve our community.

The role of Clerk of Court is one of the most meticulous, organized, and process-driven positions that exist in local government. It leaves little room for error, focuses completely on time-sensitive procedures, and gives the greatest care to the most sensitive and important records of parish citizens.

The most valuable trait that I am prepared to bring to the Clerk of Court office is a fresh perspective backed by a record of both public and private sector professional experience. While my experience in the legal and political realms is, admittedly, limited, I consider that a bonus, not a hindrance. The Clerk of Court office is first and foremost an agency built around efficiency, organization, management, and public trust – all of
which I proudly bring from my prior work experience. Rather than running an office the way it has always been run, I offer the opportunity to enhance current processes, refresh and revolutionize operating procedures, and boost engagement with the public for the records that the Clerk’s office maintains.

Our community deserves a Clerk of Court’s office that operates with the highest level of professionalism, modern efficiency, and unwavering transparency. Recently, there has been much discussion regarding the “right kind” of experience needed for this role. I believe experience is not just about how long you’ve sat behind a specific desk – it is about what you’ve accomplished, how you’ve managed resources, and the integrity you bring to the job. My campaign is not built around a lack of specific experience – it is founded on ideas that are unburdened by old habits and standards.

I am proud to bring a combination of public and private experience that clearly displays the skills needed to run the Clerk’s office.

Accuracy and Protection of Public Records
In my current role overseeing administration and payroll, I manage the operations of a dedicated team that supports one of the largest employers in Jackson Parish. Through that work, I handle some of the most sensitive and confidential information belonging to our neighbors, friends, and families. Protecting that information isn’t just part of the job, it’s a legal and moral responsibility. Every day, I work with private financial data, social
security numbers, and compliance requirements that demand precision, accountability, and trust. My role requires a zero-error mindset when managing contracts, documentation, and regulatory processes. That same level of care is exactly what the Clerk’s Office requires. From land deeds to marriage licenses to court filings, these records matter. They must be accurate, protected, and handled with integrity. And that’s
the standard I will bring to this office.

Efficiency and Accountability for the Legal System
Organization is the backbone of my career. Managing administration, billing, and payroll of a dedicated team that supports one of the largest employers in Jackson Parish
requires constant coordination and the ability to keep multiple moving parts aligned under pressure. The Clerk of Court’s office is a working office—but at its core, it is an administrative and management function within our legal system. You do not need a legal degree to run it, you need an expert in records, data, and management. It requires strong oversight of records, processes, and daily operations to ensure everything runs efficiently and accurately. I know how to streamline workflows, prevent bottlenecks, and keep teams and processes moving forward smoothly. I will bring that same focus and efficiency to the Clerk of Court’s office ensuring the legal system moves forward without unnecessary delays, that all parties are kept informed in accordance with the law, and that every responsibility of the Clerk’s office is carried out with diligence and the highest
level of care.

Keeping Public Records Public
As a former department head in municipal government, I have been directly accountable to the public and the taxpayers. I understand the importance of open communication and fiscal responsibility. My collegiate education provided me with a
foundation in critical thinking and research, but my time in public service taught me that transparency is earned through consistent, honest action. I am committed to an open-door policy, where the citizens of Jackson Parish feel seen, heard, and respected. The records in the Clerk’s office are your records, and they should be easy to file and even easier to access.

I have learned that leadership is nothing without accountability. Whether I am managing a public department or overseeing the administration and payroll for our parish’s largest
industry, I am answerable to the people I serve. I am committed to a Clerk’s office that is transparent, user-friendly, and open to every citizen of Jackson Parish.

The Clerk of Court is, above all, an administrative manager and leader. My professional background and college degree have prepared me to manage budgets, lead teams, and implement modern solutions to old problems. I am not just looking to maintain the status quo – I am looking to improve the way this office serves you, the public.

The trust I’ve been given to help manage operations that support local families’ livelihoods is something I take seriously, and I hope to earn that same trust in protecting the records that preserve the history and future of Jackson Parish.

I am a daughter of Jackson Parish, and I am deeply invested in our home. I am not a career politician. I am a professional who understands that the Clerk of Court is an administrative role that requires a leader who is accurate, organized, responsible, and
deeply rooted in this community.

Olivia “Livi” Otwell from Weston High School continues to make school history. After becoming the first player from WHS to qualify for the LHSAA state tennis tournament last spring, Otwell has once again earned the right to be one of 32 players to compete for the Division IV singles title. 

The outstanding senior was matched up against Amelia Dailey of Vermilion Catholic in the first round of the tournament that was played on Monday, April 27th at Forsythe Park in Monroe, LA. In what turned out to be one of the most competitive matches of the 16 played in the opening round, Otwell played gamely but fell by a score of 6-4 and 6-3 in the two sets played.

For the past six weeks, the tremendously creative children in the Jackson Parish Library (JPL) Art Class, which meets every Tuesday at 4:00 pm in the Multi Purpose Room of the Main Branch in Jonesboro under the direction of Joanna Gibson, have been building “junkbots” to celebrate Earth Day. 

As part of the project and in promotion of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library—a partnership with Pine Belt Multi-Purpose and JSB Pledge 10—the class built a life-size Dolly Parton “junkbot,” using popped balloons from the JPL Easter program to create her “Coat of Many Colors.”

“My goal was to teach them about reusing, repurposing, and recycling,” said Ms. Gibson. “The recognition of Earth Day was a perfect opportunity to reflect, educate, and inspire the youth to find creative ways to reuse items.”

As a result of a project made possible through an agreement between the Jackson Parish Watershed Commission and the Jimmie Davis State Park, a new kayak launch site is available on Caney Lake, located at the east boat launch site. 

Whether you are a beginner or skilled kayaker, you will find this launch to be extremely user-friendly. The park has kayaks for rent, or you can bring your own.

“I would like to personally thank the park staff and watershed commission members for making this happen for public use,” said Jackson Parish Watershed Commission President Gary Joynor. “I also thank Mr. Thurston Allen and the Jonesboro State Bank Pledge 10 committee for fully funding this project.”

On Friday, April 24, Jonesboro-Hodge Elementary School (J-HES) hosted a LEAP Pep Rally for students in Grades 3-5 to get them pumped up for testing!

The spirit-filled event included local pastors, officials, and guest speakers who offered prayers and words of encouragement to the youth. It also included a special presentation from Mr. James Bradford on behalf of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a J-HES Cheerleading Squad performance. Last but certainly not least, all 2025 LEAP Mastery Recipients were recognized. Every student left with a goody bag and a test-taking tips sheet.

Reece Johnson, representing Quitman High School 4-H, was named the Champion Junior Division Record Book winner at the third annual Northwest District Pen of 3 Commercial Heifer Show and Sale. His pen of home-raised replacement heifers was then sold at a special 4-H sale before the start of the regular sale at the Red River Livestock Auction in Coushatta, LA. 

In attendance at the sale, serving as a State Livestock Ambassador was Gracie Bourgeois of Grace Christian Academy in Jonesboro, as well as Jess Potts from Quitman High School and Noah Lewis (Homeschool), who are up-and-coming livestock club members.

The event allows 4-H youth throughout the northwest region of Louisiana to participate in a livestock project other than the traditional show-ring cattle projects and to get a firsthand look at all the workings of a livestock auction, from unloading to bidding.

Youth also learn how to properly care for livestock and keep records on feed costs, veterinary expenses, etc., through completing a detailed record book.

Peace River K9 Search and Rescue is a non-profit corporation located in Englewood, Florida, dedicated to providing a professional highly trained search and rescue team for the rapid, effective, and safe return of lost or missing persons. PRSR uses every tool available to them to find people including but not limited to human searchers, tracking dogs, boats, jet skis, helicopters, remote control airplanes, and drones.

Since 2016, Michael Hadsell has worked as a forensic diver for PRSR. When not on a rescue mission, Michael trains dogs how to sniff out humans. Michael and the other K-9 searchers know that the major drawback for searches with dogs is that they lose the scent trail at the water’s edge. From there, search and rescue divers don scuba equipment and continue the underwater search by sight and, in murky water, by feel. Then, Michael began training a four-month-old pup named Splash. As the name implies, Splash loves the water. He seems to feel most comfortable when in the water.

Unlike the other dogs used by the PRSR, Splash’s unique senses allow him to, as Michael described it, “‘taste’ the bubbles in the water for a human scent.” Splash spent about three months on scent training following months of conditioning and other training such as deployments from land and boat, and with Michael in the water and with Michael remaining on land.

When Michael and his team begin a search, they use their K-9 dogs to track a scent to the water’s edge. Once a dog alerts on a spot, Michael unleashes Splash at that location. Splash swims around, blows bubbles, and then tastes the bubbles. He continues this bubble tasting routine always in search of a stronger scent which can lead him to the source, usually the remains of a missing person. Once he finds the source, he alerts by making a squeaking sound. Then, he leads divers to the location.

As of February of 2026, Splash has been deployed on 27 missions nationwide and has had six confirmed finds. Now two years old, Splash has grown from a pup to an adult dog, but he is different than the dogs you and I keep as pets. This dog named Splash is a full grown Asian small-clawed otter.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that, beginning Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the LA 148 bridge over the Cypress Bayou Tributary in Jackson Parish will be closed for replacement.

This bridge is located approximately 1.0 mile east of the intersection with US 167 (see included map).

The closure is anticipated to last approximately four (4) months, with progress dependent on weather conditions and other factors that may impact construction timelines.

DOTD is sending out this notification on behalf of the Office of Louisiana Highway Construction (OLHC), which is managing construction activities for this project, H.016494 DIST04/05 BRIDGE BUNDLE SFY25-26.

Restrictions/Permits: Total road closure at the specified location. All vehicles will need to utilize an alternate route.

Alternate Route: Appropriate detour signage will be in place.

This work will be performed WEATHER PERMITTING.
