BACK TO SCHOOL! Caution urged in School Zones and near Buses

On Wednesday, August 14th, classes begin at the schools of the Jackson Parish School District. As result, there will be a tremendous amount of drivers on the road and youth moving about, especially before ( 6:30 – 8:00 am) and after school (3:00 – 4:30 pm).

The Louisiana State Police (LSP) and local law enforcement officials encourage residents to drive safely in school zones, near school buses and when transporting children. It is important to follow posted speed limits and be ready for instant stops as a young person could suddenly enter the roadway.

“All motorists must remain vigilant and adhere to the rules of the road to safeguard the well-being of drivers and our young students,” – Louisiana State Police

Drivers should also be aware of abiding by posted Hands-Free Zones in school zones. These zones forbid all drivers from using their cell phones to make calls, send texts, or access social media platforms.

Extra care is also needed when encountering a school bus. When proceeding toward a school bus with red flashing lights, a driver must come to a complete stop at least 30 feet away from the bus and not move until the bus stop arm is retracted and the bus resumes motion.
