Tourney Time! Weston girls get most out of weekend play

The 2024-25 LHSAA prep basketball season has begun for “small schools” and with it is the usual tournament schedule that is always prevalent early in the season. This past weekend Weston and Quitman High Schools both took part in round robin styled tourney’s with Quitman participating in the Choudrant Tourney and Weston taking part in the Dodson Invitational. 

It was the Lady Wolves of Weston that came away from the action in the best shape having won both of their contests as on Thursday Weston beat Calvin and followed that up with a win over Castor High on Friday.  The Quitman girls team split their two games, beating Zwolle on Thursday and falling to Gibsland-Coleman on Friday while the boys teams from both lost both of their games. played. 

Thursday, November 7th

Weston 70 Calvin 53 (Girls): The Lady Wolves came out of the break on fire to outscore Calvin 41-21 in the second half to win their first of the year. Briley Peterson recorded her first “double-double” of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds  while both Anslee Aldy and  Carly Jo Griffin reached double figures in points with 17 and 14 respectively. Nadia Siadek scored seven, Raelynn Shell added six and Jakayla Fourd tallied two. Carilynn Waters and Gracie Gray both made a free throw as well. 

Calvin 59 Weston 56 (boys): Calvin led 23-6 after the first period of play but the Wolves made a determined rally to almost catch up. Nathin Wages led the Wolves with 18 points followed by Bryce Zehr with 14 and Brody Tidwell who added 10. Daniel Williams scored 8 and pulled down 9 boards and Lajavion Harris finished with five. Dawson Clifton chipped in with a free throw as well. 

Quitman 57 Zwolle 38 (Girls): Cali Deal hit 10 of 14 shots from the field and made 11 of 13 free throws to post 31 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds to lift Quitman.  Anna Leach also reached “double figures” with 10 points. Emma Walker scored 7 and pulled down 9 boards while Jaleigh Burns finished with four. Allie Robertson tallied three and Taylor Borland hit a basket to round out the scoring.

Zwolle 65 Quitman 63 (boys): A late rally fell just short as Quitman clawed their way back from a 50-37 deficit in the fourth quarter to almost catch the perineal Class B power. Four players hit double figures for the Wolverines led by 17 points each from Brayden Martin and Noah Leach. Gavyn Caskey and Brayden Smith added 14 and 11 points  as the four scored all but the four points added by Abel Leach. 

Friday, November 8th

Weston 49 Castor 44 (girls) The Lady Wolves overcame a poor shooting night by both teams by dominating on the glass to the tune of 41 rebounds. Weston made only 17 of 63 field goals (27%) and was 3 of 28 from behind the arc (11%) but with Briley Peterson pulling down 8 boards, Anslee Aldy and Carly Jo Griffin snaring 7 caroms each and Nadia Siadek securing 6 off the glass, Weston won their second straight. Aldy led in scoring with 15 points with Griffin and Peterson also reaching double figures in scoring with 13 and 11 each. Carlynn Waters finished with five, Rachel Bandy got her first three points of the year and Siadek made a basket to round out the scoring. 

Castor 67 Weston 59 (boys): A 22-11 second quarter deficit was too much to overcome despite 22 points from Nathin Wages and 20 more by Bryce Zehr.  Daniel Williams, who had a monster game on the boards with 16 rebounds, and Lajavion Harris added six points each while Abram Toms got his first three points of the year and Brody Tidwell made a basket as well. 

Gibsland-Coleman 45 Quitman 34 (girls): Playing without leading scorer Cali Deal, the Lady Wolverines managed only one point in the second quarter and just nine the entire first half to lose their first of the year after opening with three straight wins. Anna Leach scored 17 points, to lead Quitman in scoring and Jaleigh Burns added six. Emma Walker finished with five, Annie Mobley added three and Kinsley Ponder got her first two points of the year.

Gibsland-Coleman 66 Quitman 57 (boys): Larson and Taden Thomas reached new season highs in scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively but Class C power Gibsland-Coleman proved to be to strong as Quitman fell for the second straight night. Noah Leach led the Wolverines with 12 points while Brayden Smith scored six and pulled down 9 rebounds. Abel Leach and Brayden Martin finished with five each , Gavyn Caskey had four and both Asher Shultz and Amaurion Thompson tallied two. 

Upcoming Games

Weston will be at home for their Tuesday evening contest, playing host to Family Community Christian School out of Winnsboro on November 12th. Quitman will be on the road but close by as they make the short trip to Saline for junior varsity and varsity contests. Tip off for the first game at both locations is set for 5:00 pm.
