Hanging of the Greens

Many churches begin the Christmas season with hanging of the greens services. Worshipers hang ornaments on a Christmas tree as they explain a spiritual significance of each. Evergreen tree branches are draped along choir loft banisters in recognition of the everlasting life Jesus offers.

Do you have favorite tree ornaments? If so, it could be because of sentimental value…

Teary-eyed, a wife hangs a tarnished ornament from the couple’s first Christmas. Her heart flutters as she lifts another from her ornaments box. It’s one she purchased for their baby daughter’s first Christmas.

Can we set a financial value to such keepsakes?

I’ve never stepped inside Tiffany’s but they might feature exquisite holiday ornaments. The wealthy could hang a 24 carat gold star atop their trees.

Few will celebrate this Christmas with ornaments of gold; yet, we’re blessed beyond measure through the Christ Child of the manger.

“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:7 KJV).”

Cradle to cross; we worship Christ.

He was without sin and yet they hung Jesus on a tree.

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree (Galatians 3:13 KJV).”
