
The boys basketball team from Quitman High School proved to be the “host with the most” as they won both games played in the Quitman Tournament this Thursday thru Saturday. With the victories, the Wolverines ran their area best winning streak to 8 games to improve to 9-2 on the year. In other action involving Jackson Parish teams, the girls teams from both Quitman (7-5) and Jonesboro-Hodge (3-5) split a pair of games while the JHHS boys (1-5) lost their only game played.
Boys Games
Quitman 72 Calvin 29 (Friday) – Host Quitman spotted Calvin a 5-2 lead and then went on a 20-3 run to blow past their neighboring parish foe in the Wolverines opening game of the Quitman Tourney. Brayden Martin and Noah Leach tied for scoring honors with 16 points each while Taden Thomas contributed a season best 12 points. Brayden Smith also reached double digits in scoring with 10 and Abel Leach added eight points. Shane Reed scored 4, while Amaurion Thompson, Grant Williams and Case Sims all tallied two points.
Quitman 70 Northwood-Shreve 61 (Saturday) The Wolverines opened up a 20 point lead after three quarters to beat their second Class 5A school in as many tries this season. It was a total team effort as a season best five players reached double figures in points scored led by 16 each from Brayden Smith and Gavyn Caskey. Noah Leach scored 13, Brayden Martin had 11 and Taden Thomas finished with 10.
Cedar Creek 59 JHHS 43 (Friday) – JHHS trailed Cedar Creek by 28-27 at the half but the Cougars held the Tigers to just 16 second half points to pull away with the victory. Cannon Robbins scored a game high 27 points to lead Cedar Creek in scoring. No individual stats for JHHS was presented.
Girls Games
Quitman 40 Northwood-Shreve 37 (Saturday) – The Lady Wolverines outscored their Class 5A foes 5-2 in a defensive minded fourth quarter to take the hard fought victory in their final game of the Quitman Tourney. Cali Deal and Anna Leach did most of the damage by scoring 16 and 14 points respectively while Emma Walker and Jaliegh Burns scored 3 each and both Hallie Kate Pullig and Taylor Borland tallied two points apiece.
JHHS 43 Choudrant 36 (Friday) – Tyya Davis scored 13 and Nesha Johnson added 9 to help lift the Lady Tigers to the victory in their tourney opener. Sanaa Tatum chipped in with 7, LeRonda McGuire added 6 and Morgan McGee finished with five points. Jalenya Jackson also scored two points to round out the scoring.
Calvin 46 Quitman 45 (Saturday) – Emma Walker, who finished with 9 points, made two clutch free throws to give Quitman a 45-43 lead but Calvin came back to hit a three point dagger to steal the victory and win their second game of the tourney. The loss overshadowed a great night by Cali Deal who hit 8 of 12 shots and 6 of 8 free throws to finish with 22 points. Anna Leach scored 6 and Taylor Borland finished with four.
Calvin 54 JHHS 24 (Friday) – The Lady Cougars opened the tourney by holding JHHS to single digits in each of the four quarters to take the easy victory. Sanaa Tatum scored half of the Lady Tigers points with 12 followed by 7 by Morgan McGee. Tyya Davis scored 3 and Nesha Johnson finished with two.
