Quitman starts defense of state championship by winning first three

Quitman High School has started off defense of their 2024 Division V girls softball state championship in fine style by winning their first three games of the 2025 season at the Stanley Tournament this Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Wolverines opened the year by besting tournament host Stanley 11-6 in 8 innings and then followed that up by taking down St. Mary’s of Natchitoches 5-3 and Class 5A Captain Shreve 16-0.

QHS 11 Stanley 6: The Lady Wolverines scored five times in the top of the 8th inning to complete rallies from a 3-0 and 5-3 deficits to win the season opener. Brenna Lamkin, who had 5 RBI on the day, provided the big blast in the extra frame with her second double of the game that scored three runs after Hallie Kate Pullig and Kinsley Ponder hit singles and both Zoee Williams and Briley Bowers, who scored 3 runs and had 3 RBI, drew walks. Anna Leach then followed with with a single for the final run. LSU signee and defending Division V MVP, Cali Deal picked right up where she left off last year to earn the win after striking out 9 in five innings of relief.

Quitman 5 St. Mary’s 3: Once again the Lady Wolverines came from behind twice to get the victory. Zoee Williams hit her second single of the game that scored Hallie Kate Pullig who had opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a double, to put QHS up 4-3 and then Briley Bowers hit a sacrifice grounder that scored Karley Huckaby who had singled as well. The Lady Wolverines had tied the scored at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Louisiana Tech signee, Maggie Guyotte hit a single that scored Bowers. Early on Quitman trailed 2-0 before Williams connected for her first hit that scored Huckaby and Kinsley Ponder who had rapped out base hits before her. Cali Deal picked up her second win in as many games by limiting St. Mary’s to just four hits and striking out 9 in a complete game, seven inning effort.

Quitman 16 Captain Shreve 0: Maggie Guyotte allowed just one hit in three innings of work and Quitman exploded for an early season best 16 runs in the victory over the Class 5A opponent. Zoee Williams continued her early season outburst with three hits that included a pair of doubles and four RBI, while Anna Leach also rapped out three hits, scored three runs, stole two bases and drove in a run. Hallie Kate Pullig also came up big with two hits, including a double, driving in five runs and scoring three times while Kinsley Ponder also doubled and singled from her leadoff position. Additional offensive contributors with a hit were: Maggie Guyotte (2 RS, RBI), Cali Deal (2 RS, RBI, SB), and Karley Huckaby (2 RS, 2 RBI, SB). Avery Watson also scored three times as a pinch runner.
