Weston Softball heats up for three wins at Polar Bear Classic

Weston High School beat a pair of Division I schools and a top rated school from Arkansas at the prestigious Polar Bear Classic in Monroe on Friday and Saturday to open the season with three wins for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

It was the best offensive explosion to open a season in head coach Cecilia Chamblee’s third season at the helm that led to the impressive victories as Weston beat Neville 10-9 on Friday and followed that up with an 8-5 victory over Ruston and a 15-10 win over Hamburg, AR on Saturday.

“The girls are working together perfectly and are hungry for more wins,” said Chamblee. “We are excited about the season ahead and we’re going to continue working hard to get better.”

Weston 10 Neville 9: Down 9-6 entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the Lady Wolves scored four times for the victory when Carlynn Waters hit a double that scored Penelope Ferguson and Hailey Chatham to complete the rally. Davynee Bearden and Anslee Aldy had walked prior and scored for the first two runs of the innings. It was the second time Weston has rallied from a large deficit in the game as after trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the 5th inning the Lady Wolves had five consecutive batters reach base that included a Rachel Bandy two run homer and a double by Aldy. Carly Jo Griffin and Jaylin Williams also drew walks and Bearden added a single.

Weston 8 Ruston 5- A three run second inning and five more scored in the third led to the second straight victory over a District 2-5A team. The Lady Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to shoddy Ruston defense as Carly Jo Griffin opened with a single and took second on an error of a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jaylin Williams. Griffin scored on a dropped third strike that saw Davynee Bearden reach first base and then Williams scored on a second error of the inning by the Ruston pitcher. Anslee Aldy then sacrificed in Bearden. Weston blew the game open with five in the next inning on the strength of doubles by Rachel Bandy, Griffin and Hailey Chatham along with walks to Williams and Penelope Ferguson and Bearden reaching on another Ruston error. Bandy allowed just five hits and struck out 10 in 7 innings for her second win in two starts.

Weston 15 Hamburg, AR 10 – The Lady Wolves scored six runs over the final three innings to break a 9-9 tie and win their third straight at the Polar Bear Classic. The Lady Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead when Davynee Bearden walked, Jaylin Williams got hit by a pitch and the Rachel Bandy and Carly Jo Griffin hit back to back doubles. Hailey Chatham then followed with a single. The lead went to 7-0 the next inning when Anslee Aldy walked, Penelope Ferguson reached on an error, Beardon doubled and Williams walked. Single runs in the third and fourth innings made it 9-0 before Hamburg exploded for 9 runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score. Weston regained the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth inning when Molly Beaubouef walked and both Aldy and Ferguson singled to load the bases. A fielders choice by Waters and a sac bunt by Bearden scored two followed by walks to Williams and Bandy and an error on a ball hit by Griffin plated two more. Weston’s final two runs came as result of errors on balls hit by Williams and Bandy, and singles by Griffin and Beaubouef.
