Call it shut-out Monday! Four local prep teams, consisting of two softball and two baseball squads, took to the diamond on Monday with all four games ending in a shut out, two on the winning side and two falling in defeat.
Quitman 11 Minden 0 (Softball): The Lady Wolverines made it four for four in games won by blanking Class 4A Minden, coached by former Weston High School star, Shelby Leach. Continuing the Lady Wolverines tradition of developing young talent into immediate stars, freshman Brenna Lamkin, exhibited her superb talent by firing a five hit shut out for her first career victory and going 2/3 at the plate that included an RBI triple. Quitman jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on the strength of singles by Kinsley Ponder, Maggie Guyotte, Cali Deal and Zoee Williams and nifty base running by Braelyn Boone and Anna Leach. The Lady Wolverines added another run in the third when Hallie Kate Pullig singled and scored on a double to left field by Leach. The game got out of hand the very next inning when after two outs, Quitman scored four more runs. Guyotte got the inning started with a walk, followed by a Deal double. Pullig then reached on an error and both Leach and Karley Huckaby singled to up the Quitman lead to 9-0. The final two runs were scored by Briley Bowers and Lamkin who opened the frame with a single and triple leading to Ponder hitting a sacrifice fly to up the lead to the final margin.
