The mindset of first year Quitman High School baseball coach, Chris Womack, is that to be the best you have to play the best. Evidence of the point is early season contests against a the top ranked teams in Division IV among “select” schools and in Class B along with six games against opponents from Division I – III, all who have winning records.
Fast forward to the games of Monday and Tuesday, where the Wolverines faced their strongest tests to date, contests against the third ranked teams in Division I and Division II in Benton and North DeSoto.
“We knew the challenge would be a tough one but I believe that playing against really good teams that is how you get better,” said Womack. “Sure you always want to win, but more importantly at this point in the season, our guys need the experience of going up against really good opponents.”
North DeSoto 16 Quitman 0 (Monday) – Remi Mason, one of the top collegiate prospects in northwest Louisiana, proved his worth to lead North DeSoto to the three inning “mercy rule” victory. Mason allowed only one hit, a double to Hudson Pullig, while smashing two home runs and accounting for 4 RBI to lead the Griffiins.
Benton 17 Quitman 0 (Tuesday) The Wolverines got one more hit than in the game before as north Louisiana’s premier Division I team improved to 16-1 on the year with the three inning victory. Once again, it was Hudson Pullig who managed the only hits for the Wolverines, rapping singles in the first and third innings.
