‘Open big for Momma!’
I approached the mouth of my child with a tiny spoon of baby food. The process was methodically repeated at each meal time. Hopefully, they were hungry and liked the food and were cooperative. When offered food, they opened wide; ate and swallowed. Then, we repeated the process until they were full and the rest of the baby foods were all gone.
At times, I gave up in frustration when they turned their head away or spit out the offered food. Our daughter, the oldest child didn’t like baby food; in contrast, our son had a hearty appetite and could hardly wait for me to spoon feed him. We expect to spoon feed babies; reborn, new Christians need regular feedings of God’s word.
Mature Christians frequently have a calling to spoon feed the new believers. As the Christ followers begin to grow, they desire the solid food of the word more and more. Soon, they are feeding themselves. Something is seriously wrong when a believer settles for baby’s milk and spoon feedings.
“Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food. Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil (Hebrews 5:12-14 HCSB).”
