All over the world, the date of April 20th is being celebrated as Easter Sunday. In the Christian calendar, Easter follows Lent, the period of 40 days (not counting Sundays) before Easter, which traditionally is observed by acts of penance and fasting. Easter is immediately preceded by Holy Week, which includes Maundy Thursday, the commemoration of Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples; Good Friday, the day of his Crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, the transition between Crucifixion and Resurrection.

All Christian traditions have their own special liturgical emphases for Easter. The Easter sunrise service, for example, is a distinctive Protestant observance in North America. The practice may derive from the Gospel narrative of Jesus’ Resurrection, which states that Mary Magdalene went to the tomb “while it was still dark” (John 20:1) or as dawn was breaking (Matthew 28:1 and Luke 24:1). It is a service of jubilation that takes place as the sun rises to dispel the darkness.

Easter Customs!

Easter Sunday, the principal festival of the Christian church, which celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion. The earliest recorded observance of an Easter celebration comes from the 2nd century, though the commemoration of Jesus’ Resurrection probably occurred earlier.

Fixing the date on which the Resurrection of Jesus was to be observed and celebrated triggered a major controversy in early Christianity in which an Eastern and a Western position can be distinguished. The dispute, known as the Paschal controversies, was not definitively resolved until the 8th century. In Asia Minor, Christians observed the day of the Crucifixion on the same day that Jews celebrated the Passover offering—that is, on the 14th day of the first full moon of spring, 14 Nisan (see Jewish calendar). The Resurrection, then, was observed two days later, on 16 Nisan, regardless of the day of the week. In the West the Resurrection of Jesus was celebrated on the first day of the week, Sunday, when Jesus had risen from the dead. Consequently, Easter was always celebrated on the first Sunday after the 14th day of the month of Nisan. Increasingly, the churches opted for the Sunday celebration, and the Quartodecimans (“14th day” proponents) remained a minority. The Council of Nicaea in 325 decreed that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox (March 21). Easter, therefore, can fall on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

Eastern Orthodox churches use a slightly different calculation based on the Julian rather than the Gregorian calendar (which is 13 days ahead of the former), with the result that the Orthodox Easter celebration usually occurs later than that celebrated by Protestants and Roman Catholics. Moreover, the Orthodox tradition prohibits Easter from being celebrated before or at the same time as Passover.

In the 20th century several attempts were made to arrive at a fixed date for Easter, with the Sunday following the second Saturday in April specifically proposed. While this proposal and others had many supporters, none came to fruition. Renewed interest in a fixed date arose in the early 21st century, resulting from discussions involving the leaders of Eastern Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, Coptic, Anglican, and Roman Catholic churches, but formal agreement on such a date remained elusive.

The use of painted and decorated Easter eggs was first recorded in the 13th century. The church prohibited the eating of eggs during Holy Week, but chickens continued to lay eggs during that week, and the notion of specially identifying those as “Holy Week” eggs brought about their decoration. The egg itself became a symbol of the Resurrection. Just as Jesus rose from the tomb, the egg symbolizes new life emerging from the eggshell. In the Orthodox tradition eggs are painted red to symbolize the blood Jesus shed on the cross.

The custom of associating a rabbit or bunny with Easter arose in Protestant areas in Europe in the 17th century but did not become common until the 19th century. The Easter rabbit, or Easter bunny, is said to lay Easter eggs as well as decorate and hide them. In the United States the Easter bunny also leaves children baskets with toys and candies on Easter morning, a tradition enjoyed by non-religious families and Christians alike. The practice has been seen as a manifestation of the Protestant rejection of Catholic Easter customs. In some European countries, however, other animals—in Switzerland the cuckoo, in Westphalia the fox—brought the Easter eggs.

Easter egg hunts are popular among children in the United States. Modern egg hunts often involve real and plastic eggs, the latter being filled with candies or small toys. Sometimes one or more “prize eggs” are hidden, which earn a treat-filled basket or other prize for the finder. First lady Lucy Hayes, the wife of Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes, is often credited with sponsoring the first annual Easter egg roll (an event where children and their parents were invited to roll their eggs on the Monday following Easter) on the White House lawn, in 1878. That year the event was moved to the White House from the grounds of the U.S. Capitol Building, where large numbers of children had gathered beginning in the early 1870s to roll their eggs and play on Easter Monday. Members of Congress were dismayed by the large crowds on Capitol Hill and feared that the foot traffic was damaging the grounds. By 1876, Congress and President Ulysses S. Grant passed a law that forbade the practice of egg rolling on Capitol Hill.

The local LHSAA high schools in Jackson Parish, completed their “regular season” track and field schedule this past Thursday and now turn their attention to the “second season” that features district, regional and state championship meets. 

Jonesboro-Hodge will travel to Sibley, LA on Wednesday, April 23rd to take part in the District 1-1A meet that will be held at Lakeside High School. Quitman and Weston High Schools will also be on the road as both travel to Castor, LA to take part in the District 1B meet on the campus of Castor High School. Field competition is slated to begin at 3:00 pm, with the track portion following at both meets. 

All three local schools were in action at the Weston Invitational last Thursday, with the Quitman girls outpointing JHHS for top team honors and Weston finishing in 8th place. In boys competition, the Wolverines, JHHS, and Weston finished in second, fourth, and eighth place, respectively, behind meet winner Castor. 

Locals won gold medals in an astounding 20 events with Ciara Gray of Jonesboro-Hodge leading the way with four first place finishes followed by Christian McGuire of JHHS and Megan Kelley from Quitman winning two events each.

Since it’s inception nearly two years ago, the Jackson Parish Unity Team (JPUT), a coalition of local pastors, government and business leaders, has stepped forward to host many community gatherings in the name of uniting the residents of Jackson Parish together in the effort to stop senseless violence. 

On April 26th, JPUT will present their largest endeavor yet with the inaugural Jonesboro Jumpshot Jam, which will be a one-day tournament for boys aged 12-18 that will be played at the Full Gospel Temple Gymnasium, located at 773 Walker Road in Jonesboro.

The honorees for the “Student / Athlete of the Week” Award for the week of April 13-19 have been selected. The award, which is sponsored by the Jackson Parish Hospital, recognizes an outstanding student/athlete chosen from Jonesboro-Hodge, Quitman, and Weston High Schools who are chosen by select members of the faculty and staff of each institution. 

The selectees are chosen for best exemplifying what it means to be a true student-athlete through academic achievement and athletic accomplishment. Each recipient is recognized by the Jackson Parish Hospital through social media and receives a special commemorative shirt.

Can a pair of first’s also be a last? The answer is yes, when in reference to Weston High School’s 16-1 loss to Lacassine in the LHSAA Class B softball playoffs on Thursday. To explain further, the first round contest was the first postseason game played on the Lady Wolves newly refurbished, on campus field which turned out to be the last game WHS will play this season.

Weston, which closes out their 2025 campaign with a 6-15 record after beginning the year by winning their first three contests in the prestigious Polar Bear Classic, earned the right to host the contest by virtue of their #15 seeding in the Class B bracket. Lacassine, seeded #19, improves to 12-6 and moves on to play #3 seed Anacoco in the regional round.

One of those days! The promotion leading up to the contest proclaimed “Today is the Day”.  It was correct but not in the way that WHS wanted as the day was the day that nothing went right for WHS right from the get-go.

Lacassine opened the game by loading the bases with one out after sandwiching a pair of singles and a walk around a strikeout. Then the Lady Wolves became their own worst enemy by committing two infield errors, allowing three unearned runs to cross the plate before getting out of the inning.

Davynee Bearden hit a one out double followed by a Molly Beaubouef single to give WHS two runners in scoring position with only one out in their half of the inning, but again things went wrong as both were stranded on base.

The bad luck continued in the second inning for the Lady Wolves as just when it looked like Weston would escape Lacassine having runners on first and third with no further damage, another costly infield error, this one coming with two outs, plated two more runs leading to three Lacassine batters getting hit by a pitch and a single that put Weston in a 7-0 hole. Eight straight Lacassine batters reaching base to open the top of the third ran the score to 13-0.

Weston got on the board in the bottom of the third when Carlynn Waters reached on an error and scored on when Rachel Bandy, who was the hard-luck loser in the circle despite not giving up an earned run, slapped a single up the middle.

Two more errors by the Lady /Wolves, their 5th and 6th of the contest, contributed to the final three runs scored against them and the contest ending after only five innings due to the “mercy rule”.

The loss, while disheartening, doesn’t put a damper the growth shown by the Lady Wolves in head coach Cecilia Chamblee’s third season at the helm. Weston’s .400 winning percentage this season was better for the third straight year and for the first time since 2014, the Lady Wolves opened the season with three straight victories. Adding to the positive reflection on the season is the promise brought forth by several budding players who made major contributions this year.

With twelve games being played on Thursday and Friday at the  Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sports Complex the 2025 JPRD spring baseball and softball leagues opened their season. A total of 417 boys and girls aged 3-13 will compete in eight age-based leagues broken down as follows:

As a continuing special addition to the 7-8, 9-10, and 11-13 girls and boys leagues, contests will be played each week against teams from Castor as well.

“Brad and Sophie are, by most standards, good people. They do things as a family, and they try to keep their kids involved in various activities. They are considering trading their SUV for a minivan, something Sophie said she would never do. They try their best to have dinner as a family when the kids’ schedules permit it, and when the family dinners happen, they always hold hands around the dinner table and say, “the blessing.”

On Facebook, a recent family photo by the flowered cross at church has more than one hundred likes and dozens of comments about their beautiful family. Brad and Sophie are in their mid-thirties and go to church once every three months, because they are so busy.

The extended family on Brad’s side has a beach house on the Gulf Coast and they try to get down there for the weekend whenever the weather is nice. It is also a real hassle to get the kids out the door on Sunday morning. (Miraculously, they can get everyone ready for school each morning, but nobody has ever brought that up.) When they are in town, they try hard to be at church because it means a lot to Papa and Nana, Sophie’s parents.

Papa is a third-generation member of the church and has taught in the same adult Sunday school classroom for thirty years. He sings in the choir every now and then but doesn’t like some of the new music they’ve been doing since the church hired the “new guy.” Papa serves on several committees in the church and never misses a Sunday.

Nana’s entire social life revolves around the church, and she is always so thrilled to see the grandkids there so she can show them off to friends. She and the other ladies teaching Sunday school tell the girls that they changed their mom’s diaper in the nursery when she was a baby.

Church is a “good thing” in this family’s life, especially for the kids, since it is a place where they learn good moral lessons. And when they finally do make it, they admittedly feel good about themselves—and it gives the kids a chance to wear their monogrammed “church clothes.” Being seen as a family that doesn’t take the kids to church would be embarrassing for Nana, and the passive-aggressive comments at family gatherings would be unbearable.

Even when they lived in a different state, Nana would ask Sophie every Monday on the phone whether she “took my grandkids to church.” It drove Sophie crazy. Now, being back in the same town, she can’t lie about their church attendance. Attending a different church than Nana and Papa’s in the same town would be worse than not attending at all.

Plus, the experience is comfortable. During the worship service, the new minister speaks for twenty minutes about loving others. Jesus is portrayed as a great example of this, since He helped the poor. The pastor doesn’t talk about sin, repentance, or the need for salvation, but the messages are inspiring.

After church, Brad, Sophie and the kids head to Nana and Papa’s for lunch, and the kids can’t wait to change into their regular clothes. Brad and Sophie have found they fight less if they occasionally give this four-hour sacrifice to Sophie’s parents, as it doesn’t seem to impact the rest of their normal day-to-day routine.”

A happy story, huh?

Mize’s New Book Breaks Down Humor Writing

Our beloved state of Louisiana is low on the list for some things, but we have one thing we can claim that no other state has: We have the only modern-day Will Rogers as senator representing Louisiana. Senator John Kennedy often appears in clips on national news channels for his comments that have the nation laughing.

Here’s an example. While appearing with a panel of Senators on a show recently, he was asked to comment on the behavior of a member of an opposing party. He kept a straight face while other members of the panel were laughing when he said, “She’s the reason they put instructions on shampoo bottles.”

Kennedy is a master of the quip and was using one of the several techniques humor writers employ to bemuse their readers.

I received a book in the mail “Funny You Asked Me That!” from my friend, humor writer Jim Mize who writes from his cabin in the mountains of South Carolina. Included in the book are several of his humor columns but what I have found intriguing is he explains techniques he uses to create the humor that caused me to laugh.

In the book’s preface, Mize writes “Within these chapters, you will find discussions of techniques, samples and opinions of humor from a student who has spent almost fifty years on the subject and is yet to graduate.”

When I was growing up, I loved to read the outdoors magazines such as Outdoor Life, Field and Stream and Sports Afield. As soon as I got my hands on a copy, I’d head to the back pages first to read the humor columns of Ed Zern and Patrick McManus. In Mize’s book, he is also a fan of these two great humor writers and has learned a lot from them, in person or by correspondence, of how they do what they do.

Another of his favorite humor writers, also mine, is the late Lewis Grizzard who wrote for an Atlanta newspaper. Here’s something Mize included in the book that Grizzard wrote. “In the south, there’s a difference between ‘Naked’ and ‘Nekkid’. Naked means you don’t have clothes on while Nekkid means you don’t have any clothes on and you’re up to something.”

Mize’s humorous writings have appeared in Gray’s Sporting Journal, Field and Stream, South Carolina Wildlife, In-Fishermen, Great Days Outdoors and several other national magazines. On a personal note, I occasionally include a bit of humor in the columns I write. If bits of humor in my columns are created by some of the techniques Mize writes about, such as misdirection, tension, timing et al, it’s strictly by accident.

This is one reason I am enjoying Mize’s book so much; it shows me when I try to write something funny, that there’s a reason a particular column might produce a chuckle or at least a smile and head nod.

Mize has produced a collection of humorous books that each hold special niches in my personal library. His first one, “The Winter of our Discontent” may be my favorite. FISHING REPORT 

CANEY LAKE –. Crappie fishing has been good in the shallows as the spawn is kicking in. Shiners and jigs are bringing some good ones in. Bass are still on the banks and responding to Yellow Magics and Sinko’s fished wacky style. Bream both chinquapins and bluegills are on the beds and hitting crickets and worms. No report on catfish. BUSSEY BRAKE – Lots of big bass are being caught around shallow brush flipping jigs and soft plastics. Crappie have slowed down a bit and some have moved from the shallows to deeper water. For latest information, contact the Honey Hole at 323-8707.
OUACHITA RIVER – High water and rising. No fishing report. For latest information, contact the Honey Hole Tackle Shop at 323-8707.
LAKE D’ARBONNE – Bass fishing has been good early mornings on topwater lures with soft plastics, jigs and chatter baits working best later in the day away from the banks. Crappie are still mostly on the banks spawning although some have begun to move out to deeper water. Jigs and shiners are taking some nice fish. Bream are bedding shallow and hitting worms and crickets and catfish are good fishing off the banks. For latest information, call Anderson Sport Center at 368-9669 or Honey Hole Tackle Shop at 323-8707.
LAKE CLAIBORNE – Crappie fishing has been good in the shallows on spawning fish with some beginning to move to deeper water. Jigs and shiners are best for crappie. Bass are mostly shallow and will hit jigs, spinners and soft plastics. Bream are on the beds and worms and crickets are working on them. No report on stripers or catfish. LAKE POVERTY POINT – Catfish and bream are biting. Crappie are fair with no report on bass. For information, contact the marina at 318/878-0101.

Excruciating Pain and Suffering

Jesus, Son of God endured excruciating pain and suffering.

James Earl Gibson
April 11, 1944 – April 17, 2025

James Earl Gibson, age 81 of Bossier City, ascended to his Heavenly home
on Thursday, April 17, 2025. He was born on Tuesday, April 11, 1944 in
Anniston, Alabama. James devoted his life to God, his Country, and every
bit of his heart to his beloved family.

He enlisted in the Army in 1962. Following his Basic Training, and Infantry
Advanced Individual Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Airborne School at
Fort Benning, Georgia. His initial assignment was to the 101st Airborne
Division where he rose in rank and responsibility from Private to Sergeant
and Squad Leader.

In 1967, Sergeant Gibson deployed for his first tour in Vietnam where
although only a sergeant, he frequently served as platoon sergeant. On 8
June 1967, his squad made heavy enemy contact. Sergeant Gibson was
able to pull the injured point man back to safety and returned to assist
another wounded soldier when he himself was severely wounded. For his
actions he was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor. Promoted while
recovering from his wounds, Staff Sergeant Gibson then served at Fort
Gordon, Georgia and Fort Polk preparing soldiers for Vietnam. Selected for
Sergeant First Class with only seven years in the Army, he returned to
Vietnam as an Advisor for the Vietnamese Army.

Upon return from Vietnam, Sergeant First Class Gibson graduated from Drill
Sergeant School becoming a Drill Instructor at Fort Polk. In 1973, having
served as the Ranger class first sergeant throughout, he graduated from
Ranger School as the Distinguished Honor Graduate.

In March of 1974, Sergeant First Class Gibson was among the first
noncommissioned officers selected for the original cadre in forming the first
ranger battalion to be activated since World War II. As a Platoon Sergeant
in the 1st Ranger Battalion, he guided his platoon in the transition from
formation to the initial combat certification. The 1 st Ranger Battalion
experience ultimately changed the way the Army trained.
Subsequently, in 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, he served as the
Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge of the division’s RECONDO School and
after promotion to Master Sergeant as Company First Sergeant in 1st
Battalion, 14th Infantry. With the Army’s renewed emphasis on enhancing
the reserve components, Master Sergeant Gibson was assigned as the
Senior Enlisted Advisor for the 143rd Battalion (Airborne) in the Texas Army
National Guard. Following the Sergeants Major Academy, he became the
First Sergeant in the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington. Upon
his promotion, Sergeant Major Gibson became the Sergeant Major of the Florida Ranger Camp. In 1982, he became the Command Sergeant Major, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry, 172d Infantry Brigade in Alaska. His final
active duty assignment was as Commandant of Alaska’s Noncommissioned
Officers Academy until his retirement from the Army in 1984 culminating
over twenty-two years of active service.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with “V” and Purple
Heart. In 1996, Command Sergeant Major Gibson was appointed to the
Governor’s Military Advisory Committee for the State of Louisiana. James
Earl “Hoot” Gibson was inducted into the US Army Ranger Hall of Fame in
2016. James served his country proudly.

James enjoyed watching football, hunting, and playing golf in his free-time.
He loved his family! His wife, his children, grandchildren, and great
grandchildren were everything to him and he loved spending his time
making memories with them and his beloved dog, Lizzy.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Mickey L. Gibson;
sons, James Boyd Gibson and Dana, Gafe J. Gibson; grandchildren, Shae
Newton and Cody, Benjamin Gibson and Emily, Conner Gibson; great
grandchildren, Kynnedy, Caroline, and Claire Newton; brothers in law,
Kenneth Wyatt and Sammy Stevenson; niece, Tracie Brown and Steven;
nephew, Keith Wyatt and Kim; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Wayland and Elizabeth
Earnestine (Harper) Gibson; sister, Gaylon (Gibson) Wyatt.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at Hodge
Baptist church from 10:00 AM until time of service. Funeral services are set
to begin at 2:00 PM with Rev. Thomas Ussery officiating. Burial will follow in
Salem Cemetery, near Eros, under the direction of Southern-Edmonds
Funeral Home.

Serving the family as pallbearers will be Donnie Arnold, Benjamin Gibson, Danny Wane Hughes, Patrick McGovern, Cody Newton, Nathan Newton, and Mike Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Burgess, Ronnie Carson, Art Cobb, Thomas Luderback, Dean Mitchell, and Jim Perkins.

The Jackson Parish Police Jury held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 15th in the Nathaniel Zeno, Jr. Meeting Room of the Jackson Parish Administrative Building, located at 160 Industrial Drive in Jonesboro.

The session that began at 5:30 pm was a short one as the agenda contained only six items to be dealt with by jurors Todd Culpepper (President), Lewis Chatham, Amy Magee, Sheketia Combs, Tarneshala “Niki” Cowans, Regina Rowe, and Keith Burris.

After the meeting was called to order and the invocation and pledge of allegiance were conducted, the JPPJ approved the minutes of the March 10 regular meeting and April 10th special meeting while also approving the payments of monthly purchase orders and all bills. 

Reports by Operations Manager Brad Roller, Road Superintendent Wayne Anderson, and Solid Waste Superintendent Robin Session were then accepted, as was the engineering report given by Paul Riley of The Riley Co. of Louisiana. In final action the JPPJ approved the sealed bid monetary amount for the property to be sold.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) released the 2025 postseason brackets in baseball on Tuesday, and not a single school from Jackson Parish will be playing in the first round. For Weston and Quitman High Schools, the news was very welcome, while at Jonesboro-Hodge, it was a punch in the gut.

By virtue of their #2 and #5 seedings in the 20-team Class B bracket, both Weston and Quitman received automatic entry into the second round, but for Jonesboro-Hodge, the first round exclusion meant the Tigers missed making the Division IV bracket entirely.

Weston, who finished the season with an official 19-10  record that didn’t include three wins over out-of-state opponents, will host the winner of #15 Avoyelles Public Charter (10-11) and #18 Converse (12-17). Weston did not play APC during the regular season, but does own an 18-4 victory over Converse in the contest that was played on February 14th. 

Quitman (14-14) will also play host to a second round game, when they will welcome long-time rival Choudrant (11-15) for a #5 – #12 matchup that will be a rematch of the 2-1 Choudrant victory that was played on March 28th.

Jonesboro-Hodge turned in one of the better seasons the Tigers have had over the past several years, finishing the year with a winning record at 11-10, which included an early season #1 ranking in Division IV. By season’s end, the Tigers were on the outside looking in at the 24-team bracket, having been designated a #25 ranking, just 0.2476 out of the final spot, which went to 3-17 East Beauregard.

The 2025 Sunshine Festival in Jonesboro is scheduled for April 19th, and the Jackson Parish Chamber of Commerce announces that if you are interested in being a vendor or providing entertainment, this is “last call”.

The honorees for the “Student / Athlete of the Week” Award for the week of April 6-12 have been selected. The award, which is sponsored by the Jackson Parish Hospital, recognizes an outstanding student/athlete chosen from Jonesboro-Hodge, Quitman, and Weston High Schools who are chosen by select members of the faculty and staff of each institution. 

The selectees are chosen for best exemplifying what it means to be a true student-athlete through academic achievement and athletic accomplishment. Each recipient is recognized by the Jackson Parish Hospital through social media and receives a special commemorative shirt.

Earning accolades this week are Bryce Zehr, who is on the Weston High School baseball team, Ric’Kiya Bryant, a member of the Jonesboro-Hodge High School girls track team and Zach Smudricks of the Quitman High School baseball team.

Milesplit LA has announced that Ciara Gray of Jonesboro-Hodge High School has been selected as the female performer of the week. The announcement came on April 14th after the final results of a poll conducted by MileSplit LA that ran from April 7th to April 13th was released. 

The sensational Lady Tiger track and field phenom was a runaway winner in the voting, garnering 51% of the total vote, far ahead of Julia Jenkins of Covington High who took home 26.71% of the ballots.

One of eight girl track stars across the state that was on the ballot, Gray made her introduction to track and field followers across the state by bringing home an incredible 4 gold medals, against large school competition from all over Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and Mississippi at the prestigious “Hoss” Garret Relays hosted by Ruston High School. What makes the performance all the more impressive is that two of the gold medals came on the track, as she won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and two more came in field events where she took first place in the long jump and triple jump. 

Gray Continues to Re-Write Jackson Parish Record Book

Not to be content with just winning races and events, Gray put a bow on the Performer of the Week Award by setting two new Jackson Parish records the following week at the Llewellyn Starks Invitational hosted by Jonesboro-Hodge High School. There, Gray ran a time of 15.11 to set a new JHHS and Jackson Parish mark in the 100 meters and also put her name at the top of both the school and parish in the triple jump by soaring to 39’3.5″ while also claiming the top spot in the LHSAA among all classifications in the event. 

Made to be broken! It took only a matter of seven days for the 100-meter hurdles record to be rewritten as this past Thursday, April 11th, Gray did it again, shaving off .03 from the mark set just the week before at the Winn Parish Relays.

Local track and field competition enthusiasts from Jonesboro-Hodge, Quitman, and Weston High School have had the chance to witness not only school record-breaking performances from athletes from all three this season but also historical parish records as well go by the wayside. 

This Thursday, it will be easy to watch all the local record breakers in action as all three area schools will be competing in the 2025 Weston Invitational that will be held at the track complex on the campus of Quitman High School. 

Medals will be given to individuals for the top three places in each event, as well as plaques for the 1st place team and runner-up in both the boys and girls divisions, determined by point totals earned by team competitors in each event. 

Field events are slated to begin at 3:30 pm. The 3200-meter run will kick off the running events at 4:00 pm with a rolling schedule of track events expected to start running around 5:00 pm or as soon as all field events are completed.

A small bleacher section is available for spectators, but it is recommended for spectators to bring folding chairs for their seating comfort that can be placed around the track. Entry fee for spectators is $7.00 per person.

Each spring, families around the world celebrate Easter in a secular way, enjoying a visit from the Easter Bunny, receiving treat-filled baskets, and hunting decorated eggs. For practicing Christians, Easter Sunday, which this year will fall on April 20th, carries a much more spiritual meaning as it represents the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Two days before is known as “Good Friday”, the holy day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. Pastor Gary Green and the congregation of Jonesboro-Hodge Methodist Church, located at 402 Cooper Avenue in Jonesboro, invite you to reflect with them on the sacrifice Jesus made of dying for our sins by joining in a special “Good Friday” service at 5:30 pm on April 18th.

PLAY BALL!

That is the cry that will be heard on the fields of the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sports Complex starting on Thursday, April 17th, when the 2025 JPRD youth baseball and softball summer leagues begin play. A total of 417 boys and girls aged 3-13 will compete in eight age-based leagues broken down as follows:

Age 3-4 League (boys and girls)
Age 5-6 League (boys and girls)
Age 7-8 Boys Baseball
Age 7-8 Girls Softball 
Age 9-10 Boys Baseball
Age 9-10 Girls Softball 
Age 11-13 Boys Baseball

The schedule that will run from April 17 – May 29 will feature age-grouped leagues 3-4 and 9-10 playing each Monday and Thursday, with the 5-6 and 7-8 year olds playing each Tuesday and Friday. The boys and girls in the 11-13 age groups will play games on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday each week. As a continuing special addition to the 7-8, 9-10, and 11-13 girls and boys leagues, contests will be played each week against teams from Castor as well.
