A dozen schools from north Louisiaian descended on the track and field complex on the campus of Quitman High School and when the dust finally settled on the girls and boys competition, it was homestanding Quitman whio was the “host with the most,” grabbing both girls and boys Class B – Region 1 team titles.
The Lady Wolverines ran away with the girls competition scoring 135 points to finish far ahead of second place Converse, who had only 73 points. Weston High came in 8th place with 46 points.
It was a much different story in the boys competition that wasn’t decided until the final event with Quitman taking a narrow 125-124 victory over fellow district 1B competitor Castor. Jackson Parish was also represented by Weston High who came in 6th place with 39 points.
It was not necessarily the number of first through third place finishes that brought the trophy home for Quitman, but the overall depth of both the girls and boys teams that saw Quitman score points in virtually every event
In girls’ competition, Megan Kelley and Kaleigh King were two-time winners, with Lily Kate Odom and Kaleigh Webb winning gold along with the girls’ 4×200 and 4×400 meter relay teams.
Gage Horton and Nathin Harvey grabbed gold in two events, with Asher Shultz and Jayden Harts also coming in first place in their respective events. The 4×200 and 4×400 meter boys relay teams also earned gold medals.
Both Quitman sqauds will now look forward to the LHSAA Class B state track meet that will be held May 8-10 at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
