He was one of the fortunate ones. No, Marvin Davis didn’t grow up with the proverbial “silver spoon” but he and his sister were rich beyond belief. Being rich has nothing to do with money but being blessed.
Growing up as the son of Jimmie Davis is certainly one of the best blessings that could be bestowed on a person. It was a truly blessing in itself just to know the man much less be his son.
For clarification purposes we are not talking about the “singing governor” who grew up on Peckerwood Hill just outside of Quitman and the man who grew to be a legend nationwide for creating the song You Are My Sunshine.
The Jimmie Davis that is being referred to is the beloved coach at Jonesboro-Hodge and Jackson Parish resident who went to be with the Lord in 2018. There are many ways to describe him. Words such as educator, comforter, leader, trustworthy, and friend are just a few. More so, he was a mentor and life tutor to countless young boys and girls, always strengthening the faith of those he came across and providing inspirational words that instilled confidence.
Marvin Davis knew even when he was a young lad that he wanted to be a coach like his father was. He saw the effect his father had through his being a tremendous inspirational and spiritual leader to young girls and boys.
In an interview back in 2022 with the Jackson Parish Journal when he was hired as boys head basketball coach at Northwood High School Marvin how instrumental his father was in him wanting to be a coach.
“He was my mentor and inspiration to get involved in coaching and working with all children regardless of their background,” Davis said.
After graduating from Quitman High School in 1996 and getting his degree from Louisiana Tech, Davis was hired as an assistant girls basketball and football coach at Lakeside High in Sibley. One year later, he became the head coach of the girls program for five years while still maintaining his position with the football team.
In 2011, he moved to Mansfield High School to become an assistant girls basketball, football, and track coach for three years before once again becoming a head coach, leading the Wolverine boys basketball program for six seasons. In 2020, he joined the Airline High School boys basketball staff before becoming the Northwood High School head boys basketball coach in 2022.
Now Davis has returned to Airline High, the largest school in Bossier City, as the head boys basketball coach, looking to bring his 25 years of experience in coaching and even more importantly, his ability to inspire young athletes to reach their potential on and off the court.
