Candlelight Vigil for Domestic Violence Victims to be held on Thursday

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to break the silence around abuse and stand in support of survivors. Domestic violence doesn’t just affect individuals—it impacts families, workplaces, churches, and entire communities.

Statistics show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men will experience severe intimate partner violence in their lifetime. In rural parishes like Jackson, survivors often face added challenges such as isolation, lack of transportation, and limited access to services. That’s why local organizations like the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team (DART) play such a vital role, offering shelter, crisis advocacy, court accompaniment, and education throughout the parish.

As part of this month’s observance, DART will host a Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday, October 9th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Jonesboro Pentecostal Church, 1011 S. Cooper Avenue in Jonesboro. The vigil will honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence, celebrate survivors, and raise awareness about the ongoing fight to end abuse.

“This month is about awareness, but even more, it’s about action,” Andrea Malone, DART advocate said. “When the community comes together—whether it’s by attending events, supporting survivors, or speaking out—we send a powerful message that domestic violence has no place here.”

Residents are encouraged to wear purple during October to show support and solidarity. By standing together, Jackson Parish can shine a light on hope, healing, and change.
