Can coming home from a destination by going the same way from the same place on back-to-back days be longer one time and shorter the other? Logistically, it isn’t possible, but emotionally, it certainly can be the case.
The girls and boys basketball teams from Quitman High School found that to be true the past two nights when they returned home from the long trip south to Fairview twice in two days.
What was the difference?
One night it was coming home after a loss. The other after a victory.
Both squads split their two games in the very competitive Fairview Tournament, loaded with some of the best small school talent in the state that resulted in the two squads ending the week with similar records, with the girls sporting a 5-2 mark and the boys checking in at 4-2 on the year.
The tourney started for the locals with the girls falling to defending Class B state champion Fairview 65-24 before coming back to beat Plainview 56-21 on Saturday. Meanwhile, the boys almost won both of their games, losing a heartbreaker to tourney host Fairview 66-64 before hammering Hathaway 81-47 the following night.
Weston Winless in Calvin
Even though the return trip home didn’t take nearly as long as their Jackson Parish Class B counterpart, the ride back from Calvin still seemed like a long one for everyone from Weston. That was because both the girls’ and boys’ teams fell tothe Winn Parish opponent. For the Lady Wolves, the 74-48 final deficit was the first loss of the season after four straight wins, while the boys fell to 2-3 on the year after losing 61-55.
