A significant partnership between a local government entity, the largest manufacturing facility in Jackson Parish, and a premier national non-profit organization has been established, reflecting a continued investment in the future of area youth and the community.
By unanimous vote of the Jonesboro Board of Aldermen, a long-term lease agreement has been entered into with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, underscoring a shared commitment to opportunity, growth, and community development. As part of this partnership, Smurfit-Westrock, represented by former Town of Jonesboro Mayor James Bradford, has agreed to invest in upgrades to the Boys & Girls Club facility, known as the Dr. C. S. McDonald Recreation Center, located at 400 Jeffress Street in Jonesboro.
Supporting this initiative is Boys and Girls Club North Louisiana Regional Director and Jonesboro-Hodge High School alum, Eldonte Osborne, whose leadership continues to expand access and impact for youth across the region.
The Town of Jonesboro would also like to extend its sincere appreciation to Rick Whiddon, Interim General Manager of the Smurfit-Westrock plant in Hodge, and the corporate leadership team at Smurfit-Westrock for their commitment and support in making this initiative possible.
“This collaboration represents a unified effort between local government, private industry, and nonprofit leadership to create a safe, modern, and resource-rich environment for our local youth. The planned improvements to the facility will enhance programming, strengthen engagement, and provide a space where young people can thrive academically, socially, and personally. This agreement stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when organizations come together with a shared vision. The Town of Jonesboro remains committed to building strong partnerships that deliver meaningful, long-term benefits for our residents. Together, Jonesboro, Smurfit-Westrock, and the Boys & Girls Club of America are laying the groundwork for a stronger, more vibrant future, one that prioritizes our youth and invests in the leaders of tomorrow.” – Jonesboro Mayor J. “Spike” Harris
