JPSD Superintendent Carter Makes Statement Regarding Closing of J-HMS

Jackson Parish School District Superintendent William Carter

Following the recent Jackson Parish School Board decision to transition our Jonesboro-Hodge Middle School 7th- and 8th-grade students to the Jonesboro-Hodge High School campus and our 6th-grade students to Jonesboro-Hodge Elementary School, I want to take a moment to speak directly to our community, families, and stakeholders.

We understand that this decision brings a range of emotions. Change—especially when it involves our schools and our children—is never easy. Many of you have deep connections to our junior high campus, and those traditions and memories matter. We respect that, and we hear you.

At the same time, this decision was made with a clear, unwavering focus: doing what is best for our students, both now and in the future.

By bringing our junior high students onto the high school campus, we are creating stronger academic alignment, expanding access to resources, and increasing opportunities for all students. One of the most impactful outcomes of this transition is the ability to fully implement and grow the STAR Academy model. This initiative is designed to provide targeted support, innovative instruction, and meaningful pathways for student success—ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

This move allows us to:

Expand academic and career opportunities for students at an earlier age

Provide greater access to high-quality instruction and specialized programs

Strengthen relationships between students, teachers, and support staff across grade levels

Utilize our resources more efficiently to better serve all students

We know that a decision like this requires trust, and we are committed to earning and maintaining that trust every step of the way. Over the coming weeks and months, we will work closely with families, staff, and community members to ensure a smooth transition. Your voice remains important, and we will continue to provide opportunities for feedback and communication.

Our schools are the heart of this community, and our shared goal is to provide every student with the strongest possible foundation for success. This decision was not about closing a chapter—it was about building a better one.

Thank you for your continued support, your honesty, and your commitment to our students.

Sincerely,
William Carter
Superintendent
