In a Parish where our youth have limited entertainment and activities beyond their video games, TV screens, and phones, there’s a new Park in the works for kids of all ages, as well as for parents and grandparents.
Tommy and Jessica Faber, of Quitman, recently purchased a piece of property at the corner of Wolverine Drive and Gunter Road in Quitman solely to build a playground for the children. Along with the playground, there will be space for Vendors who wish to sell a wide variety of products to the public. This property and the plans in place are being funded by the Fabers to give back to the community and provide a safe place for the youth of Jackson Parish to enjoy the outdoors.
Mr. Faber stated, “There have been a few residents and area businesses that have asked if they could donate a park bench or a basketball goal.”
Though he and his wife are not expecting donations, anyone who would like to donate items for the park or cash to help purchase them will be appreciated, and all donors will be recognized with plaques posted next to the items they have either donated or helped acquire.
The current plan is to have Vendors on the second Saturday of each month. Vendors with farm and produce items, arts and crafts, homemade goods, boutique and handmade items, food vendors, as well as local small businesses of all kinds are welcome with NO Vendor fee.
However, all vendors must obtain an occupational license from the Village of Quitman. If you are selling food that doesn’t fall under farm products or anything that doesn’t fall under “cottage food law”, you will need to show proof of a Louisiana Health Department permit to operate.
At this time, there are swings and a Tetherball court in place, but there are more swings being put together to be placed in the park, as well as a double-sided “Climbing Wall” with rock grips on one side and ropes on the opposite side. Plans are in place to build a Pickle Ball court and a Basketball court.
If you have ideas for more things you would like to see in the Quitman Park, the Fabers welcome comments and messages on the Quitman Food Park Facebook page.
