Just a few years ago, the Town of Jonesboro was in near financial ruin and subject to strict requirements to make corrections and improvements imposed by the Auditors of the state of Louisiana. Now, the rural community in north Louisiana is celebrating newfound financial independence.

Thanks to major infrastructure improvements, especially in the way Water and Sewage billing is handled and the Town of Jonesboro Public Works Department creating its own sanitation division that allows the town to no longer have to contract with an outside agency, the town has reversed a $500,000.00 debt obligation, which included the retirement of a nearly $300,000.00 debt to Entergy Corp, and is now showing a positive financial footing.

“While this administration did not create this obligation, it was our responsibility to resolve it,” said Jonesboro Mayor James “Spike” Harris. “Our increased water and sewer revenues contributed greatly to our ability to reach a zero balance with Entergy, which removes a significant burden from the Town’s budget and allows us to move forward with greater financial clarity and stability.”

“Jonesboro had turned a financial corner,” continued Harris, who credited the Town of Jonesboro staff, and especially the Town Clerk and Deputy Clerk, for their efforts in helping make this incredible recovery. “Through responsible financial management, discipline, and a commitment to doing things the right way, we have strengthened our financial position and created greater opportunities to invest in our streets, water and sewer systems, infrastructure, and future growth. The recovery phase helped establish the foundation. Now, it’s time to BUILD. We’ve made tremendous progress, but there is much more work ahead.”
