Cheniere Lake drawdown to begin following LDWF recommendation

Cheniere Lake is heavily infested with Giant Salvinia

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury (OPPJ) announces that a drawdown of Cheniere Lake, a favorite fishing spot for many Jackson Parish residents, will begin soon, following a recommendation from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF).

As part of a comprehensive strategy to control the giant salvinia, which has infested the lake, making boat travel almost impossible, and to protect Cheniere Lake’s ecosystem, fishery, recreational opportunities, and long-term health, the temporary drawdown is just one part of LDWF’s integrated management plan. Also expected are targeted herbicide applications, biological control using salvinia weevils, strategic containment measures, and continued monitoring. Together, these efforts are intended to slow the spread of giant salvinia
