Local schools Quitman and Weston traveled to West Monroe this past Thursday and Friday for the Claiborne Christian School Junior High basketball tournament. The locals won four of the six games scheduled, with the Quitman boys winning twice, the Weston girls running their unbeaten streak this season to 13 straight with a victory in their only game of the tourney, QJH girls winning one and losing one to give them a 5-7 record, and the WJH boys dropping both games they played to fall to 3-10 overall.
Thursday Games
Quitman 19 Simsboro 18 (girls): Lily Tolar made only two points, but they were huge, as the last-minute basket after she came into the contest for the first time lifted the Lady Wolverines to a thrilling victory after falling behind 10-0 to start the game. Early on, it was all Simsboro who turned a 10-2 first-quarter lead into a 14-5 advantage at the half. The second half was a different story. Elliot Savage, who led Quitman in scoring with 13, scored 7 straight points for QJH to narrow the deficit to 16-12, setting up the furious 4th-quarter rally that was fueled by 4 points from Jaicee Hall.
Quitman 50 Simsboro 34 (boys): Aiden Reed and Jaxen Culpepper both reached “double digits” in scoring with 18 and 10 points each to lead the high-scoring attack. Luke Davie scored 6, Jase Reed finished with 4, Bentley Ponder had 3, and both Sheppard Norred and Khyree Boston tallied two points apiece. Kutter Blalock added a free throw to round out the scoring for the Wolverines
Friday Games
Weston 31 FCCS 2 (girls): The Lady Wolves tied a national record that can never be broken by holding Family Community Christian School scoreless for the first three quarters in yet another dominating effort. Kate Keiffer and Saniyah Salsberry led in scoring with 14 and 8 points each, while Ryleigh Puffer finished with four and Bailey McCurday tallied three. Brooklyn Keiffer and Shelby Johns chipped in with a basket apiece as well.
Claiborne Christian 22 Weston 18 (boys): The Wolves took a 10-4 halftime lead, but the tourney host won the second half by an 18-8 margin. Hank Snuggs led WJH in scoring with 6 points, followed by Ashton Paggett and Kaine Stassen scoring 4 points each. Eli Jones chipped in with a basket.
Quitman 35, Weston 4 (boys): It was all Quitman in the all-Jackson Parish matchup as the Wolverines took a 15-2 first-quarter lead that grew to 24-4 at the half. QJH had a balanced scoring attack, with 9 players making points, led by Aiden Reed’s 7 points and 6 from Luke Davis. Four players scored four points (Jamikal Hall, Khyree Boston, Bentley Ponder, Jase Reed), and the trio of Kutter Blalock, Sheppard Norred, and Asher Norred added a basket each. Hank Snuggs and Kaine Stassen scored two points each for Weston.
Upcoming Schedule:
Weston will host Saline for a girls and boys game as well as a girls “B” game on Tuesday, September 15th, and then host the Weston Tourney on the 17th and 18th. Quitman will travel to Doyline on Monday, September 14th, before taking part in the Weston Tourney.
