Two Injured, Four Arrested in Leon Drive Shooting in Jonesboro

Overhead view of Leon Drive shooting location in Jonesboro

(Statement from Chief Israel Smith Regarding Leon Drive Shooting)

The Jonesboro Police Department is actively investigating a shooting that occurred on August 2, 2026, at approximately 8:20 p.m. in the 300 block of Leon Drive. As a result of this incident, two individuals sustained injuries and four individuals have been taken into custody.

This remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation. To protect the integrity of the case and ensure a successful prosecution, only limited information will be released at this time. Additional details will be provided as they become appropriate for public release.

I want the citizens of Jonesboro to know that this incident had the potential to end in a much greater tragedy. Reckless acts of violence place innocent lives at risk, including our children, families, and neighbors. This type of behavior has no place in our community.

I also want to speak directly to our community. Public safety is a shared responsibility. If you know of individuals carrying illegal firearms, making violent threats, planning retaliatory acts, or engaging in criminal activity that could seriously injure or kill someone, I urge you to report it before another family is forced to suffer the consequences.

The old mentality of “no snitching” has no place when innocent lives are on the line. Remaining silent while knowing someone intends to commit violence does not protect the community it endangers it. Looking out for one another means speaking up when you have information that could prevent a tragedy.

Let me be perfectly clear: the Jonesboro Police Department will use every lawful resource available to identify, arrest, and hold accountable those who choose to bring violence into our community. We will continue working closely with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

I ask everyone to remain patient as detectives continue their work and to keep the victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Angie Robinson Qualifies for Jackson Parish School Board, District 7

Angie Robinson qualified on Wednesday for Jackson Parish School Board, District 7.

Angie has been married to her husband, Jerry Wayne Robinson, Jr., for over thirty-nine years. Together, they have a daughter who is a graduate of Jackson Parish Public Schools.

Angie is committed to serving her community in a variety of ways. She has spent her career working in business, managing budgets and handling HR management functions such as payroll, workers’ compensation, health insurance, and insurance liability claims. For over 15 years, she has worked for a government entity, where she has gained crucial knowledge of the laws governing Louisiana public boards and other government entities.

Angie is committed to listening to the concerns of District 7 voters and always leading with honesty. Her top priorities are:

Smart Use of the Budget – Prioritize classrooms, teachers, and students: Our budget should work for education and should maximize our investments in those educating our students first.

Total Transparency and Parents’ Rights First in Everything – You deserve to know, to be heard, and to be a part of the conversation, because educating your children is why the school board exists.

Safe Schools – Safety doesn’t stop at physical safety. Every student and employee should be able to work and learn in an environment that promotes strong mental health and wellness programs, too.

Academic Excellence – Focus on reading, math, STEM, and future readiness. Our students today are the ones who will be working in our communities tomorrow. We must continually review school programming and workforce demands to ensure our students are ready for college or the workforce after graduation. Partnering with local industries to support workforce needs helps prepare our students for graduation and ensures we can retain them in our parish long after graduation.

Glynn Harris Outdoors and Fishing Report

What Happens When a Lake Turns Over

In last weeks column, we talked about that “sweet spot” on our lakes, the thermocline. To refresh, the thermocline separates the warmer oxygen-rich layer of water separated from colder oxygen-deleted water below the thermocline.

There is another feature on lakes in later summer that upsets the balance of the water above the thermocline and that below this line. It’s called “stratification” or as we know it best, when a lake turns over.

I had to do some research to find out just what this phenomenon is, how it works, when it happens and the effect on the lake and its fishery.

As autumn air temperatures decrease, the surface water of the lake begins to cool, causing the density of the water to increase. This denser, cooled water starts to sink, displacing the slightly warmer, less dense water below. This continuous sinking and displacement gradually deepens the thermocline, pushing it deeper and weakening the stratification barrier.

As the surface water warms, it begins to sink until the entire water column reaches a uniform temperature. Wind and currents work together to mix the lake completely.

When it mixes completely, the oxygen-rich surface layer is rapidly moved down, replenishing the oxygen supply for deep water organisms. Simultaneously, the nutrient rich water that had accumulated at the bottom is brought to the surface. This bottom water typically contains high concentrations of nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which are released from the sediments in low-oxygen conditions.

This sudden upwelling of nutrients to the sunlit surface layer can fuel rapid growth of plankton and algae.
How can the average observer note that the water has turned over? There will be a noticeable change in water color and odor; you can actually smell an unpleasant odor from all the stinky stuff that had been on the bottom layer such as the release of dissolved gases like hydrogen sulfide and methane that is now on the surface. You’ll also notice more algae blooms.

Surface water takes on a turbid appearance, not clear or transparent because of the stirred-up sediment and mud creating a temporary unpleasant odor.

Anglers often stay off the lake when a turnover occurs because of the stinky off-colored water. The fish may not be in the same areas they were before this happens because water temperatures and oxygen won’t be confined to the top layer now that the oxygen depleted lower area had mixed with the top. They could be anywhere, shallow to deep when this occurs. This makes fish concentrations harder to predict and can be a problem as you have to search harder to find fish which are more likely to be scattered rather than being concentrated together in one particular spot.

We are reminded that a lake is not simply a single body of water. It is a living, layered system always changing with the seasons.

I find this most interesting when we realize that our favorite lake has a mind of its on and can do some interesting things, especially when it turns over.

“Lake Claiborne is a lake that features a “turn over” each year.” Glynn Harris photo

Ponderings…..

There are few places in life where a person feels quite as vulnerable as the dental chair. Reclined, mouth open, bib clipped on like a toddler at mealtimes, we are reminded—sometimes painfully—that even the strongest among us can be brought to our knees by a stubborn molar. Recently, during a stretch of extensive dental work (the kind they do before you get dentures), I found myself reflecting on forgiveness, sin, and the curious ways God uses everyday experiences to get our attention.

There I was, gripping the armrests “with my teeth clenched,” even though the dentist had politely asked me not to clench anything. As drills whirred and suction tubes slurped, I realized how much of life feels like this: uncomfortable, exposed, and out of our control. Sin works the same way. It sneaks up on us, decays what we thought was solid, and before long we’re dealing with something far more extensive than we ever expected.

The hygienist cheerfully said, “We’re just going to get down to the root of the problem.” I almost laughed. Isn’t that exactly what God does with us? Grace doesn’t just polish the surface; it goes deep, right to the root. It addresses the infection, the hidden places, the things we’d rather keep tucked away. And like dental work, grace can feel intrusive before it feels healing.

As the dentist worked, I thought about how often we “bite off more than we can chew,” how frequently we “grit our teeth” through situations we caused ourselves, and how easy it is to “sink our teeth” into resentment. Sin has a way of leaving us spiritually toothless—unable to chew on the Word, unable to speak truth without wincing, unable to smile without feeling the ache of what’s broken.

But here’s the good news: God is the Master Dentist of the soul. He doesn’t shame us for the decay; He simply says, “Open wide.” And when we do, He gets to work—cleaning, restoring, reshaping. Forgiveness is His anesthetic: it numbs the sting of guilt and gives us courage to face the deeper work. Grace is His reconstruction: building us back up where life has worn us down. And mercy? Mercy is the gentle rinse that washes away what we cannot remove ourselves.

When the appointment finally ended, the dentist said, “You’re going to feel better once the healing kicks in.” I knew he meant my mouth, but I heard something more. Forgiveness doesn’t just fix what’s broken; it frees us to heal. It lets us smile again—really smile, not the tight-lipped kind we give when we’re still hurting.

So if life has left you feeling like you’re in the dental chair—exposed, anxious, and aware of your own decay—take heart. God’s grace is already at work. And when He’s finished, you’ll walk out renewed, restored, and ready to sink your teeth into joy again.

Back to School Safety! Be Alert and Help Louisiana Children Arrive Safely

Louisiana children start returning to school this week, and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission reminds drivers to follow the laws concerning school zones and school buses.

Also, remember that some students walk or ride bicycles to school. So, be on the lookout for smaller pedestrians roaming the neighborhood during morning and afternoon commutes.

Generally, school zones are active about one hour before and after the school day begins and ends, usually from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on school days. Obey the speed limit in active school zones.

Police officers can pull you over for using a hand-held cell phone in a school zone. The fine is $250 dollars. If a crash occurs, a first-offense fine can be as much as $500.

LHSC Executive Director Lisa Freeman said drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists and other road users should be prepared to stop for school buses making stops on highways and in neighborhoods. Passing a stopped school bus that has its stop arm and lights activated is punishable by a fine of up to $500 and six months in prison.

“Children who are getting off the school bus are not thinking about oncoming traffic,” LHSC Executive Director Lisa Freeman said. “As drivers, we have to be cautious around school buses in the mornings and afternoons.”

According to a 2026 survey conducted by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, 39 million passing violations occurred last school year.

All traffic moving in the same direction of a school bus must stop when the bus’s lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended. For traffic moving in the opposite direction of the bus:

On a two-lane road, a three-lane road with a center turning lane, or a four-lane road with no physical median, all vehicles in both directions must stop.
On a divided highway with a grass median or other physical barrier, vehicles moving in the same direction as the bus must stop; oncoming traffic should proceed with caution.
On a highway with a center turning lane with two travel lanes on each side, vehicles moving in the same direction as the bus must stop; oncoming traffic should proceed with caution.

Lastly, be extra-cautious when backing up in areas near schools. Remember that, especially for larger vehicles, a child may be virtually invisible when walking behind them.

“One thing we all want is for our children to have a safe school year,” Freeman said. “We can do our part by paying attention to school buses and school zones, watching for children in neighborhoods, and ignoring the cell phone until the driving is done.”
