If you ever played basketball then you have acted out this scenario n your backyard. There is one second left and the score is tied. You have to make the free throw to win. You step to the line….take a deep breath…take aim…the shot goes up and……..
Brayden Smith of Quitman Junior High found himself in that exact situation this past Tuesday evening. Only this time it wasn’t make believe or in his backyard. On no! This time it was for real and at the court of the Wolverines strongest opponent they have played this year, where it was so loud you couldn’t hear yourself think.
To set the stage, Quitman and Summerfield were tied at 36-36 when Smith drove to the basket and was fouled. The clock read 0.5 seconds left. All that was needed was for one of the two free throws awarded to go in and the game would be over. Nothing to it, right? Anyone who has been there knows different.
With the large crowd that was there to witness the battle between two of north Louisiana’s better junior high squads screaming, hollering at the top of their lungs and stomping on the stands at the top of their lungs, Smith stepped to the line. The first shot bounced harmlessly away. Now the pressure was really on. Undaunted, Smith took the ball once again and just like he had practiced in his backyard when no one was looking, took a deep breath, took aim, let fly and SWISH! Nothing but net! GAME OVER! GAME OVER! QUITMAN WINS!

Smith wasn’t the only hero on the night for the Wolverines, who with the exciting win, remained perfect on the year at 7-0. Just a few seconds before Abel Leach had made not one but two pressure packed free throws to allow Quitman to tie the game. Smith led the Wolverines with 16 points followed by Leach who made all six of his points in the final quarter that helped rally Quitman from a 28-23 deficit after three quarters of play. Taden Thomas, Kace West and Landon Boston added four each in the contest and Brayden Martin chipped in with a first quarter basket.click here to view

Quitman girls fall in overtime
Summerfield made only one of six free throws attempted in the overtime period but that was all it took as it ended up being the only point scored by either team in the extra period. The loss saddled the Lady Wolverines with their first loss of the year after opening the season with seven straight wins. Quitman had valiantly fought back from a 6-2 first quarter deficit by scoring 9 points in the fourth period behind five of Emma Walker’s seven points in the game and four points from Anna Leach, who led the team with ten. Taylor Borland scored two and Maggie Guyotte one to round out the Quitman scoring.
