Quitman Jr. High boys and girls saddle Weston with first September loss


In local junior high action the contest between the Quitman and Weston boys was a battle of unbeatens. Well sort of…. Actually Quitman did enter the Jackson Parish rivalry sporting a smooth 8-0 record while Weston had not lost in the month of September. That is until Tuesday night when the Junior Wolves remained perfect on the year by besting the home standing Wolves 31-17. The Quitman girls also stopped the Lady Wolves string of three straight victories by also scoring 31 in the contest and allowing only seven.

Quitman 31 Weston 17: In boys action Kase West scored the only two baskets in the first quarter for either team that was the catalyst of a 13 point second quarter outburst as visiting Quitman took a commanding 17-4 halftime lead.. Brayden Martin, who finished with six and Braden Smith led the charge with four points each in the quarter followed by a trey from Jaden Thomas (5 points) and a basket by Abel Leach (4 points). Quitman upped the lead to 25-6 after three when Braden Smith added four more to give him a team-leading eight points and both Leach and Maddox Duck (4 points) scored a basket. The Wolves rallied in the final quarter to almost double their production over the first three frames led by Cole Otwell who scored all five of his team leading points. Six others got two points apiece for Weston.

Quitman 31 Weston 7: There were several similarities in the boys game and the girls. Quitman didn’t allow a first quarter point in either and both the boys and girls teams scored 31 as the Lady Wolverines gave the Lady Wolves their first loss in September by winning their 8th in 9 tries. Anna Leach, Maggie Guyotte and Emma Walker got the Quitman girls off to a 7-0 first quarter advantage. Carly Griffin and Livi Otwell scored five points between them in in the second to bring Weston to within 13-5 at the half but with only a basket by JaKayla Fourd the rest of the way Quitman waltzed to the easy victory. Leach, who finished with a game high 16 added 7 in the third to help stretch the lead to a commanding 24-7 advantage. Three points by Kinsley Ponder and two each by Hallie Kate Pullig, Kynliegh Walker adn Briley Jones rounded out the scoring.
