Atkins leads state in tackles, Wins second straight “Defensive Player of the Week” award

Accolades from all over the state continue to pour in for JHHS linebacker, Xavier Atkins – and they should! After his incredible performance against Class 3A North Webster this past Friday night the sensational sophomore is now leading all classifications of LHSAA football playing schools in total tackles, individual stops, tackles per game and sacks. 

As result Atkins has been named the “Defensive Player of the Week” by LA Sportsline for the second straight week and also voted as turning in the best defensive performance for week 5 of the LHSAA schedule by GeauxPreps.com.

Atkins recording 19 tackles last week, that includes 17 solo stops, three sacks and five tackles for a loss, Atkins is leading the entire state, according to MaxPreps.com with 75 tackles, 64 solo stops and an incredible 18.8 tackles per game average. He is also tied for the state lead in sacks with six and second in tackles for a loss with eleven. 

He is not only tops in the state in each of the categories he leads by a wide margin despite playing in only four games compared to the five most LHSAA schools have played to date. See below for Atkin’s state leading stats compared to the next best in each category.
