By bringing back a “blast from the past” the Weston High School softball team hopes the present and future has brighter days ahead. They won’t have to wait much longer to see what the fortunes of the 2022 season will bring as the Lady Wolves open their season with a scrimmage scheduled for 5:00pm this Monday at West Ouachita High School.
Bringing WHS out of the dugout for the first time as a head coach will be former star Cecilia Akin, who is eager to get the season started and have the chance to lead her team to the same or even better success she and the team enjoyed.
As a player Akin was named Class B All State first team in both her junior (2015) and senior (2016) seasons at WHS where she pitched the Lady Wolves to consecutive district titles. Over the two-year period she compiled a 36-15 overall record that included a sparkling 14-1 record in district play and a combined 13 shutouts. After graduation Akin took her talents to Hinds Community College in Mississippi where she was a starting pitcher for two years and earned NJCAA All State honors her sophomore year.
“I want our girls to be able to experience the success and joys of winning,” said Akin. “They have great potential to do so and I am excited to see what we can achieve as a team. “
Akin inherits a team that lost their top pitcher but returns a deep roster of girls who have lots of game experience. Another positive is the momentum the team ended the year with. The very young Weston squad got off to a horrible start to the 2021 season by losing their first 6 games and winning only 3 of their first 17 contests. As they gained more experience, they also began to become more potent at the plate leading to more confidence. As result, the Lady Wolves won five of their last nine before falling to Pitkin in the Class B playoffs bringing optimism for the 2022 season.
They won’t have to wait much longer to see what the fortunes of the new year will bring as the Lady Wolves open their season with a scrimmage scheduled for 5:00pm this Monday at West Ouachita High School. After that though it will be almost another month before the regular season starts on March 4-5 at the Choudrant Tournament.
It is an ambitious slate that Akin has compiled with over half of their opponents hailing from higher classifications, including 5A schools Captain Shreve and Byrd of Shreveport. Also scheduled are games with Class 3A Union and Class 2A opponents D’Arbonne Woods, Delhi Charter and Lakeside.
