The annual Llewellyn Starks Invitational will be held at Jonesboro-Hodge High School this Friday, March 8th. Field events will begin at 3:15 and running after the field events are completed.
Competing along with host Jonesboro-Hodge in the meet are boys and girls teams from Calvary Baptist, Grant High, Holy Savior Menard, Lakeview, Natchitoches-Central, Red River, Winnfield and Woodlawn-Shreveport.
The meet is named after the most heralded boys track athlete in Jonesboro-Hodge High School history. Starks, affectionately known locally as “LeLe” won a state championship in the long jump at JHHS in 1985 before winning the long jump in the NCAA’s while representing Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1990.
As a professional, Starks was a bronze medalist at the US National Championships in 1989 and 1990 as well as a silver medalist at the Pan American Games in 1991. A “shoo-in” to make the 1992 US Olympic team, his blossoming career came to an abrupt end when he suffered a horrific, compound fracture to his right leg during a jump at the 1992 New York Games.
Quitman, Weston to compete in Simsboro Relays
Quitman and Weston High will also compete in a meet on Friday, sending both boys and girls teams to the Simsboro Tiger Relays. Additional teams expected to compete will be Cedar Creek, Choudrant, Converse, Doyline, Ruston, West Ouachita and host Simsboro.
