The three games played by the Jackson Parish 10U All Stars at the Little League State Softball Tournament played in Broussard this past weekend covered the whole gamut of possible outcomes. There was the loss to Lake Charles where JP10U couldn’t get a hit or score. Then there was the “mercy rule” win where the locals plated 15 runs and didn’t allow Avoyelles a hit. Then came the thrilling 3-2 affair that saw the locals battle Vidalia for seven innings before bowing out.
The hard fought, nail biter continued the exhibition of superb pitching that dominated play in the first three games. It was one of those games that it was a shame either pitcher had to lose, which was Rachel Bandy who once again pitched a good game allowing only two hits and striking out 11. Bandy’s stat line for the tourney was outstanding as she struck out 34 batters and allowed only four hits in 15 inning. The six earned runs that was charged to her gave her a 2.80 ERA.
Unfortunatley in two of the three games the opposing pitcher had an even better day. This includes the Sunday affair against Vidalia where two pitchers combined to strike out 19 and not allow JP10U to get a hit for the second time in the tourney. Jackson Parish did manage to coax four walks, have three get hit by pitches and have two reach on errors leading to two runs in the second inning that put JP10U ahead until the fourth inning when Vidalia tied it up at two before scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Scoring for Jackson Parish was Kynleigh Leach and Ella Simonelli after both had walked. Bandy got the only RBI when she got plunked, one of the two times she “took one for the team.” Ava Canerday ajnd Charleigh Newton also drew walks and Teegan Hall reached base after also getting hit by a pitch. Bella Blewer, Canerday and Simonelli also stole a base in the contest.
